maybe for Gogo.
but i dont even think Pens fans would do that right now.
Letang is the future of the puck moving defense.
Versteeg is prolly worth somehting of value, But consider the Hawks cap situation, RFA situation.
Now Consider the Pens win now mentality. (which oh, btw, matches the Hawks)
fill a hole, create another. look much as i hate to admit it crosby and malkin are 2 top players in the league, and while having versteeg would be nice, he wouldn't be as needed as letang will be in pittsburgh.
If the Hawks move Versteeg during the offseason it will most likely be for salary reasons and not hockey ones. It will be really interesting to see if Chicago has to move guys like him to re-sign Kane, Toews, and Keith like everyone has been talking about.
And if this is the case then I don't think Chicago will be looking to get equivalent talent back but rather draft picks/prospects. And if that is the case I'd be interested in what it would take for the Penguins to get him.
I'm not sure how Pittsburgh gains from this...Versteeg isn't an elite enough winger to make it worth it to give up a player like Letang...with all due respect to Versteeg, who is a fine winger in his own right...
1) Hawks can't afford Letang next year because of his raise.
2) Pens might lose Gonchar next year, or he will retire in the next few years at some point anyway, so Letang needed to run PP.
3) Pens won't trade Goligoski instead, turns out he's on a bargain deal at 1.833 million for 2 more years after this one.
The Pens could use Versteeg as a player but at 3.1 million, he's certainly not undervalued. Pens cap space according to nhlnumbers.com is currently 146,000$. Talbot @ 1.05 million on LTIR for a couple months change what, 200,000$?
