Brent Sutter method of teaching accountability

Maybe its time Pat Quinn takes a page out of Brent Sutter's book.

Watching TSN this evening and they show a Brent Sutter practice after two Flames losses. Man was he PISSED! It was ugly. He makes Pat Quinn look like Barbara Ann Scott. Sutter skated the crap out of his team everytime they screwed up a drill. He made one of the players skate in front of his teammates around the centre ice circle a few times and then old him to stop. Then proceeded to tell him that that is exactly what he does in games, going for a big skate when theres a turnover allowing 3 on 2's against. He tells them to stop turn around and skate!

Has anyone on this board seen anything like this at an Oilers practice? Maybe its time considering their recent slide. Are there any Oilers players wth this habit of going for a skate on a turnover?

Not sure how productive that would be right now considering that many of them have or are recovering from the effects of the flu.

Humiliating players in front of there peers rarely works. Accountability is good. Humiliation not so much. I am glad we finally have a coach that knows the difference. Calgary can have him.

It's really hard to practice a team that hard like Sutter when most of the team is either a) injured, b) has either the regular flu or the H1N1 virus. The flu bug and injuries is what's hurting the Oilers the most right now. Hard to bag skate and injury-depleted flu-ravaged team.

Yes, Brent Sutter is the first coach to bag skate his team in the history of the NHL. No Oiler coach has ever been that revolutionary!

I've only seen a few Pat Quinn practices, but he held them pretty accountable to me. He didn't humiliate individual players in front of their teammates, but he had no problem stopping them, dropping a few F bombs and making them all do it over again.

Hmm.... Doesn't Iron Mike Keenan have the same reputation? Where is he coaching this year?

That being said does Brent Sutter do this constantly? Pat Quinn also stops drills and yells at his players. Doesn't mean he is known for it.

I think this thread may be overblowing the Iron Brent coaching strategy.

Agreed. This was the signal of MacT's failures last year by calling out Penner and Gagner. It's a desperate tactic.

Its a fine line, you don't want to ruin a players confidence.

Brent Sutter's method, or every second sports coach in the history of sports?

This sort of reinforcement never ever works long term, I'm not sure why you would be clamoring for it

edit: and on another note, Jesus **** are we already questioning Quinn as a coach? IT'S NOT THE COACHING, THIS TEAM SUCKS.

What a brilliant move by Darryl Sutter to bring in another angry hard-ass coach. It sure worked well for the flames for the last two seasons.

I can't wait to see the look on Brent's face after their annual 1st round KO

If Edmonton loses badly too often when healthy then I'm for doing this, but there's no sense in doing it now. Some of our guys should be held accountable for sloppy play, but there are a ton of guys with health issues who're still playing games.

Still can't believe Smid played through H1N1.

Coaching a team of proven veterans if a lot different then coaching a lot of kids trying to prove themselves.

Smid didn't catch H1N1. The H1N1 made the mistake of trying to latch onto Smid

BTW, Smid didn't simply recover from H1N1.

He sent that virus to HELL.

Exactly. Generally, players that are making mistakes know it and try to correct. Embarrassing adults in front of others gets you nothing but contempt, both from the player themselves and those forced to watch. It's ok to punish those that you feel aren't giving a full effort but do it by sitting them, cutting icetime, demotion, etc.
Let's see what happens when this flu has run it's course and Quinn/Renney's systems have time to be tried. If we're still losing, changes will need to be made.

Usually the coach bag skates his team until somebody pukes. A lot of Oilers might be puking and hacking before they even get to the rink. So, no, this isn't the answer right now with an unhealthy, banged up team.
