Schremp looking forward to clean slate with Edmonton

A new regime is in place in Edmonton, but will it be the same story for Rob Schremp?

There's candid and then there's stream of consciousness.

Also, most reporters take out the language that lots of players use every day - it's startling to see word for word quotes. I take it the writer wasn't too impressed by Rob's openness and honesty.

The only thing these interviews have proven to me is that Rob Schremp is done as a prospect. He has no interest in bettering his game, and quite frankly, he's completely useless until he does.

Just go to Europe

No, actually I'm looking forward to seeing Schremp at camp, this is probably it for him.

Erm...

"I've gotten harder, more focused on my off-ice," he said. "You work out and everybody does the same ****. It's not like I'm doing anything different than any other hockey player, but there's more things you can do, like dieting and protein shakes, and all that kind of ****. Working out with Sammy Gagner at that gym [Dave Gagner's gym in London, ON] has really helped me a lot. I feel great on the ice, I feel great off the ice. You know, last year I went out and saw Chad Morrow and I got all the weightlifting down, but I didn't have a good diet. I came in to camp... [pausing] I wasn't fat at camp [pause]. I didn't come in... I didn't get the best results that I could if I had been on track with everything. This time I knew I had to buckle down.

"My first contract's up -- I don't have any safety net, right? It's do or die this year. I had to buckle down, work extra hard this summer, and I got my passion back, the drive. I want to be in the NHL. I'm sick of being sent down on October 3rd and being an AHLer, hoping to get called back up."

So the Oilers should evaluate players based on press interviews now?

Actually, you're waaaayyy off base. I wish every interview was this open and candid. For background, after I discussed this with my editor, we decided to quote as is. It's important to the story to understand the way Rob is.

Personally, I love the guy. He's genuine, he's honest -- perhaps a bit myopic, but he's sure of himself. Watering down his quotes (and trust me.. there were a lot more curse words throughout) doesn't give an accurate reflection of who he is.

Ask yourself. If you read these quotes without the swearing, you would say he's like most other people. Maybe a little more forthright, but no more or less passionate. By using his actual language, we hope it conveys his true personality.

Rob's Rob. Love him or hate him. I find him engaging, entertaining, and refreshingly honest. I've done hundreds of interviews with guys that sound like they're reading from a script (or that sound like they count by using their feet...) I'll take Rob each and every day.

Wouldn't surprise me now based on how they performed these years and the whole concept of "character individual"

As long as you talk nicey nicey on the camera, we love you

It's nice to see that this first round choice will finally get a chance to earn that pick. It is a shame so many people love throwing picks into the garbage.

I really hope he impresses at the camp and does come in with a 'clean slate'. He could be a fantastic player in the NHL, he just isn't there yet.

Maybe Quinn can do something with him.

Love the article. Love the idea that Schremp won't be passed over for call-ups this year. Hoping for a very upbeat training camp, with players who can play unafraid for the first time in a long time.

I think we need a dedicated Schremp thread. He makes for great conversation, let's have at 'er.

over/under on 10 NHL games played this year?

With the inevitability of injuries coupled with a strong camp (I'm speculating here, of course), I think 15-20 is very possible.

I can smell TC is just around the corner. Willis has a Schremp article, Lowetide has a Schremp article, and there are two threads here with Schremp in the title.

Yup. Could be a frost later in the week. Hockey season is definitely getting close.

so, that's why it smells like un-clean jock straps and desperation?

Seriously though, can't wait for camp. Rookie camp is what, a week and a half away?

Au contraire!

I think he was impressed by it and that is why it was left as it was.

That's nice and all, but it's really meaningless. This isn't Sam Gagner needing to get stronger or Penner needing to get fit.

Rob Schremp's junior game, the one he's so publicly insistent on playing, will not work for him in the NHL.

There is one thing that always grabs my attention. Even on this site--there are hardly any Schremp to another team rumours. Even after he was drafted--other teams have shown very little interest in him. I would love to have him prove me and the rest if the world wrong--but I think his greatest problem is himself.

About a year ago Doug Maclean was talking about things that his team and other teams put their players through and MAclean used Schremp and one of his own players as examples. He was very high on this one pick and wanted to get him as soon as possible, his scouts loved him--but the shrink hired to give him a test said you were wasting your time--he did not have the mentle fitness for the game and you would be wasting the pick. Maclean ignored the guy and took the player in the second round and the guy never got near to the nhl. The shrink was saying how the player's attitude was his biggest problem--even though he had all the skill--his head was off. Maclean said that Schremp's psych exame was reportedly worse

I think the reporter wasnt overly impressed with Schremp attitude because basically he is in a denial episode.

also this quote at the beginning gives a good guess

"Slightly humbled, but only slightly, Schremp admits to a diminishing of confidence "

He didnt take much responsability over what happened and that's quite sad for him. Good luck Rob.

Yes obviously if we could get the author feedbacks on this interview, that would be much better then this guessing game.

Not that it means anything. Reporters are impressed by good quotes that make writing a story easy and entertaining. Not exactly the same criteria that impresses coaches and management.
