hypothetically speaking,
say if sundin signs with the rangers, for oh 9 mil? then they need to shed some of their salary to afford him. they would be probably looking to unload gomez instead of drury because of the intangibles that drury brings and he makes less than gomez. gomez has an ntc i believe, but vancouver has ties to him, so it's not terribly unlikely that he wouldn't waive it to come here.
now here comes the twist,
with all those rumours of gionta coming to vancouver, i think this would be the best scenario. gomez is 28 and is still in his prime, and gionta also. gomez: will get you 60-80pts guaranteed

a line of demitra-gomez-gionta
definitely solves our scoring woes, while they can play a defensive-oriented game at the same time.
now, it's just a matter of what the rangers want....
No, just no. Not gonna happen. And we already have a Gomez.
why not? it makes perfect sense, it fits the every criteria that MG wants, speed, skill, not size, toughness (will go in the dirty areas to put the puck in the net),
but it's his contract that is the big no-no, other than that i don't see why MG would not consider this option

Our top 6 is already littered with playmakers, we'd have Gomez, Henrik, Daniel and Demitra who all look to pass first. Add Gionta and Bernier, and you have a really, really soft top 6 with only a couple players who look to score. Bernier brings some grit and toughness, Gomez brings a bit, but the rest are marshmellows.
Gomez will cost big assets to get and then the salary is terrible and impacts our ability to re-sign Luongo. It'll be the same scenario as Brad Richards.
I would love to see Gomez in Vancouver but I don't see why the Rangers would have interest in this. Hypothetically, they get Sundin for a year or 2 and dispose of a centerman in Gomez who they signed last offseason and is locked up for I think 5 more years to fit Sundin the cap? ... makes no sense to me.
From a Canuck fan POV I would move just about anyone on our roster outside Luongo to get Gomez though - love him as a player.

Well to be fair - Daniel is a solid goal scorer (who will look to pass....to his brother).
Also, you have to include Mason Raymond - who is a playmaking winger as well; Basic premise of your argument is correct though - team need guys who will shoot the puck and often.

Both Sedins are playmakers first, really, imo. Daniel will look to pass to his brother or any scorer on his line first (ala Carter). They are like 2 centres a lot of the time.
But I agree, Daniel IS a solid goal scorer, but I wouldn't say he's a pure sniper at all.

Do you even know anything about Gionta? I wouldn't call Gionta and Bernier really, really soft players.
According to IB Gomez has to give the Rangers a list of 3 teams he wont accept a trade to and it's pretty unlikely that Vancouver is one of those 3 teams.

yeah its probably atlanta, florida, and nashville.
I worded it poorly, as I meant Bernier would be the exception. Gionta doesn't bring much. Sure, he's feisty. Cute.
Gionta is feisty but he isn't soft by anymeans. Are you suggesting we get guys like Bertuzzi in his prime? Because every team wants a player like that, but unfortunately there are fewer of those players who exist.

Gionta is not soft.
I'm suggesting we'll need more guys like Bernier to compensate if we're going to assemble a soft and/or diminutive top 6.
