Andrew Cassels v 1.0 won a Richard trophy for Nash. I say yay to Morrison, not because he's a #1 center, but because he's one of the few decent centers available this offseason.

Reason: grammatical errors.
I say yay. I'd rather have a guy like Morrison than spend the bundle on Hossa and not be able to afford defensive help. Get a top flight defenseman and Morrison with Umberger and that isn't a horrible off-season.
I'm no mod by any means but if we could have a Malone thread why not a Morrison.
Look, Morrison would never be my first choice in a world of 20 veteran UFA centers but reality says the pickings for centers is spare this summer. What is not sparse is the need for a veteran center to compliment Rick Nash.
My vote? Howson's season (when all is said and done), may end up being assessed in his abilty to get Morrison in Columbus-regardless of all the reasons it can't happen.
My two cents say: just get Morrison and we can start the rebuilding of the team from there-one must start somewhere.
Note: the RJ trade was an exellent start albeit small.

Sorry if this is a repost. The link below states that we could be offering as much as 8 mill per over 3 years for Morrison. A hefty price, in my opinion. Of course it looks like we are going to have to overpay to get guys. Combine that with a center market that is less then impressive and you're going to have a dogfight for any decent center with a pulse.
We have the money to spend and I think Morrison would be an improvement so I say go get him. With that said, I desperately want a #1 blue-liner too so hopefully we will save a little cash for Redden or Campbell.

It would be $8 million over the course of 3 years, not $8 mill PER year.
Andrew Cassells DID NOT win a Richard Trophy for Nash. Cassels had a broken foot and barely played that year. Cassells' great year was the previous year (year three) working with Sanderson.

Interestingly, though, despite only playing in 58 games that season, Cassels ranked second in terms of assisting on Nash's goals that season (behind Vyborny).
Letowski ranked second in primary assists (and third overall).
I'll admit I have concerns about Morrison's knee injury (and the others) but the Jackets have to go after him. They need an experienced center, even if we can get 60 games out of him it would be worth the 3 mln or so. The key is to have him healthy come playoff time, Howson must make a pitch for him-there really is no alternative.
Dunno, I'm starting to reach the "Just play the kids, grab Tavares and go forward" But A) We have to get to the Cap floor, and B) I don't think the city has the patience that some of us around here have.

Eklund update on Morrison: I am hearing the Blue Jackets are closing in on Neg Rights to Brendan Morrison, and have serious interest in Rozsival and perhaps Bertuzzi. Another possibility is Paul Mara (who is a UFA D-man who has flown under the radar until this morning.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Morrison is a UFA, right? So would we trade for the rights to a UFA (I assume that is what his post is referring to)? I know that RFA rights can be traded, but had never heard of it from a UFA before. I don't know how this all works so I apologize for the naive question.

It happens all the time (see Malone, Ryan; Roberts, Gary; and Rolston, Brian). It's a way to have a day or two to exclusively negotiate with a free agent before the free for all begins.
(Sigh) We've gone from Richards to Marleau and Jokinen and now to Morrison....
Oh well. I have a feeling our FA signing will go something like this.
Morrison, Hagman, Huselius, Commodore, Streit. Not totally thrilling, but we'll see.
Your 08 Jackets Offseason.
Lets break those guys down:
Morrison: 32 yr old, 1st/2nd line center, I'd project him at 20 goals 50 points. Morrison and Umberger running the top 2 lines would be an upgrade from last year and would be adequate, but not ultimately what you want. Brassard could grow into one of those positions late this season.
Hagman: 28 yr old, probable 2nd line LW. Hagman is a finisher. Opposite Zherdev + 2nd PP unit, he could score 30 goals. He would be an upgrade offensively over Chimera on the 2nd line.
Huselius: 29 yr old, 1st/2nd line LW/C. More offensive playmaking version of Hagman. 143 points over the last 2 seasons. Can play center, and has.
Commodore: 28 yr old, large shut down Dman. I wish he skated better, but he is a more matured/polished version of Klesla. 6'5'' and solid.
Streit: 30 yr old puck moving defenseman. He finished 3rd in the NHL for D scoring last season. Reminds me of Tomas Kaberle, great vision, good skating ability. PP QB for sure.

Well we better be "closing in" very quickly on the negotiating rights, because as I understand it, EVERYONE can talk to these players at midnight tonight.
