Detroit Red Wings Game Breakers:

Pavel Datsyuk: The Russian playmaker was recently rewarded with a seven-year, $46.9 million contract extension, a deal that was most likely engineered behind his regular-season play, versus what he’s done in the playoffs. Datsyuk led the Red Wings in scoring this season with 27 goals and 87 points and is one of the more dangerous attackers in the game. But in the playoffs, Datsyuk has not had that same kind of production with three goals in 42 career playoff games. He won a Cup in 2002 with the Wings, but if they are going to raise it again this spring, he’s going to have to find the net more than he ever has.

Nicklas Lidstrom: The rock the Red Wings lean on, especially in the playoffs. So far, the 36-year old has won three Cups in Detroit and he’s not showing any signs of slowing down. This season Lidstrom averaged a team-high 27:29 of ice per night, played in every phase of the game and scored 62 points, third on the team. In the playoffs, he’s always been just as effective, scoring 118 points in 174 career playoff games, all while mostly being matched against the opposition’s most dangerous forwards.

Dominik Hasek: The last time “The Dominator” played in the playoffs, he walked off with the Stanley Cup, backstopping the Red Wings to their last championship in 2002. This spring, Hasek returns to the tournament and he returns wearing the uniform of the only team he ever won it all with. Hasek has a 53-39 record in 97 playoff games and will be a finalist for the Vezina this year as one of the elite goalies in the game. His 2.05 goals-against were second in the league. Not bad for a 42-year-old.

Calgary Flames Game Breakers:

Jarome Iginla: Any discussion of the Flames begins and ends with Iginla. He is coming off a strong regular season and the whole atmosphere of the playoffs fits him perfectly. A prototypical power forward, Iginla can take a hit, a punch or just about anything else and still make the play.

Kristian Huselius: The Swede's cover is blown for good now. Previously a productive but quiet – very, very quiet – winger with the Florida Panthers and Flames, Huselius enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2006-07 with 34 goals and 43 assists. No more runs under the radar for him.

Daymond Langkow: The speedy, hard-nosed center is coming off a career season that saw him surpass the 30-goal mark and the 40-assist plateau. After NHL stops with Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Phoenix, Langkow has been a perfect fit in Calgary.

X Factors:

Todd Bertuzzi: This is the reason why the Red Wings rolled the dice and traded for him at the deadline. He can be the force that gets Detroit over the top this year. The only question is, “Can he do it?” Bertuzzi only played in eight games with the Wings after missing most of the year with a back injury before the trade deadline. When healthy, Bertuzzi is the elite power forward in the game, a player capable of dominating a series. In 24 career playoff games, Bert has six goals and 14 points.

Craig Conroy: Rescued from a sour season in Los Angeles, Conroy is back in Calgary, where he was an important player during Calgary's run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. Since returning to the Flames in deal with the Kings, Conroy has looked like his old self again, meaning the Flames have another solid playmaker.

Five Fast Facts:
1. Old Man Hockey:
Chris Chelios is the oldest defenseman to ever play in the playoffs at 45. The oldest player to ever dress in the postseason is Gordie Howe, who played in the playoffs as a 52-year-old. In 23 seasons, Chelios has played in 228 playoff games and won Stanley Cups with Montreal in 1986 and Detroit in 2002.

2. Sixteen and counting:
The Red Wings have qualified for the playoffs 16-straight years and has accumulated over 100 points in the regular season for seven-consecutive seasons. Detroit finished with the best record in the Western Conference this year, fended off the Nashville Predators for the Central Division crown, and amassed 113 points.

3. Marathon Man:
During the regular season, sophomore defenseman Dion Phaneuf led all Flames players in ice time, averaging over 25 minutes per game.

4. Trade A Plus:
Brad Stuart went from being a minus-22 player with the Boston Bruins to a plus-12 player with the Flames.

5. Home not so sweet:
The Calgary Flames, who advanced to Game 7 of the 2004 Cup Final, own the record for the most home losses in one playoff year with seven defeats that spring. The Flames dropped two games in the first round to Vancouver on home ice, one to Detroit in the second round, and two more each in the third and fourth rounds to San Jose and Tampa.

Crystal Ball:
Detroit will win if:
Hasek plays like he always has in the playoffs. If Hasek can outplay Kiprusoff, the Flames have no chance. But the Wings are also going to have to find a way to crack Calgary’s stingy defense, and the only way they win this series is if the Detroit attackers like Datsyuk, Holmstrom and Bertuzzi can operate around the Flames’ net. Look for Lidstrom to be matched against Calgary’s big guns like Jarome Iginla, a match up that dramatically favors the Red Wings.

Calgary will win if:
Miikka Kiprusoff once again rises to the occasion in the Flames' net. The Calgary defense will play a key role here as they need to keep Detroit's physical forwards away from the front of the net in order to give "Kipper" a chance at seeing shots.Up front, the Flames need to make their shots count. Dominik Hasek has a reputation of being hard to beat once he gets rolling in a game, so striking early and often will be important for Calgary. Jarome Iginla will be in Detroit's sights, so it will be important for Alex Tanguay and Daymond Langkow to strike at every possible opportunity.

Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen will join Robert Lang on the No. 2 line, while Kyle Calder and Mikael Samuelsson will replace them on the fourth line, centered by Valtteri Filppula.Flames coach Jim Playfair said defenseman Robyn Regehr (knee) won’t play tonight.

The Wings stay out of the box, they win tonight. I think it's really as simple as that. They are simply better than Calgary 5v5 and, with their superior depth, I think they are wearing the Flames down on their blueline.

Go Wings

After watching game 3, I am pretty confident that we can win this one, which would be really hughe. I did not expect to sweep the series, but if we can steal game 4, we could wrap up the series at home.

Go Wings!!!

Go Wings
I do not think the Wings can stay out of the box. They will be called for at least 1 phantom call and 1-2 weak calls. That is the way they will call the game. Kiprosoff dives big time, he dives a lot.
What I think is the Wings have to play better, they have to be better on PK and PP. The Wings have scored 1 PP goal (not countint 5 on 3) while the Flames have scored 4 PP goals. That is the key. The Wings almost won game 3. I do not think the Flames outplayed the Wings, but the Wings made 2 huge mistakes and lost the game. Strangly enough in both goal were involved the Wings players which should not be involved in big mistakes, namely Lidstrom and Z. If you watch the GWG you'll see that Filppula makes a perfect pass to Z and Z misses the pass as he did Lidstrom's pass on PK and the Flames go the other way, then Lidstrom makes a huge mistake and that was the game.

Here is what Babcock has to do.

He has to get Hudler back in the lineup. How? Either Bertuzzi or Samuelsson, I say Bertuzzi should sit, but I am fine if Babcock decided to sit Samuelsson. He could also sit Calder and play Bertuzzi with Lang and Samuelsson. Wings' PP is terrible and I think Hudler would help. I aslo think the line of Hudler, Filppula and Franzan worked well.
The players which have to step up:
Z-no points, 2 PIM. His best game was game 1. He should go after Iginla and get him off of his game. Iginla is in a strange way after Z, so Z has the best chance to get him lose his composure, not that it should take much.
Calder-no points, 4 PIM. That call, interference on Kiprusoff was BS. But I have already said that Kipper dives a lot. He is on the 2nd line and gets PP so he has to produce.
Samuelsson-no points, 4 PIM. Another player without points. He aslo gets PP time, but nothing to show for it.
Bertuzzi-no points. 1 game or not, injury or not. He wanted to play, then he has to play and produce or sit.
Lang- 1 assist on 5 on 3. This line has to wake up. He had some great games this season. He and Cleary were playing great at some point of the season. When Calder came, they immediately were producing together. Babcock has to find the way to get this line going.
Holmstrom-1 point, 4 PIM. He was fantastic in game 1 when Z was great and was flying all over the ice, but since then they both went quiet. They are on our 1st line and they have to help Datsyuk offensively.
Lidstrom. Obviously he is our best player and he can't make mistakes as he did last game.

Game plan.
In the beginning of the game the best skaters should go out there and get all over the Flames. Get their fans out of the game and make the Flames lose their composure. Z has to follow Iginla and irritates him. Iginla will lose his cool quickly. Our forwards have to hunt Phaneuf, if they put the pressure on him he is going to make many mistakes and make many of them throughout the game.
We are better 5 on 5, we just have to get our PP and PK going. Wings' PK was one of the best in the league. The Wings should also play a little bit dirty. The Flames are doing it all the time, they are cheating in every way. Babcock has to get involved and argue with refs. Those calls from game 3 are not the home calls, those were "handing the game" calls.

This is in a way game 7 for both teams. The Wings win and we are close to round 2. The Flames win and it is a new series.

Go Wings!

They definitely need to win this game, and stay out of the box. There's no way Calgary is that undisciplined, and the Wings are better than them 5 on 5. Win the game tonight and go back to the Joe with confidence to wrap this thing up.

Let's go Red Wings.

Red Wings will be down 2-0 with 30 minutes left and Datsyuk will get the neutral hat-trick to turn it arround. Then Zetterberg will score in the empty net.

4-2 Wings

GO WINGS!!!

There I said it. I want the Wings to return to Detroit up 3-1 in the series and hopefully finish it off next game. Game 3 was close. Even with the Flames playing the best they have in the series, the Wings kept it close for most of the game and the Flames have still only scored one even strength goal in the series.

Stay out of the penalty box and get back to Game 2 and 3 form. I also like how our 3rd line played in Game 3. Our "4th line" was good in the first two (though it's now been changed). Those are the lines that will win and lose games and our 3rd and 4th lines have been pretty solid

It shouldn't take much tweaking and we should be able to take Game 4.

Somehow I doubt the Flames would view a hattrick that cost them a game as neutral.

I didn't see the last game. So wich line is the 3rd line?

I too believe that Hoodie should be back...who to sit? I'd say Lang, but fat chance of that happening, so my second choice would be Sammy. Either way, I think we missed Hoodie's energy out there.

Now that the guys have had a couple days to adjust their bodies and biological time clocks to Calgary, let's go in there and beat the living crap out of them. I want to see us finish them off Saturday.

They also have a little extra gift when they come back...

Believe...there is no obstacle that enough hard work, determination, and faith cannot overcome.

GO WINGS!!!!!!

I only listened to the game, but I figured that Maltby, Draper and Cleary were the 3rd line based on their role.

The wings need to come over hitting the Flames. I notice the big diffrence is the Wings hitting first. and the Flamers are use to giving the hits so it has them back on their heals.

Yeah right... bench the one guy on that line who goes into the corners, actually wins puck battles, and goes to the front of the net, in but leave the two black holes he's been playing with not only in the lineup but together as the second line? Lunacy.

What I don't understand is the ice time they continue to get. We're rolling four lines and they've been demonstrably the worst in every game, yet continue to get top six minutes. That's crap. Babs, I mostly love the job you're doing but until accountability exists for the rest of the team and not just the rookies, all this talk about it amounts to so much hot air.

Don't bench Calder, for cryin' out loud. You want someone who's not afraid to go mucking in the corners, and it's certain that Calder isn't afraid to. If you are going to bench anyone, either Sammy or Lang. Get Hoodie back in the game.

Datsyuk played pretty well in game 3, but they seemed to shut him down more. I'd look for him to hopefully have a great game and answer them back. I think the Wings could take this 2-1...the score they shoulda had in game 3

hey kinda OT- but what is the athmosphere like in detroit during playoffs? is the city excited or they simply dont care? because with the type of team you guys have, you should be selling out the arena every game.
