I guess this is a problem throughout hockey this year (so far)...I just read that there was a record low crowd of 11,012 at Pepsi Center last night.
I can't agree with you on this one. 15 of the top 16 teams are at 95% attendance or better. 17 of the top 18 teams are at 90% or better. And on the other side 5 of 30 teams are at 80% or worse.

You are correct...I phrased that wrong. I'm just wondering aloud what affect this economy will ultimately have on NHL attendance figures as the season moves along.

OKAY now I see your point. I hope overall the NHL does good. The NHL should be OKAY.
Winnipeg can't afford an NHL team no matter how much anyone hopes they "deserve" one. They have an AHL team and that is what they'll have for a very long time.
how much do you earn per year? i top $100k every year. and i'm a lowly construction worker. this province actually has a MINIMUM wage of $29/per hour for electricians.and the average house costs about $150K.
there's plenty of money here.
No....When you love something, when its your passion, you always love it and follow your team, which is why I call American, bandwaggoner and casual hockey fan. Thats why I want a team in Quebec City.
Oh and don't tell me its normal that the fans won't show up for the games because their roster is bad or bla bla bla.
Search the roster of the Habs between 1996 and 2004 and it was pathetic, yet, people were there night in night out, and my passion for the Habs was always there, I was watching the game even if we had some of the worst roster in our history.
Has much I love hating on the Leafs, looks at their fan, no playoffs hockey since the lockout, still sold out every night and their fans still watch the game and they have other pro sports (NBA, MLB, MSL, CFL) yet still sold out.
I proved my point.
Hockey isn't very popular in the state, so doesn't matter if you guys are 300,000,000 in the country.
There are over 1 billion in China, so because of that they can help the sport to grow?
Somes market in the U.S are very good, some region where people loves hockey but very few of them have hockey for #1 sports in their heart and it will hurts these market's attendance forever.
Like I said, bring hockey back in Canada, where people LOVES it, watch it, and go to the game.
There's nowhere in the entire US that hockey is even close to #1 and I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head in the US that hockey is bigger than baseball. That will never change, imo.
As far as playing the sport and not just viewing, I don't know for sure but I would be shocked if hockey was anywhere near the top 10 in the US.
Not a whole lot of NHLers out of New York or Philadelphia or Chicago either.
NY has a hall of famer. joe mullen.
250 goal scorer brian mullen
mattieu schneider
if you move to the suburbs, komiserik, chris higgins, scuderi
they have their fair share.

Brett Hull played for the US in WC and the Olympics.

JVR and Tangradi are from the Philadelphia region.

Hockey is definitely way bigger than baseball in Buffalo (and only a little behind football).
As for the Habsfan calling all American hockey fans bandwagoners, I have a few suggestions for where he can go shove it. There are plenty of American hockey fans that are as diehard and passionate as any Canadian.

How far in the suburbs do you have to go in order for Brett Hull to be from "New York or Philadelphia or Chicago"?

Exactly. They have been there long enough to see if the sports is growing or not.
The Los Angeles Kings are in the NHL since the 70's and I don't see a lot of Californian born player in the NHL.
Enough is enough.
USA isn't the answer to "develop and grow" the sports.
Its due to a lack of interest. In general Americans don't care about hockey.
The attendance is showing it, the lack of US-born player from the South is another example that the sport isn't really growing at all in the South. Most of the fan are bandwaggoner, (can't believe Colorado draw only 11K fans, wow).
Your post is both ignorant and self serving. How to you explain away NHL success in non-traditional markets like Dallas, San Jose and Anaheim?
As far as "growing hockey players" goes you should pay more attention. Go look at the US National Development Team. One of the big stories there is the increasing number of players from California, Texas, Washington DC and other non-traditional markets are making their way into the US national program.
"It may be hard to believe, but California (20) and Maryland (10) have combined to produce more college players than North Dakota (15) and Maine (11). Arizona, Georgia and Texas each have four players in college hockey, with more committed for next season. While Massachusetts, Michigan and Minnesota natives still make up over 32 percent of the players in the game, 35 of the 50 states are represented in the college game"
It's time for us to admit that the game we love, hockey, is like cricket in many ways. It is a regional game with regional interest. Some people just don't like hockey. That's fine. But it's time to stop forcing the game on people who obviously aren't interested.
Except that people who love "cricket" are moving and their sport should go where they are moving to. The 2010 US Census will show 1 million Yankee born live in places like Anaheim, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC. Half a million Yankee born in Tampa and Miami. Those are long term trends that show no sign of reversing.
