PREVIEW The Kings will conclude their two-game, back-to-back road trip through Kansas City and Colorado Wednesday night, playing the Colorado Avalanche.
The Kings (3-1-1) defeated the Islanders, 4-2 in a fight-filled exhibition in Kansas City last night. Wayne Simmonds had two goals and Teddy Purcell and Drew Doughty also scored for the Kings in the win. Purcell has looked impressive so far this pre-season, scoring 2-2=4 in three games, while Simmonds leads the Kings with four goals in four games while collecting 12 PIMs and a team-high 10 shots on goal. Simmonds scored just nine goals in 82 games last season, his first in the NHL.
Interestingly, at the game in KC, Kings forward Kevin Westgarth and NY Islanders defenseman Brett Westgarth for 24 PIMs, but were under strict orders from their mother that fighting each other was not an option. Mother Gilda and father Reg, were both on hand for the contest.
Erik Ersberg will start and play all 60 minutes in net tonight trying to keep a lock down on the Kings No. 2 goaltender position. Ryan Smyth will not be playing in his return to Colorado with Teddy Purcell earning the promotion to the top line with Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams.
There will be a lot of players that are challenging for roster spots in tonight's game with Kyle Clifford, Brayden Schenn, Trevor Lewis, Rich Clune and Marc-Andre Cliche up front and Alec Martinez and Thomas Hickey on the back end.
First-year Avalanche coach Joe Sacco has guided the Avalanche to a 2-1-0 mark thus far in the pre-season, after defeating the Blues 2-1 at the Pepsi Center on Sunday. Colorado also lost at ST. Louis, 6-2 on Sept. 18 while dropping Dallas, 3-1 on Sept. 17.
"I’m approaching every preseason game like a regular season game, and that’s been our team attitude as well," Sacco told coloradoavalanche.com. "We have to get off to a good start this season. We can’t wait for October 1 to play hockey.
"Right now, we’re trying to be in regular season mode as far as our practices, our tempo, the pace of everything. We’re trying so that when October 1 rolls around we’re not sitting there watching and saying ‘Wow, the intensity level has picked up."
With its roster now down to 27 players, most of the Avalanche’s regulars - including Paul Stastny, Milan Hejduk and Wojtek Wolski - are expected to be in the lineup against the Kings. Also likely to play are rookies Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly, the latter of which signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Avalanche on Monday.
Former King Tom Preissing will not play, after having a scope done on his right knee and will miss 4-6 weeks. Kyle Quincey, who played with the Kings last year could see action as the Aves have just eight healthy defensemen on their preseason roster. Quincey came by and chatted with his former teammates at the Kings morning skate at the Pepsi Center.
The Avalanche acquired Preissing, along with defenseman Kyle Quincey, in a deal that sent Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings during the off-season,
Former King Adam Deadmarsh will also be on hand, as he is the Video/Development Coach for the Avalanche.

That's a pretty full Colorado lineup. Pretty much the lineup they'll roll on opening night. Good to see Clifford-Schenn against a real NHL team, even if it's the team that might have Taylor Hall on it next year.
Wait... nevermind, I just saw that it says "Roster" and not "lineup".

No need to apologize, you have done all of us a service. I'm very grateful and I'm sure everyone else is! Thank you for the great GDT.

Never a need to apologize. Your GDTs consistently are the cream of the crop. Many thanks.
Also, Lewis needs to step up.
Go Kings.
