Sobotka's famous final scene at the Dunk

I passed on the Pats with family and friends to see the Baby B's with yute, and was not disappointed at all by the game. (the weather and the cost of tickets and the rest of the day didn't excite me either); plus I already promised, so....as for the game-

The Portland Pirates and the Bruins more often than not get into it pretty good. There is a lot of dislike here, and with Kevin Dineen as their coach they are going to play hard and at times on the edge.

This is no after-the-fact opinion. I said to my kid during warmups watching Sobotka that he sure seemed at ease, happy, and different for a guy that did not get called up last night. I even texted Eric (posts here) that 'Sob looks happy and at peace' (the last part was a joke or so I thought at the time, evidently not)

Then the game started. Sobotka was all over the place. He had 5 points (2G/3A) by the 41 minute mark, and looked to be headed for 6 or more after a Pirates player jumped Machand and started a decent brawl that led to Providence having a two-man advantage for nearly two full minutes, and then another 5 added on after that.

He never did score or assist, but had his chances; he probably left another 3 or 4 points on the ice when he or teammates got stoned on outstanding chances by Enroth.

Sobotka also had three or four solid body checks and skated his arse off on the back check. I was sitting there thinking while watching him back check up ice with a 6-2 lead, 'not sure what Murray is doing to this guy, but he stays here for 80 games he is going to score freakin 120-150 points, this is ridiculous. If he had those guys from Hershey last year he'd get 150 points playing like this.' As it is, he got 8 points in the last two games, and played well all over the ice.

What is ironic about the three players called up is how much Portland hates Marchand, Sobotka, and likely Lefebvre.

Lefebvre got in a fight infront of us with Kostka, a defenseman in the third period. They grappled for a time, but that was really for Lefebvre to get his adversaries helmet off; and then he hit him with a punch that Lucic would be jealous off. It was sick. The poor ******* on Portland went down like he just got hit by Mike Tyson during his reign of terror (for those fight fans, when Tyson was at the top of his game being trained by Kevin Rooney); it was quite a shot.

Marchand got jumped by I believe Portland's Cody McCormick, who has played quite a bit in the NHL as a fourth line energy/tough guy. He played last year with Colorado, and dressed a lot. But he looked like he just jumped and attacked Marchand at center ice on a break in action as Marchand was heading back to the bench for a line change. I have no idea if Marchand said something or gave him a look? but it wouldn't shock me if he did. However, Marchand has been pretty quiet in the yap-o-meter if you ask me in the couple of games I have seen Providence play this year.

Back to Sobotka. He probably was told something was up and they were clearing space for him, and to sit tight, something was going down.

Sobotka can tear up the AHL but at the NHL I will be happy to see him as a third line LW who skates his lane and uses his quickness and speed to create havoc on the forecheck. If he can drop in 10-15 this year and build from that I'll be very happy.

I will miss Kobasew. I like him a lot. From his days at BC to the Flames to his stay at Lowell during the lockout, and of course the Bruins. Bummer.
Hopefully he will help the Wild win many games and put the Leafs father and father in the rear.

Awesome post. SOB should be full of confidence when he gets out there.

As usual great post Dan.

My question is, Can Sob bring this type of play to the NHL on a regular basis ?

My personal opinion is that if SOB gets significant ice time with guys like Krejci and Wheeler, the answer is yes, but we won't know until it happens. I believe that SOB is very similar in skill and style to Sturm, but with a nastier side. He hasn't shown the offensive stuff because he's been on the 4th line for the most part.

I hate to see Looch get hurt, but I'm hoping that this is SOB's and Marchand's coming out party. If they play the way they did in the preseason and in PRO, it will make for some hard decisions when Looch returns.

actually, no...at the AHL level his quickness and speed allow him to blow by people, get on people quick, and his size is not as big an issue- and he can go to the net more without sustaining such truculence.

The NHL is an entirely different animal for Sob, however, he can be at least for now a third line LW capable of putting up 15 goals and 15 assists, while contributing like he did two years ago when he came up with his speed, quickness, and physical game.

He's a unique asset and in the right role to start off should be a great addition.

I think Marchand has a better nose for the net (no pun intended) at the NHL level, but Sobotka is so quick he should be able to get in to scoring areas fast and bury a few.

I appreciate the detail of your post DKH.

Hopefully this infusion of AHLers will light up what has frankly been a dim team that has looked uninterested in working hard.

Hey does this mean you'll be picking him back up in the pool...

Actually I think the decisions will come easy when Looch returns..

Thanks again Dan. Looks like I'll be coming home on Wednesday and logging on and watching some hockey and keying on watching these two kids.

I really hope they know what is taking place here and bring every ounce of their A games.

Great post as usual Dan.

I will respectfully disagree with your projections for SOB though. I think this kid is a top6 NHL forward in the Mike Fisher mold. How and when he fully realizes his potential at the NHL level is another question. But I'll be shocked if he only becomes a 15-20g / 40 point 3rd liner. I think he's capable of being a consistent 25/60 guy.

Marchand's another one I have high hopes for. I think he's been criminally underrated by us for a long time. The kid has phenomenal hands, is Samsonov quick in the corners. Fearless. A good quick sniper's release. Speed. And a history of stepping up in big games.. I'm hoping he can become a Gionta type for the Bruins.

Either way, looking forward to watching these guys develop this year.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm expecting big things from both of these boys... and although they'll be feeling nerves no doubt... this situation allows them to be comfortable (not the bad comfortable, not complacent... just able to play their games without worrying if they'll get sent down) which should only help them.

Bringing them up ratchets up our speed, grit and skill levels. Excited to see where Claude puts them tomorrow.

Thanks Dan.

The only thing Sobotka hasn't shown at the NHL level is the ability to light the lamp. If he can be counted on for even 10 the rest of the way, I'll be very pleased.

The team's off to a sluggish start, and the GM responds with a small move, but the RIGHT MOVE...

This is getting me pumped all over again for what kind of hockey I'm going to see in the upcoming few games...I can't wait!
