Well, I guess the Oilers don't need to make a deal before the season starts, but they definitely should. There's a great opportunity to deal from a position of strength to fill a hole, particularly defensively-responsible veteran forwards.
There is no way that Comrie will wear number 89. Don't even let them hacks paper writers let you think that. It doesn't make any sense. Sam we know you are the future of the franchise but we did bring Mike back for one year and as you know he wore 89 here before you and we would really appreciate it if you would give him 89 just for this season.
If the Oilers want to not sign Gagner beyond this season, giving Comrie number 89 would be a good start.
I guess I should be careful what I wish for. I've been wanting the Oilers to adress their depth (or lack there of) at center for a while now, but Comrie isn't exactly what I had in mind. True, he's probably a better player than most of our current centers, so in that way, the team is improved (if only slightly), but I would've been a lot happier with someone like a Malhotra or Bonk.
Gagner shouldn't give up his number, even though I've never been a big fan of him wearing 89 to begin with.
This part of the end of Garrioch's article was kind of interesting. (Disclaimer: it's Garrioch.)

Sun Media has confirmed the Sharks have tried to get several teams -- including the Kings, Habs and Oilers -- involved in a three-way deal because the Senators have refused to accept Sharks winger Jonathan Cheechoo as part of a trade.

They wouldn't do that anyway. If Comrie ends up wearing 89, it'll be because Gagner gave it up, not because the team assigned it to him.
I'm fairly certain Comrie will wear #39 as Doug Weight was his favorite player growing up. I seem to recall that he would've taken #39 but Doug Weight already had dibs on that one...
89 was given to him when he started as it most closely resembled 39 (that's how I remember it).
It wouldn't be fair to Gagner to change his number now considering he's our 'franchise' guy.

Part of that pressure that Comrie had to deal with the first time around was that everyone wanted him to be Doug Weight. I'd be very surprised if he took 39 now, but then again I was surprised when Gagner got 89. Still, the Oilers haven't let anyone else wear 39 since Weight left.

Havn't let or just nobody has cared to wear 39?
It's not like the guy is going to the rafters. Sure he is the last 100+ point player in franchise history. But lets get realistic, we're not gonna see Douggie up there with the likes of Gretz et al.
The way Laforge was pimping the lack of tax revenue coming from those locations was interesting.
