Avs Rookie Camp/Training Camp updates

Just thought we should probably have a thread where people can post their observations if they go and attend one of these practices.

AD has some great videos up on his blog. Good to hear Galiardi has bulked up to almost 200 pounds. That should help his chances. He also mentions Stoa looking really good which is nice to hear.

I'm most excited to see Duchene's debut... Even more than I was for Wolski.

Last year we were just another team. Now we have nothing to lose AND we get to see close to a dozen young NHLers try to make it.

Are the training camp practices open to the public? I'll be in Denver Sunday so might be interested in going to their first practice.

Yes. I'd get there early with the first practice being on a weekend, they'll likely get a good crowd.

There was camp yesterday and today both in similar fashion. Started with rookies drilling with coaches - ended with scrimmage with rookies and vets mixed on both sides.

Quick notes: On some players both vets and rookies.

Vets:
-I hate to say it but Tucker's knee looks heeled and he looked great both days.
-Wolski looked incredible perhaps the best player for 2 days.
-Stats was great Today - ok yesterday.
-Hensick looked to be the fasted player - even faster than Duchene - just couldn't score.
-Anderson looked good, Buduj got lit up, Weiman looked the best (grey team owes him beers after that scrimmage).
-Stewart was solid, Svatos looked great.

Rookies:
-Duchene is simply a young start waiting to happen. Super fast, great with stick, great shot. But needs to adjust his game just as Stamkos did last year in TB. Basically make simplier plays.
-Stoa has the perfect game for the NHL, drives plays percentages, good on both sides of the ice.
-Ryan O'reilly is exceptionally strong, simple player, very smart had good scrimmages needs to be more agressive.
-Stefan Ellis - wow very impressed with vision, great skater he's someone to watch.
-David Marshall - can't believe how good he looked really played well got dirty skated great.
-TJ Galiardi - very nice camp solid all the way, hope he can score everything else looks ready.
-Kelsey Tessier - great skill just doesn't translate during the game
-Cameron Gaunce - I don't see what others see - 6th -7th defensemen at best in NHL
-Tyson Barrie - turned the puck over the most dumb mistakes good skills he is a LONG way away.
-Dupuis - made some great goals for the grey team needs to be more consistant

Great to see all the players out I know most of thought it would be just rookies. Scrimmages were great going back and forth between rinks - NO coaches!! just the vets running things!!

Yeah, I really appreciate hearing from the fans that get to see the practices as well. Thanks a lot.

Those of us that can't go appreciate everything that those that can go do for us. (Did that make sense?) Anywhooo I am really happy to hear about Stoa. Its nice to see someone in his position with the injury able to come back and really knock the teams socks off. Not only am I an Avs fan and hope to see him this year. I have him in 2 fantasy leagues and cant wait to see him log some nice minutes as our top power forward.

Not sure what to make of Aaron but I found this posted on his blog at Hockeybuzz...
Matt Duchene told me today that he feels like he's close to being NHL ready.

"I'm sure there will be an adjustment stage but I think I'm close" Duchene said.

From the stands, it does look like he's ready to go. He's got a wicked shot (he broke Trevor Cann's collar bone today), great speed and thinks the game at the NHL level. He looks to be ready but Training Camp will really start to show how close he is.
Yikes!

and it was just a wrist shot. It was crazy. I saw some of it today and it looked like he might have hit him in the throat, but damn he broke the collar bone.

maybe he's trying to make sure he makes the roster by taking out the competition....

I meant mine as a joke. Like he was taking out other players just so there would be place for him, but obviously a goalie would make no sense to hurt for a spot....?

Just my failed attempt at humor. I'll stop I guess

So Canns out with a broken collarbone? That bites. I was looking forward to seeing what he did this year. Wonder how long that normally keeps someone out....

Ah, I meant it as "yea, he's taking out the competition for goalies on our team". The joke obviously being there is none.

Yea, I'll stop too.
