Battle of the Guitarists Part 2: Randy Rhoads vs Slash
Seeing how Slash is a little more highly regarded than I thought (Judging by the Slash vs Kirk Hammett poll), let's see how he does against a better competition.
VS
My take on this, if Slash wins this poll then his overrating level sure has taken a step much higher.
Randy was an innovator and could play so many styles. Slash is a great guitar player but more in the league of a Hammett......he is no where in the league of Randy Rhodes (RIP).
If Randy had one fault, it was his atrocious studio tone. Horribly shrill. Randy > Slash though.
I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer Jake E Lee to Randy. He just had a flare I liked. Though Blizzard of Ozz is without question Ozzy's best album (and arguably the best hard rock album of the 80s).
In my mind, it does. I enjoy his music more. I play a little guitar myself and it doesn't make any difference to me if Rhoads could hammer out barre chords faster, I prefer the music Slash makes. He's not as technically proficient, though.
If you want a real virtuoso battle, put any of these guys against Eddie Van Halen.
I think he's a bit overrated too. As a guitar player he isn't anything special in my mind. He's come up with some great riffs though and I think he excels more as a songwriter. I think this is what makes him superior to your "average pro" guitar player. I would compare him to Keith Richards more than anything. I think Slash's image has alot to do with it.
Mr. Brownstone still makes my pants tight, though.

Rhodes is still a better player. Eddie is excellent but overrated.

Slash is very very good. Rhodes is just one of those musicians that just makes your jaw hang open as you watch them. He is one of those timeless talents that will always be remembered. Slash not so much.

You can say Rhoads is a better player - if we're talking technically, I agree with you, but not everyone is going to agree, especially considering the guy's been dead for 27 years, which probably, if anything, overstates his accomplishments being that he only played on six albums throughout his career.
I don't see how a guy like EVH can be overrated. If anything, it's a shame that they haven't put out a full-length album in 10 years, though their last good one was probably the F.U.C.Knowledge in '91.
When elite talents, whether its music, sports or whatever are called "overrated" on messageboards it makes me cringe. You can call many players overrated (heck, I even said Slash was a bit overrated, perhaps hypocritically) but I don't think the best of the best are ever overrated.

I dont care if he is dead for 1000 years. Changes nothing. Eddie is not overrated. He arguably has the best technique of any rock guitarist. I would also put Satriani, Vai, Petrucci and Gilbert in that conversation.
