When was the last time we saw a team have 3 dmen of their calibre and would qualify for the canadian team. My guess is Stevens, Niedermayer, Rafalski.

Ponger/Neidermayer/Beauchemin was nothing to scoff at... And they won a Stanley Cup.

Bourque - Blake - Foote

---

What do you mean by "qualify for the Canadian team"? Like the Olympics? If so, Rafalski if from the USA.

Lidstrom, D. Markov and Chelios in the 2007 post-season. And that is pretty much the worst top 3 Detroit has had in some time -- so pretty much Lidstrom, anyone and anyone is better than Calgary's current top 3.

Rafalski is American

But yeah. A nice top 3, but not even the best top 3 in the NHL right now, much less "since whenever".

Weber, Suter, and Hamhuis. While Suter is going to play for team USA the other two are trying out for Team Canada.

The Flames don't even have the best trio going into next season.

Lidstrom, Rafalski, and Kronwall are better than Calgary's trio. Having a top 10 ALL TIME NHL defenseman is not something to overlook. Lidstrom has more Norris Trophies and Cups than Calgary's trio combined. Lest you say the past shouldn't affect next season...Lidstrom is still the same amazing defenseman that won those Norris Trophies. He was my second pick to win it last year after Chara.

They are likely better that way as possibly better on paper and in the minds of the rabid fans of the Calgary franchise than under the stark reality of the actual season.

As far as the question asked by the OP, there are literally three or four set of Dmen each year in the league, as good or better (much?) than these three. This past season alone has a bunch including Detroit's Lidstrom, Kronwall and Rafalski and other ones people don't automatically think about like:

Boston - Chara, Wideman, Montador
Nashville - Weber, Suter, Hamhuis
Chicago - Duncan, Seabrook, Keith (Campbell)
etc. etc.

Nice to see such enthusiasm for one's team though I guess.

etc....

It's called speculation. What reason is there to assume that any of those three will deteriorate from last year?

For Phaneuf's sake hopefully none or he might become a PP-only defenseman.
