If he goes unclaimed, then there are a few GMs that need to rethink their life. He played great last season in the 5 games he got. He is at least a capable back up.
Atlanta should be all over him considering it would give them a legit prospect to replace the oft injured Kari Lehtonen.
San Jose & Calgary could use a backup.
The Rangers could bring him back free of charge...
I'd love to see the Wings bring home a former University of Michigan star.

Atlanta is fine without him, they have Pavelec who's a far better prospect IMO. Even if Lehtonen were to be injured Montoya wouldn't be the first choice on their depth chart.
San Jose maybe.
Calgary most definitely, they need someone that's capable of giving Kipper more then 5 days off a season.
Rangers... meh, they have Valiquette who's a decent backup. Lundqvist isn't going anywhere any time soon. He could be the backup in 2010-11, but there are a few places he could be the backup in 2010-11, along with quite a few other goalies in the NHL, Europe and the AHL.

Yeah, he was good in 5 games with the Coyotes.
But in a much larger sample, he was absolutely brutal in the AHL, outplayed by a minor-league journeyman in San Antonio, and barely a capable AHL backup.
Personally, I see Calgary as the only viable option.
If San Jose didn't trust Greiss enough to be a backup for Nabokov this season, something would have been done by now, probably for a veteran stopgap a la the Boucher situation last year.
They already have a lot of youth organizational depth at goaltender in Stalock, Sexsmith, Sateri, et al.
Montoya hasn't been a relevant NHL prospect in years in my mind. He'll never, I repeat, never be a no. 1 goaltender in the NHL, hes overrated and deserves to rot in the minors.

Afraid you are way off base here. I seriously doubt he will get claimed.
I should also mention that probably the main reason he lost the job to LaBarbera is because Montoya has a two-way deal and LaBarbera has a one-way deal. The Coyotes are bankrupt. We aren't going to pay LaBarbera an NHL salary to play in the AHL. It's just not going to happen.
The Flames won't claim him. They gave McElhinney a 2 year contract with the intention of giving him significantly more playing time. Even if he falters, the Flames have Irving who could fill in as the backup.
