CBC story about NHL players and the scary internet
I watched CBC's insider segment tonight about NHL players and the big bad scary Internet....what a joke.
First, they make it sound like it was a tragic thing that a picture of Sidney Crosby sleeping with the Stanley Cup was posted on the internet (I guess as a joke from some Penguin teammates?). To Crosby's credit, he didn't get as dramatic about it as Elliott Freedman and the CBC piece, he just said it could have been a lot worse, but he wasn't too thrilled about it.
But then it got ridiculous.
Milan Lucic says if a fan asks to take a picture with him, he won't. He doesn't take pictures with fans because of the big scary Internet.
Gosh, I love it when athletes and celebrities try to use some scare tactic as an excuse to be act like jerks.
To Jonathan Toews credit, again, he didn't seem to get where CBC was going on this story. He said if a fan wants a picture he doesn't see what is so bad about it.
What ever happened to common sense? Players can't take pictures with fans because it might end up on the internet?
How about if you don't do something scandlous it won't end up on the Internet?
Things I took from that segment:
Lucic is a jerk and not very bright.
Freedman should be off tv.
CBC should try a little harder the next time they want to do a hard-hitting piece about something so "dangerous". I mean wow, there is a picture of Crosby sleeping on the Internet taken by friends/teammates. The horror.
Some photographs taken at Mario Lemieux's house at a Cup celebration this year that showed the inside of his house, his office, his trophy cabinet, his wine collection and shots of his daughter found its way circulated around various blog sites. I found it a bit creepy.
A photo of a hockey player walking to the rink for practice out in public is one thing, when you start getting into shots taken in private of their home and family, that should be off limits.

I'll agree there is some line that those pictures probably crossed (like posting pictures of players wives or family not from like a team program) but there's a difference between say posing for pictures with fans after practice or after a game and some of the pictures we've seen of players. Like Garth Snow and the girls, or the whole O'Byrne stealing a purse incident, the guys on the Sabres drunk, etc.
If you're behaving, taking a picture with a fan shouldn't be anything to cause you grief.

His teammates suck at posting embarrasing pictures. They should have at least drawn all over him with lipstick, or tucked a jockstrap under his chin, or stuck his hand in warm water....

Clefty, yeah, but in this piece they were clearly talking about in public and fan interaction.
Freedman asked Crosby if someone says he is their favorite player and asks for a picture, "Would you allow it?"
I mean, common sense please.
Stuff like that is different than personal things within someone's house...although to play devil's advocate, I assume the person who took the pics of Mario's wine collection (I really don't see the big deal about it personally...people get way to edgey about harmless pictures) was not some pyscho fan, who skimmed past the security and peaked through a window. If that bothered Mario, he should be more careful about who he allows in his home.
But the CBC story wasn't about that. They were asking players if they would take pictures with fans when asked.
To use the scary internet as an excuse is really lame and completely lacks common sense.
I mean, I do know what they were getting at, don't go to bed with 3 strippers you don't know and let them take pics of it......but since they didn't phrase the question that way, asking players if a fan asks them for a picture would they do it, was really absurd.
The fact Lucic says he would say no because he's afraid of the internet is just a sad statement about his intelligence and the type of person he is.
If you're behaving, taking a picture with a fan shouldn't be anything to cause you grief.
Exactly.
And really, if you're going to dress up as a princess and you're a public figure, than you shouldn't be concerned about it getting out. If you are....how about you don't do it....
That's what I think is stupid about the whole thing. Players behave badly (or do something stupid and embarrassing) and it naturally gets out and they catch flack and embarrassment for the things they do.
Then because of that, they take it to an extreme and use it as an excuse to act like a jerk to a fan.
Guess what Milan Lucic? There is no danger for you to allow a fan of yours to take a pic with you. If you're going to get hammered, dress as a princess and swing from the ceiling.............well then that's a different story.
And I thought the whole angle of "Lord help us, a pic of Crosby sleeping with the Cup is on the Internet" was ridiculous. Out of all the things in the world to worry about.
His teammates suck at posting embarrasing pictures. They should have at least drawn all over him with lipstick, or tucked a jockstrap under his chin, or stuck his hand in warm water....
They were decent about it. Good for them. I've seen You Tube videos of "sleeping pranks" like you're describing, some of them are stupid.
I'm just guessing, they might have put his arm around the Cup like that and that was the joke. Or maybe he isn't that deep of a sleeper and they couldn't do all that stuff you talked about
Either way, it was harmless. My life didn't change either way now that I've seen that picture.

I think to understand what they are trying to say you should read this.
I can understand how you guys might be upset, after all we live in a culture where we expect our athletes to go out of their way to do this type of stuff and if they don't, they are just big d-bags. Which I don't agree with.

The person who took those pictures is a very good friend of the Lemieux family. He sent them to some family members who sent them to some friends. Eventually they found their way to fans who put them on their blogs, Facebook pages, etc.

Wonder what you think of your Daughter when she wants to take a picture with a football player and her thought is. SHOW BOOBIES!

... But an instant before her mother snapped the photo with a cellphone camera, the woman tried to take off her shirt.
“It’s happened four or five times,” Tebow said with a sigh. “Most of the time I just dive out of the picture. Some people can just be crazy.”
Four or five times women wanted to take a picture with him while taking their clothes off?

Well I didn't see the piece, but I think you need to understand that if photographs that were intended to be private are being leaked out on the internet, certain people are going to become a lot more guarded with their privacy. I don't really think Milan Lucic is justified in being called a jerk or unintelligent.
I think your comment about Mario Lemieux having to be careful of who enters his house is weak. Its not his fault they ended up online.
You say they have nothing to worry about if they're behaving. Well, how about a little co-action on that front, and a touch more respect and better behaviour from certain fans. The article posted above is a prime example.
Actually, that article is a good example of what I'm talking about.
This quote:

Athletic departments now monitor social networking Web sites, and cellphones are collected at the door of college parties to try to keep embarrassing or illegal moments off the Internet.
My heart just isn't weeping for these guys who having "illegal" moments that need to be covered up.
You don't want people to think you're getting trashed at a bar and act like a fool? Then don't do it.
To use that as a justification not to take pictures with fans as Freedman asked Crosby (who did answer that he tries to be accomodating as possible and usually would say yes in that situation...Lucic said "not to be a bad guy, but I don't think you can really", Toews said he doesn't see what's wrong with it and they probably don't have malicious intent but if there's beer in the picture he doesn't want it in, Getzlaf said he doesn't allow pictures at bars because he doesn't want people to think he's going to bars and getting drunk (well then Ryan...see the quote from that article....what it really is about is them behaving badly and trying to cover it up so they're taking it out on the fans which enables the players to act like even more of a jerk)....
Anyhow when Freedman asked Crosby "If someone comes up to you and says you're my favorite player, could I please have a picture? Would you allow it?" none of the stuff you're talking about is a justification for them to say no.
In another part of the segment they played part of a seminar a professional gives to players, he says in his video that as a player you need to be very careful when in public because now people have cell phones and can take pictures and videos of what you're doing and saying.......again, don't act like a jerk and there's not a problem.
