About our offense/should we trade for a forward now?

Cherry clearly thought Kadri deserved a spot on the Leafs team. After watching tonight's game, the Leafs have had absolutely no offensive players in my opinion, that was spectacular to watch nor dangerous. Granted, we had 40+ shots and Stajan got 2 goals (both were on the power play) but seriously I was not impressed at all by our offense. There was no player on the ice from our team that I saw as a player that might get us those crucial goals.

I seriously wished we kept Kadri around because this team is lacking "skilled" forwards big time (other than Stalberg), and by the time Kessel arrives, I can't see a guy like Stajan as a legitimate first line center to feed Kessel the pucks.

I really think in the next month or so, rather than waiting til trade deadline, Leafs should consider trading Stajan, Ponikarovski, MVR, Stempniak and other players who's contracts are expiring to a team like Chicago (only an example) who seem like the one team that will have financial problems next year. We can probably get a decent return in picks and a legitimate first line center/winger. (We can't always trust guys like Marleau, Savard and Kovalchuk to hit the UFA market).

Side note: I do realize it was one game...but I still cant see us getting any better offensively with this group we have, until Kessel comes.

I want to win a cup in the future and I am would not go out of the way and risk letting an 18 year old who is not very big getting injured in an 82 game grind.

We should have given him the 9 game tryout. No doubt in my mind.

Yup. There is absolutely no reason to have Kadri up.

I don't agree with Don.

I think our problem was more our defense. The offense will get the junk goals we need - our defense needs to dominate our end.

I also would have liked to see a few games from Kadri.

But I do have fear that he would get injured with his size in the NHL. I don't think it was a bad move at all sending him back to Junior.

Regarding your first question...the answer is NO. It's the D and uneven goaltending that remains our problem.

Uhh, its only 1 game. Some new faces, the team needs time to gel.

I mean come on, give them a chance. We were 10th in goals last year, and now we've added Kessel.

They made the right move keeping Kadri in junior.

We scored 3 goals, and took 46 shots on Price tonight. Our top 2 lines produced in a big way, and our #1 center scored 2 goals. Are you honestly complaining about offence of all things? If you're going to complain about something its Komisarek's discipline.

Oh and in terms of Kadri, I don't you'd be able to see much of his "skill" this year. He's a tremendous player, with good speed and hands but he simply isn't strong enough to play the game he plays in the NHL effectively this season. I don't see the harm in giving a year to put some mass on, and gain some more confidence and then inserting him into our top 6 next season and letting him play with a healthy Kessel right off the bat. It's called setting him up for success, instead of to fail.

A few dumb penalties and some poor defensive coverage in our own zone. I did like the way our forwards dominated the for-check, I don't like how Wilson was constantly rolling 3 lines and totally forgot about the 4th after the first period. They the 4th line had a few good chances and some good hits then he just burried them on the bench. I also thought Ian White had a shocking game, made so many mistakes trying to hold onto the puck when he should have been moving it or banking it out off the boards and shocking defensive zone coverage. Vesa had a good game imo he saved the ones he should of saved or at least the ones I saw missed the 1st goal but I think he will bring it this season. Disappointing 1st game but there is still 81 games left to go and we got a point out of this one so not all is lost. I also think the stajan line might turn into something decent for the Leafs lots of speed and some nice passing going on there.

Shouldn't we be asking if they should be trading for a defender who can skate and stay out of the box?

Seriously?

This team has enough offense. Kessel, Grabovski, Ponikarovsky, Hagman, Stalberg, Kulemin, Blake, Stempniak and Stajan are a solid cast of forwards.

Goaltending is where this team needs a boost. Hopefully Gustavsson solves those problems.

With Bozak, Stalberg and Hanson in the wings?

No thanks. He'll get a few pictures in a Canada jersey biting a medal and be back to us for next year.

Kaberle. And I don't think Schenn was penalized tonight.

We'll get a better effort. This is a very capable D.

Things will slow down, no worries. First game of the season, pretty exciting. Lots of things to talk about.

I posted above and said "I realize its only one game" and I have said previously that our offense is not the greatest and needed some major help, and we went and got Kessel which I was happy with. I think this Leafs team will do quite well (I even said they will make the playoffs) but I remember last year, Stajan was on a PPG pace and he ended up below that.

I just think, if there is a time to improve our offense, why not do it within October-November, rather than waiting til trade deadline to see if we are a playoff team or not.

Nontheless, I do predict a trade will happen sooner or later, as room needs to be made for guys like Bozak, Kulemin.

White did nothing to make himself tradeable tonight. I'm not of "the sky is falling", cause I think they will be fine, but tonight XLB, White and Schenn were crap, Beauch was trying to figure out what Schenn was doing and Komi spent 15 minutes in the box. Kaberle was really good.

I think our guys ( the LEafs) were pretty excited too. In some cases, Beauchemin and Komisarek, a bit too excited.

It will fall into place.

I'd like to see Gustavsson get a shot at Washington.

Who would you trade, and are other teams interested in who you would trade? Are other teams interested in giving up scoring?

Yeah I think the next game will be a lot better. First meaningful game in the hockey mecca - who isn't going to be nervous?

LOL

Beauchemin was just plain terrible, it certainly wasn't because of Schenn. Only defenceman worth talking about was Kaberle tonight.

Me too, but I don't expect it to happen. I really think Wilson is going to give Voosa a chance to prove himself, so that whenever Goose takes over he has no one to blame but himself.
