So if they traded him in year 5 the team taking him would take a cap hit of 4.5 but only have to pay him 3.3?
Thanks
That's pretty much correct. His Cap hit won't change from $4.5M but by front-loading his contract they not only assure more lazy play early on, but make him more tradable later. That's exactly why they did it this way instead of the reverse, because no one is going to want a 35 year old Malone making $5-6M a year. Instead he'll be making $3M a year roughly, which is what he should be making now to begin with, if there was a shred of sanity left in the world of sports.
I appreciate you underacheiving your entire career in Pittsburgh until you were lucky enough to play with Geno in your contract year. Between you and Orpik, you will make the two most overpaid & underacheiving players that the respective GMs will be kicking themselves for in a year or so.
$15 million in the first two years? What a joke....
Good luck squeezing the kind of offense that will come close to justifying that kind of scratch. Melrose is going to have to summon the power of the mullet to pull off that kind of miracle.
Hats off to a smart agent for cashing in on the only good season that this guy will ever have.
Be sure to bring your sunblock and enjoy all of that gorgeous snatch in FLA.
agree with both of these... he isnt the kind of guy that should make everyone jump with joy when they sign him... we wanted this guy gone for so long.. he was almost unbearable to watch at some times
no way was shero giving him that kind of money
i just hope TB doesnt think he is the savior as a scoring winger... because he's not.
im happy that ryan got that kind of deal though... im sure his father was involved... heavily
And this is exactly why I've been laughing my ass off from the moment it was announced down here. You would not believe the way that people are going ape-**** over signing Ryan Malone. I kid you not. They're acting like they landed the biggest free agent signing of all time. The really hilarious part is that this is the exact same way that they acted down here when they signed Ouellet last year. Priceless. Good luck Malone, you're going to need it to live up to the expectations down here.
One could say he's the first casualty of the Pens salary cap limitations
Eh... you could, but I don't think so. I think he would have been gone with or without the cap.
This does, however, remind of me of the joker that I heard call in to the XM hockey channel this afternoon bemoaning the cap because it makes teams like Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Washington lose their core players that they have worked so hard to develop. Malone was part of the Pens' core? Really?
wait until tuesday. i don't think we've seen anywhere near the spite some people are capable of.
Some people are unaware that hockey is a business, I guess. If Malone thinks he can make a few dollars somewhere else, then all power to him...thank him for his services and move on. Some people are taking this way too personally. And it's not like he was a crucial part of the team, either.
Malone will never again be as good and passionate as he was this past season, that's just my prediction.
I agree completely.
And for the person who asked about good old fashioned "hate."
Malone is the enemy and a traitor as far as I am concerned. Please spare me all the "he did whats best for him." This may be a business for the players, but it is just a sport and a hobby for the rest of us...we can spew forth all the fire and brimstone that we want...lol.
I can't wait until tomorrow is OVER...at least we will know what the hell is going on.

15 mil in the first two years.. anyone see Malone scoring 100+ pts next year? Thats about what it would take to earn that contract.
All that Tampa sun must be mucking up their brains. Malone was mud until early January last year. Remember? He was next to Armstrong on the trade-me wagon. He stepped up his production when, ironically, Malkin stepped up his. Malone's big achievement was breaking his nose twice on national TV during the cup finals. While a grand act of manliness, that aint worth an extra 4 million every year.
If the Pens can steer clear of this free-agent bonaza that Tampa Bay, Philly, and others partake in.. they will be a good team for a long long time. We've already had back-to-back good years, which is more than either of them can claim.

I think someone has some issues.
Malone did what any of us (besides you of course) would have done.
I love my job, and I very much like the people I work with. It's a good environment, and I'm treated well. And if I were offered a 300% raise to bolt...
hey yall, his contract, according to post gazette, is actually 5 years for 35.1 million, with a cap hit of roughly 5 million, that is insane!!! Malone is making more than Brodeur, Mike Richards, Kovalev, and the same as Gonchar. Tamba Bay is the new Washington Redskins, and their owner is the new Daniel Snyder of hockey.

You'd make a great worker's union leader if the owners get to pick one.
