Disgruntled Dany Heatley broke his summer-long silence Friday, saying that his request for a trade from Ottawa still stands. He also said the reason he nixed a potential trade to Edmonton earlier this summer was because he wants multiple options as to where he can continue his career and has never gotten that from the Senators.
"There's nothing with Edmonton personally, I just think when we asked for a trade we wanted to go about it together and we wanted some options and to this date there has only been one option," Heatley said during a conference call he conducted from his summer home in Kelowna, B.C. "At the time the only option was Edmonton and I wasn't ready to make a decision at that time -- and I'm still not ready to make a decision until there are other options."
I love Heatley's chutzpuh.
I want options dammit!!!!!

"It's definitely not Cory solely," Heatley said. "I think the main reason for me is when I signed in Ottawa two years ago, I thought it was to be an integral part of the team. Over the last two years, I feel my role has diminished -- and especially this past season it diminished a lot more. A diminished role is the biggest thing. I feel I'm a player who can play in a lot of different situations. I'm an offensive guy, but I take pride in all aspects of the game and I don't feel I was given that role on the team."
I guess this settles it. He is a two way forward and I know this because he said so.
If you traded Vanek for him maybe. But I would rather have Vanek.
The cost to get him combined with the impact of his 8mil salary the following two years (10/11 and 11/12) wouldn't be worth it.
But he scores goals and to some (not necessarily you) thats the end all and be all of a player.
I'm curious why you would want a player like him with the problems that would bring. The type of player I'm refering to is a one dimensional offensive winger and the problems are the issues caused by his contract.
His contract would probably be the major stopping point. $7.5 million is a lot to swallow.
He's still easily more talented than anyone currently on the Sabres. Vanek might get there, but he's not on Heatley's level yet (and no, I wouldn't include Vanek in a trade for Heatley). I suck at going through trade scenarios and cap figures and all that stuff, but I'd look through my options for getting him if I were a GM.

If Ottawa gets .60 cents on the dollar for Heatley after he destroyed their leverage not once but twice, they should jump at it. If they go into the season with this guy it's going to be a circus around that team and I don't see how such a fractured team could succeed. It's to the point where Murray should pull a basketball trade, trading for expiring contracts/useful players, even if they wouldn't come anywhere close to Heatley. Think something along the lines of Vermette/Modin/Klesla from Columbus (not exactly that deal, but something where they get useful players and can have some depth). Then they can use the cap space towards a very good player next summer and/or not be in cap hell if the salary cap plummets.
You'd have to be a retarded GM to want to take on Heatley at this point because the probability that he's going to pull this same **** on your team in a couple of seasons is pretty high. He's not that great of a player where he'd be worth the headache.
Heatley averaged 21:44 a night in 07/08 (2nd among Sens forwards)and led all Sens forwards in ES ice time with 16:48. After Clouston took over he was averaging roughly 18-19 minutes a night. That is a drop in ice time that he feels is unwarranted.
Vanek's role on the other hand has never diminished like that or at all. So I fail to see a parallel. Even factoring in his reduced ice time after his injury he still averaged slightly more ice time this past year than the previous two. He would have been around 18min a night had he not gotten injured.
His role was and is to score goals at ES and on the PP and his time in those areas stayed the same or went up a bit the last two years. He had a brief stretch on the PK where he filled in while Connolly, Goose and Hecht were out injured. Then came off the PK when they returned.
To be honest I don't recall much complaining from Vanek just his biggest fans.
I want options too. But my job's my job and I suck it up.
I hope they scratch him every game. Ottawa's not going to contend this year anyway and he'll be a cancer. so let him sit until he likes one of the options he's given.

Eh... he wants to play in different roles/situations, then I suggest a few shifts per night on the 4th line, that way he can prove to the world he can do something other than just .score. goals. [1]
