James Sheppard

Still pointless this season. Someone on the Wild board wondered if he'd fetch as much as a 5th round pick. Just wondering what some of you who've seen him play think of the guy.

Seen him play a couple of games each of the past few years. I think he still has the potential to become a good player in the NHL, but he should have spent a couple of years in the AHL with decent ice time and offensive responsibilities. The problem now is that he'd have to clear waivers to go down there.

As far as those "Sheppard for a 5th" people go, I guess fans of every team have been known to overvalue their own players when they're doing well, and undervalue them when they're not. If all it took to get James Sheppard was a 5th round pick, there would be at least 20 teams who'd make that phone call.

21 of the 31 5th round picks in the 2003 entry draft have not played a game in the NHL. 5 more have played less than 40 games. The others are Lee Stempniak, Nigel Dawes, Lasse Kukkonen, John Mitchell and Brad Richardson. A 21-YO Sheppard is worth more than a 5th round pick.

Swapping TJ Hensick from the Avs for Sheppard makes some sense for both teams. 2 struggling young guys that need a change in locale. Sheppard plays wing, yes?

Hey the Wings would love to give you a 5th rd pick for him, struggling or not thats a deal in my book, but in reality I think it would be more like a 3rd.

Sheppard plays center. Although he could probably be pushed to the wing if need be, but it's always a risk moving a player off of their natural position. Personally I wouldn't swap Sheppard for Hensick because I believe Sheppard has more potential, but then again, I'm a Wild fan so I may be prejudice.

Agreed. A 5th is way too low of a pick for such a young guy.

My name is also James Sheppard, so I think he's got 50+ goal potential.

I would give up a third rounder for him.

He's just about a complete bust at this point, but I could see his career playing out kind of like Brian Boyle's. He could find his niche as a fourth liner somewhere and make a decent name for himself playing in a bottom six role on a team that doesn't need him to score.

I only saw him play once this year and it looked like he didn't want to be there. but he's still talented and very young. I wouldn't start worrying too much for another year or so, but even then it's hard to tell, if he spends most of this year on the 4th line.

a trade would be good for him.

I'd definitely be interested. I would also trade something around a 3rd.

You can have Ilya Zubov who is in the KHL right now - seemed like all he wanted was a shot to play in the league, so you never know. I realize this isn't exactly much of a pot sweetener though. And don't let anyone tell you the guy had a bad attitude because it's just not the case.

I wouldn't trade for the guy unless it was a 6th or 7th round pick headed the other way. He looks completely lost out there. He would have gotten his first assist of the year last night, but unfortunately they don't award you assists for handing it to the other teams player right before they score.

He does seem to be out of sorts... however, you never know what a new team could do for his confidence.

That said, although Cheechoo works hard, his new start hasn't seemed to do much for his confidence.

I'd do a Sheppard/Harding for a 2nd probably at this point. Sheppard needs to go to the AHL plain and simple at this point. He has never been given the time to actually develop like he needed.

Problem is, as I've said before, he'd need to clear waivers, which he wouldn't.

Sheppard for Wellwood?

Both are struggling this year and could due with a change of scenery.
