Paul Mara: Mr. Under Appreciated

This guy has been our most solid D-man so far this season, IMO.

I have always been a fan of this guy and I was very happy when we signed him. I love what he brings.

I agree. He's stepped up most in Markov's absence.

I thought he looked a little shaky in the first two games, but since the Western trip he's been quite solid.

I don't know about best defenseman (I think Hamrlik has played extremely well). I think in terms of value, he has probably been our best though, yeah.

I liked this signing from the beginning and he has done well, the best deal in UFA for any team this 2009 season for cap cost as a top 4 Dman.

I really wish we would have signed him to a 2 or 3 year deal. He's a very solid guy to have in your D group. He could have only wanted a 1 year deal too though I guess.

I disagree to an extent. Most solid? Hamrlik is playing like a true #1 defenseman - he's been just incredible.

Mara and Gorges come up next for me who have both been nothing short of completely solid. They are great defenseman.

Spacek has also been very good. He hasn't brought the offense, but his first pass is top notch and his defensive game is very good.

I've been raving about Mara all year though (from the time we signed him until now) that he's been great and was a good signing. Such a strong defenseman who does everything you need. 5 or 6 points on the season now, I believe.

If we ever go on a losing streak again, I'm sure a Mara themed bearded GDT will turn things around.

Love Mara too ! He's very solid in his own zone, always make the good simple play and he can contribute on the offense too.

Good addition Mr.Gainey

Agreed. Hamrlik has really stepped it up.

Mara has been quietly solid in every game so far though. Nothing not to like about his game.

If he had just a little bit more speed,he would be a top 3 in this league IMO.What a rocket he's got.

Picked up his 5th assist of the year,on pace for a very good offensive season, keep it going Paul

Hamrlik is the one we see in 07-08.

Not even close.

What do you know, people call him underrated, when this is what I was expecting from him. Well, not 5 assists this early, but still.

Pretty sure he means a top three defenseman on a team...not a Lidstrom/Neidermayer/Pronger. At least, I hope.

Pierre McGuire is a man that thinks very highly of himself indeed.

About Mara and the D...

If the Habs can FINALLY learn to win consistently without Markov... the team may be an awesome machine when he makes it back
