Simple fact is that he is not being traded and he is worth more than anyone is willing to play. Value is irrelevant because it is severely inflated by the fact that the team doesn't want to trade him and has staked so much in the kid. Doughty is devoted to the franchise and it was his favorite team growing up and obviously still is. You just don't trade players like that. He will likely be a King for over a decade to come... The franchise isn't letting him go.
He is no where near the star power or player Crosby is now, but trading him would mean the same to the Pens organization and marketing label as trading Doughty would be to LA. Obviously if the Pens had to choose between Malkin and Crosby it would be Malkin going for that very reason.
Both Doughty and Kopitar are the poster children of the franchise. You don't trade one for no reason and their actual value holds little relevance whatsoever. If we were talking actual value then anyone in the league is attainable for a reasonable price and that just isn't the case. Actual value doesn't exist for these types of players.

LA Kings response on drafting Brayden Schenn:
"That was the main reason we took him, knowing that it would totally piss off Burkie. It was worth it." -Dean Lombardi
People were making the Bourque comparisons before he was drafted. But I would not expect someone like you to be aware of that fact.
No, you're right. It's entirely appropriate to compare a guy on a hot streak with less than 100 games to his name and 41 career points to an NHL legend and HHOF who had over 1500 points, a Calder, 5 Norris Trophys, a Stanley Cup and a smidgen shy of a PPG in a two decade NHL career - one of the greatest blueliners ever to play the game...
Get a grip. The kid is a fantastic hockey player - I didn't even vaguely deny that but to make anything more than a fleeting reference to Bourque's achievements right now is, well. I guess you already know much more about hockey than I do so no need for me to finish.

Dude....what part of "he was compared to Bourque BEFORE HE WAS DRAFTED" did you not understand? Of course no player in his first 100 games can match the accomplishments of a hall of fame player....but they can still have very similar talent and ability.....thus the comparison.
Speaking of ELC the Kings need to get him an extension before he can receive offer sheets, that way we can get him at a reasonable rate. Instead of a 7yr $63M Deal.
Well, he was supposed to be a Kings fan when he was growing up, right? Hopefully he gives us a hometown/fan discount.
When the Kings got Doughty I heard he was the most NHL ready, but that scouts didn't think he would get much better. Last year he proved he was NHL ready, This year he is getting better.
IF the Kings were to trade him, it would have to fix several problems and make the Kings ready for a cup run. Otherwise Doughty is worth more than any team would be willing to pay, from an on ice, team chemistry, and fan love points of view.
Doughty is great offensively and great defensively, and could be brilliant. He has at least one or two real brain farts a night, which are depressing of course.
If Doughty was a FA Dman, and all other Dmen were in FA as well, I'd say Doughty would get a long term 5.5 million dollar cap hit contract. He's great, yes, but, he really doesn't seem to have the package together yet.

Really? Ive watched every game this season and while Doughty still can make a mistake here and there(what defensemen doesnt?) your comment is simply incorrect and ill informed.
At this point, Doughty is by far the best young defensemen dating back to last year as an 18 year in the NHL. He is better at 19 then Rob Blake was at 21. Mike Green was 22 when he had his breakout season with 56 pts. Doughty at 19 is on pace for a 70 pt season all the while being rock solid defensively and having 2 of the top 10 hits of the week recently.
Doughtys only fault comes from the fact that he plays on the Kings....if he were on the Leafs or any eastern team for that matter he would be getting the props he deserves.

Your analysis isn't bad in terms of estimating value as a player today. But I bet if the starting bid for his services was 5.5 million, all 30 teams would be lined up to pay it due to his insane potential and his obvious upward progression in development. That price would last like 1 second, if he was a total UFA. Not all 30 teams would pay that much more but all you need is two to tango.
A player's age, potential, positional rarity, positional necessity and development rate if he's young all factor in to real value...and this guy all of those in spades.
The team with Kopitar trades for a center in the stage of development Kopitar was in 2 years ago while giving up their best defenseman who will be in the top 5 of the league eventually. That's great.
You could even go further to point out that along with Kopitar we'll have Schenn and Loktionov soon, making this trade even more stupid.
