I was thinking if you were born blind, how would you understand colors? I mean you can't see them so wtf.

If you're totally bling I guess that you wouldn't. But a lot of legally blind people can see light/dark and the general color of a very large object.

The Lounge is getting too philosophical. First the cloning, now epistemological loneliness.

Why would you need to understand colors if you can't see anything?

There's a guy who was born with no eyes who can draw in perspective. Discovery had him in that "super-humans special" thingie.
Colour? No, unless they have like synesthesia and can taste colours or something random.

I've heard the phrase "It's like trying to teach blue to a blind man" to explain something that's impossible.
My cousin is really badly color blind. We were at a Dodger game one time and for some reason I asked him "So if you're color blind, what does the baseball field look like?" He said the grass and the dirt for the infield appeared to be the same color. The different textures from the grass to the dirt, the height of the grass is what gives away the switch from infield to outfield. That just blew my mind away having always been able to see color.

I did some volunteer work at CNIB. Most legally blind folk can see light and dark and some of them can see colours on sufficiently large items.
Those who have never seen light/dark have no concept of colour. Simple as that. Although it is possible to detect ultraviolet and infrared radiations in lights, so it is still possible to determine colour of strong lights.

I think the real question is if someone was born blind would they even understand the concept of color?

You should ask NHL refs that Q, they seem to differentiate between colours really well even though they are more blind than a bat

blind to taste.
I actually had to wipe in a greyhound bus at night with no light, it was like being blind. It was terrifying. I just used all the toilet paper to be safe.

I like this topic because I've wondered the same thing. How do you even explain to them what a colour is?
