Eric Nystrom nets first career hat-trick

what a night for the son of a legend. first multi-goal night of his career and while playing on the Flames 4th line. and to think only a couple of years ago many Calgary fans considered him a prospect bust

Not to rain on the parade, but every dog has their day. Time will tell if the 26 year old is still anything more than a 4th liner.

With that said, its awesome that he scored 3/5 of the goals he scored last year in one game. And no, I didn't need a calculator to come up with that fraction.

Go Blue.

Flames have gotta have one of the best fourth-lines in the NHL currently. It's been dominant in every game so far.

Sjostrom-Nystrom-Prustrom, I love it.

Yeah, checking out the stat sheet in the first few games has yielded some surprises.

50 hattricks in 50 games?

He's gonna have to have some 6 goal nights too.

I don't think anyone's saying that Nystrom's going to be more than a checking-line guy, but teams need guys like that. Nystrom brings a lot of toughness and defensive capability; any scoring he does for the Flames is gravy.

Great story from him. His career has been injurey-plagged and it stalled his development. He was considered a bust from years 2005-2007. This is great for him, hope he keeps it up and becomes a good 3rd line player that can play on the 2nd line.

Um a couple of minutes ago Calgary fans considered him a prospect bust, too.

Boyd Devereaux got a hat trick for the Leafs last year. Does that mean he's finally coming into his own? And if so, why isn't he signed?!

Edit: Congrats to Nystrom though! Hard work!

Nystrom is fantastic, everytime his line plays they dominate in terms of possesion. He is a great 3rd/4th line player who was remarkably clutch for Calgary down the stretch last season. Good on ya Nyzerman.

From the replays I saw he did not touch the puck on two of those goals. Don't really care either way but I think they're going to change it. The Pardy shot deflected under Halak's arm and Kronwall's deflected on Gorges' stick. Anyway good game by Nystrom and the Flames tonight.

I would like to know what Calgary fans you were talking to!

Nystrom has always been known for his physicality and defense. And tonight he showed that he can play offense too.

Most flames fans love Nystrom, and his game. We really dont expect alot of points but his grit and effort is very appreciated here.

He was a fan favourite last year, and was one of our best forwards in the playoffs.

His line has dominated way more than Iginla's line thus far this season.

I'd say the only people who'd consider him a bust would be the ones who had ridiculous expectations of him in the first place. For the most part only the most optimistic of fans saw him as anything more than a 3rd liner, but pretty much since 03 it was clear he'd be a checking player who worked hard and was responsible defensively, perhaps with the hope he'd be one with a bit of a scoring touch.

Cancel that. They just changed credit of the goal to Staffan Kronwall.

Edit: Sportsnet's got it too. Of course, Loubardias called him Stefan Kronwall and then Martine Gaillard called him Ste-phane Kronwall. God damn, people do your homework. It's STAFF-an!

Nystrom's 3rd goal was changed to Kronwall. Unfortunately, no hatty for Nystrom tonight.

sounds like one of his goals is getting changed as per sportsnet so, no Hatty but still good game by Nystrom.

Nystrom shook his head at Iginla with a "I didn't score it" look on this face after Kronwall scored his first NHL goal. It's too bad Kronwall didn't get to celebrate it.

Nystrom has 20 goal potential IMO, he would be a 3rd liner on just about every NHL team. He is very similar in the mold of Burrows except he hits much harder and can actually fight. But his hands are as good as any other 3rd liners in the league.
