Last year we got no respect. Big difference this year.

I seem to recall that a lot of people before the last season thought the Canucks would suck. Missing the playoffs level of sucking.

This year it is different. TSN still hasn't named us in their pre-season power rankings, and there's only about 8 teams left.

I think the fact that we made the second round of the playoffs last year, and the fact that Luongo and the Sedins are signed long-term has caused people to see us as a serious contender this year.

Last year, I enjoyed being an underdog, knowing that we would make critics look stupid. This year I'm enjoying the respect.

Which do you prefer in the preseason? Underdog or respected contender?

I don't care what people think of us really, only thing I care about is how well the team does. Sure it feels nice that these analysts believe in our team but it was just as satisfying proving them all wrong last year.

you know what

every year we get ranked highly at the start, we always collapse and suck

every year we get picked to miss the playoffs, we step it up and surprise

so this isn't a good thing

I like the underdog status but after what the team accomplished last season, it's nice for my team to finally be considered a top team in the NHL. If there are only 8 spots left and the Canucks haven't been mentioned yet, that's getting right up there into "elite" territory. At least in TSN's eyes. If that means anything.

Then what is "CDC" or "CalgaryPuck"?

Certainly not last season. Some "experts" were predicting "gloom and doom". Oh noes! No Naslund/No Morrison! Where are we going to be getting the goals from!

I thought those power rankings were just based on the rankings at the end of last year, and there is no more to read into the placement than that.

To the people who will inevitably fill this thread with 2-cool-4-skool style comments expressing how little they care what anyone thinks of their team (aka "All I care about is watching good hockey"): If you care so little what other people think, why are you spending all this time reading what other people have to say about your team on a hockey message board? I call bull****. You can lie to yourself, but you can't lie to us.

To the original poster: Expectations are a funny thing. I tend to keep mine pretty low regardless of how amazing my team appears to look on paper. The season is a mighty long time. I do however like to see that this team is getting some props and some respect, because I happen to think they deserve it, and I also happen to think it will have next to no bearing on how they actually play.

The only way to really gain respect is to win a cup, until we do so, all Canucks fans around BC should eat mounds of humble pie. Who gives a damn what CDC, CP, HardonForHorcoff.fail.com, bluehell, TSN, ABC, Versus, CBC, God and Allah think...

Vancouver and its inferiority complex

For years now, Detroit is constantly rated as one of the best teams in the NHL, and the team to beat

So they knowing this, they suck it up, they live up to it, and they don't disappoint. One of the most successful teams this decade

... this is what the Nucks are attempting to do and live up to

We were rated so low last year because the so called "experts" that write these articles don't know **** about the Canucks. "Oh they missed the playoffs, lost Naslund and Morrison. 12th for them".

They fail to realize the year before last our D was hit with an almost laughable amount of injuries. As much as it's a crock to use injuries as an excuse, sometimes they just are. When Zack Fitzgerald plays NHL games, it's okay to use injuries as an excuse. With our D even half healthy (which it was last year) we're a playoff team and a division contender like we showed. It was no surprise to me.

Most pre-season rankings are simply based on the end result of the season prior with some adjustments to reflect off-season moves.

Last year pundits places us out of the playoffs and why wouldn't they? We had a rookie GM and a bad season right before.

I don't think TSN meant this to be based off last years rankings.

Quote:
Fantasy expert Scott Cullen ranked the teams heading into the season, and each will be unveiled daily based on his pre-season Fantasy Power Rankings, from 30-1.
Besides, they have Oilers ahead of the Flames, and all of the other Northwest teams ranked 14th or lower.

Hardly worth discussing as we were a top 8 team last year, and improved some what while many of the other top teams treaded water more or less.

if everybody respects our team as a good team and we win, we win
if everybody says we are a poor team and we win, we still win

i gain more enjoyment from watching good hockey games than i do having people say my team is good or bad and proving them right or wrong. i don't see hockey fandom as a competition.

i don't know why this is a difficult concept.

I'm confused. So the rakings last year were written by idiots but the same people who put you top 8 is this year, who are written by the same people, are finally giving you respect?

Speaking of preseason rankings,I was going through the player rankings for the Yahoo pool and was pretty surprised at where the big 3 for the Canucks ranked.

Luongo checks in at #36 behind Nabokov, Kiprusoff, Backstrom, Brodeur, Ward and Lundqvist. So according to yahoo Luongo isn't even a top 5 goalie.

Daniel is our best forward at #23 but inexplicably Henrik doesn't check in until #86!!

Our top ranked D is Bieksa at #136 which is actually fairly respectable.

Pool rankings aren't really a gauge on a player's skill, depending on how points are calculated. For instance, Kiprusoff is a #1 fantasy goalie because he plays so many games and racks up almost all the teams wins himself.

I guess if your pool only takes wins for goalies into consideration that would be true. His save% and GAA weren't even in the top 30, he only had 4 shutouts and most yahoo pools include those stats, so I still don't really get it. Luongo and Mason pretty much won my pool for me last year even with Luongo's injury. In fact, Kipper was trade bait all year for the guy who had him and he still couldn't unload him.

I actually get why Henrik was so low, there is a glut of great centers and much fewer high end LWers.

The Luongo thing is the only real "disrespect" that the rankings showed.

I care more about what I think of this team than what the "experts" think. Right now I think we'll repeat as NW Champs.
