Gazing at the boxscores from last night's games, I couldn't help but to notice some of the attendance figures: PHX around 6,000; TB a bit over 12,000; NYI, a little over 8,000, Nashville, a bit over 12,000. These figures are a disgrace. I know it's an old theme, but it's never been more obvious that expansion in the south was a ridiculous mistake and these teams should be moved where people know and appreciate the game (and yes, the Isles are an anomoly here--build the Lighthouse or move them).
Uhm. It's Halloween. Why don't you check the movie box office this week, see how well films released on Halloween do.
Generally speaking, most people would rather be doing a lot of other things on Halloween than spending hundreds of dollars to watch a hockey team (that in most of those cases) is more likely to lose than win.
I'm not familiar at all with the demographics of hockey game attendance. Is it really families that go to the games? I figured it was mostly single white dorks such as myself. Interesting.

Do you think they should have moved Pittsburgh before they got Crosby? Their attendance was miserable that year.
Do you think they should have moved Chicago before old man Wirtz died?
Attendance problems are not just a southern thing.
Halloween
Yankees in the World Series
Florida Gators playing (a factor in Tampa Bay)
I still don't understand the fascination of attendance numbers with hockey fans. You never hear baseball fans talk about the Blue Jays finishing 29th out of 30 in % filled.
They were playing in Philadelphia. So probably people didn't have to decide which game to go to.
Aside from which, I thought most Isles fans are Mets fans anyway.
I was pondering not going to the Isles game last night to watch the Yankees, but my dad and I went because we knew there was going to be a rain delay. Plus it being Halloween there wasn't a big crowd expected anyway.
Most Isles fans are Mets fans, yes. But there's plenty of Isles-Yanks fans too, me being one of them Look on the Isles board we have a lot of Yankee fans.
Yeah, it was Halloween. That's why Montreal drew only 21,273 and Philly only drew 19,076 and Boston only 17,565. That explanation might be more effective if these teams didn't have terrible attendance all year. Those are the bottom four teams in attendance this year.
It will be said again, people like winning teams. Many say the Lightning should be moved. Thats stupid. The season after they won the cup they were 2nd to Montreal in attendance. Up until the last season they were top 10. Thats an average of 18,500 people. They are just crappy now. Its sad but thats how it is.
Just because its warm here doesnt mean a thing. I see kids playing hockey outside everyday. It is liked alot here.
Again, helps to know...but most people there aren't willing to give their current owner any of their money since he partnered up with the idiot.
Hockey's hockey. If you can't give away the tickets and fill the seats just because of a bad owner, it shouldn't be there. If I had the oppertunity the people of Phoenix/Glendale have of basically being given tickets I'd be at every game. I can't justify not going to a game just because of a "bad" owner(unless it was whatshisname in Chicago).

Boston also was below Florida in attendance, as was Chicago, in the years where they were losing. Guess two of the Original 6's should've been moved, too?

What's the difference? Hockey's hockey, but they're certainly driving the point home. Get a new owner, I think they'll come in quite a bit more.
Again, it's not like Canadian teams haven't had attendance problems in the past.

Winning is a zero sum game. All teams can sell out when they win but for every win one team loses. All teams must eventually lose so the most important thing is the team's ability to sell tickets even when they are not winning because anyone could sell out if they had the Penguins team right now.

I think most of those teams have been around for more then 15 years.

Do you really think the people of Phoenix even know about the fiasco going on let alone care? No. I'm they can't even name the owner or what he's done wrong. It's just not a hockey market in my opinion, I'm sorry.
