"I had hoped to wait until the end of November to really see if the team could come together," Rutherford told The Insiders. "Here we go again, with the injury to our best player. So, I'm starting to talk to other teams a lot more now. And, I'm embarrassed to say that this early in the season."
They need to get younger, it's as simple as that. Keeping Brandon Sutter ahead of Yelle is a start, but if Sutter only plays on the fourth line it's not going to make much of a difference. This team cannot continue to rely on the aging core, which is ancient and with a lot of miles on the odometer...save for C. Ward, Pitkanen, Gleason and Staal.
E. Cole missed 10 games with a broken leg. How serious was his injury?
Where would you place his value and what kind of numbers do you expect him to put up? He had some good statistical seasons after the lock-out until he was traded to Edmonton. Are his best years behind him? Is he physical?
I would imagine that this is the list of players being discussed:
Chad Larose
Ray Whitney (Pending waiver of his NTC)
Joe Corvo
Sergei Samsonov
Matt Cullen
The rest of our players are either immovable objects (Brind'Amour, Walker, Wallin), or young core players (Staal, Ruutu, Gleason, Pitkanen), or players performing to standards (Jokinen, Alberts, Sutter).
Ideally, I think JR is looking the hardest at moving Samsonov, Whitney, or Larose. Not in that order. However, Joe Corvo would make an interesting piece of trade bait with his contract coming off the books to a team that needs reinforcement on the blueline.

I highly doubt Erik Cole is in the targets to be moved considering he is 3 games played into a 2 year contract and hasn't even been remotely part of this skid due to being injured for the duration of it. I think that gives him a degree of immunity so to speak.
not sure what the Canes are going to do, but the players that I think they would make available are Whitney, Cullen, Corvo, and Gleason. They could promote McBain, Boychuk, or Bowman (and of coarse whatever they get in a trade). Caps might want Gleason, Dallas could use Corvo, Cullen might fit in Ana., Van, NYI, Buff. Whitney (more of a deadline player) St. Louis, Cal, NJ, Col ?? - just some ideas
i would really like corvo on the devils, from what i've seen he is a very smart defensman correct?
He has a booming shot and is a pretty decent D-Man. I have not seen a Joe Corvo brainfart in a long time, but he has been known to have them. He is shifty and a very good skater, sometimes even lays the body.

Yeah, he's good player. He becomes really good and useful d-man in Carolina. Can run PP, can score, can make assist... can play defence. Underrated player.
Montreal could definetly use Corvo for PP. Cole is an option as well. I think that Rutherford would be asking a high price for the players even with their struggling year. Thats the only problem with making a deal with Carolina.
If Rutherford does make calls, I doubt Gainey is going to making calls back. He is kind of a stand pat kind of guy all year long. Bergeron signing kind of was not a shock, but a surprise cause Gainey doesn't usually make those signings and deals in the season as it is now.
Gainey even stands pat on Deadline most times.
2 years ago at deadline - Huet for 2nd(WSH), Price new #1
last year - no moves (thought team we had was good enough) teams asked for too much.
I was talking with a friend recently about Cullen.. I would love to see Vancouver acquire him - certainly with their injuries now, but also when the team is healthy, he'd be a much better 3rd line center than Wellwood. Would be tough to fit him in the lineup, though.
rod is a former flyer, makes a lot of money, and is a little old on the way donwside of his career. sounds like homer will be salivating come the deadline
