bobby ryan deserves serious consideration. he is playing at a PPG page with an even split of goals and assists.

Every player in Boston has his part in the success of that squad. to say that Wheeler is "surrounded" by talent would be wrong, he is one of many pieces that is helping Boston this year.

Talking about +/- it's worth mentioning that Berglund leads St Louis with +14 with the second player being +6 and only 6 players being over 0.

Wow. This thread has been an all out mess from the beginning.

Anyways, here's my opinion...

1) Steve Mason:
Without this guy, the Jackets are in the basement of the West. It's that simple. He's also in contention for the Vezina and Hart. He keeps his play up, no ones beating this guy for the Calder.

2) Bobby Ryan He's been playing at a PPG pace all year. Has done wonders with the Ducks. He's a serious contender.

2) Kris Versteeg: I place him at the same level as Ryan. Has been solid all year, and has come out of no where to compete this year. He is easily a contender for the Calder.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After those top three....in no particular order:

Alex Goligoski: Guy gets no credit on HF. I'll probably be blasted for this, but I don't care. Gonchar and Whitney were gone, and this guy stepped up big time. Is a strong offensive d - man and is getting better every day at the defensive side. I think he's easily a contender.

Patrick Berglund: Has played awesome this year and without him the Blues would be in the Tavares sweepstakes. What else can I say? He's on pace for 50/60 points.

Blake Wheeler: Everyone loves to say that Wheeler is a product of a great team, but if you actually watch the Bruins this is not true. Wheeler has become one of the best Bruin forwards, and he has made his own way in the NHL. One of my favorite players to watch.

Drew Doughty: Great year for a 19 year old, but won't win the Calder. I have nothing against Doughty, and think he is easily a future #1 d-man, he is simply not good enough this year to win.

Those are my thoughts.

As far as Wheelers +/- being impressive if he were on any other team besides Boston chances are his +/- is nowhere near that. Hes an great young player but being surrounded by the talent in Boston is alot different than if he stayed in Phoenix.

And why does Wheeler get lauded for performing with an All Star cast around him but Doughty gets penalized for being on a team that everyone picked to be near the bottom of the league? Hes been a big part in the resurgence of that defence at 19 years old.
Did you actually read what I said or did you just skim it?

You can't spell CALDER without C-A-L as in Cal "Buttercup" Clutterbuck!!!!

Who cares about points - he leads the league in hits! (yes..I know... he fights with a visor - though the only time he has fought a guy who didn't have a visor was when he was attacked and did not start the fight)

Versteeg scored a short handed goal and had an assist tonight!

Versteeg now has 15 goals and 25 assists and his 40pts leads all rookies

And, that was his second shortie on this road trip. Versteeg has FOUR shorties this year. That's quite a stunning stat.
