Brian Gionta's been nothing but a beast for the Habs so far, in many aspects of the game.
He's gritty even if he's small, goes to the net, has a sick shot, good vision, and looks like a good teammate. Add this to being responsible in his own end.
He's got 4 goals and about 3-4 posts with how many missed open nets? Sometimes I feel part of Higgins came along with him (#21) when he signed here.
If Gio could finish better sometimes, he'd easily be near the top of the league in goals right now.
I'm NOT saying he's as good as Ovechkin or Kovalchuk, but I just wanted to point this out to those who questioned why we signed a guy with 20 goals last season. Once Gomez and Cammy start lighting the lamp, we'll be scary good.

Thoughts on this?
PS. He better get the C
I know I said it a couple of times in the prediction threads... but it's worth repeating.
GIONTA got his 65 pts and 20 something goals WHILE PLAYING:
-IN NEW JERSEY
-ON THE 2ND LINE
now. New Jersey has never been a very offensive team, let alone NJ's 2nd line.
IMO, on MTL's first line, if they play like they are playing now (all out offense), he could easily get 35+ goals.
I love this guy.. He reminds me of Koivu in a lot of ways but much more talented overall.
You said it. Reminds me of Koivu a lot! He's wicked fast and buzzes all over. And not afraid AT ALL to muck it up. Its amazing to watch! This is what guys like Plekanecs need to see. (and it shows in his play).
<------- He is now officially my favorite Hab! Captain Gionta has a nice ring to it to...
with some mobile and offensive defensemen, most of our fowards would have better stats, especially Gionta who really is playing like a star.. Spacek is starting to get better, Bergeron should help the PP but I cant wait to have Markov Subban and Spacek all in the line-up.. our little fowards will shine even more..

He is amazing, and he and gomeX are quickly becoming fan favs... but lets not forget #79.

I agree, I like all 4 acquisitions Bob made up front.
Gomez Gionta Cammalerri and Moen, although all are over payed they play hard and have visible talent and uses. Where the problem lays is of course the injury bug but also the surrounding cast.
Latendresse - biggest disappointment thus far
AK - I think he may get shipped out soon with his brother (Frolov anyone, a younger version of Kovalev)
Lapierre - expected more from him, maybe playing on the wing on the second line will do him soome good

Gionta had a great tongue-in-cheek line last year when a reporter congratulated him on scoring 20 goals again. He said something to the effect of "I'd have 40 if Zubrus wasn't my center. They ought to give him the Selke for shutting me down."

I know it's easy to forget, but the Devils from 1998-2001 were among the highest scoring in the league. The 2000-01 Devils led the league with 295 goals. Last year, the Red Wings led the league with 295 goals.
But it's good to see that he's playing well for you guys. He was slowed down by a groin injury after his 48 goal year and eventually had his spot on the PP taken by Zach Parise. Combine dropping from the #1 to the #2 PP unit with having Zubrus replacing Gomez, and the drop in production was predictable.

I'd say that he is a scoring version Saku Koivu. He doesnt have Saku's vision or Hockey IQ. They do play the game with great passion and high intensity. Some just forget too quickly how awsome Saku was before all the injuries and cancer.
Personally I think Koivu would have had a better carrer if he could have quitely collected his 20 goals and 70 points on the second line with an 'A'. Rather than forced to be captain of a losing team with no talent for 11 years.

Yeah...He played with Patrik Elias ..remember this.(Elias had..81pts last year?)Just last year, Parise was 4rth in the league with 96 points. They were top-10 for GF. Believe me, they've changed.

I agree in the case of Koivu.
But the Habs has to have a captain and Gionta fits the bill the most.

Reminds me of Pre-2003-2004 Koivu, before he started playing like he was at the end of his career. Gionta's not nearly as talented as Koivu was though, but I like him a lot. I also think they should wait if they think about making him captain, no reason to put all that pressure on him and his family.
One of the things I love about Gionta is when there is a turnover in the offensive zone, he often recovers the puck & keeps the offensive zone pressure on.
Our forecheck is awesome with the 1st line.
Sooner or later this team will break out & start scoring lots of goals.
It's coming - I can feel it...

That's a pretty nasty comment, even if it's funny.
