Ugh, I don't know about that. Honestly, I think the difference between the two is negligible, and they wouldn't have to give up any assets for Campbell.

The Penguins are potentially going to lose three players from positions that are already considered "weak" areas-- scoring wingers and physical d-men. And if they do, it will be because they were unwilling to overpay for those guys in light of the expensive contracts the core guys will be recieving.
So rather than addressing those weak areas, the Penguins are allocate valuable resource to a guy that only adds to one of their two stronger positions? Totally absurd idea.
You don't just sign a guy like Campbell just because he's a star when he doesn't fit a team need. Especially in this cap era.
However, playing the Devil's advocate here, if Shero knew that a team coveted Whitney, and Campbell for whatever reason would sign with the Pens for less than market value at 5-5.5 per, it could be smart asset management to deal Whits for a scoring winger or physical d-man.
Maybe to Colorado if they aren't confident they can re-sign Liles? Just thinking out loud here.
Even if Whitney went somewhere else, it still doesn't make any sense to me. The plan was "We got Gonchar, Letang and Goglonsky - let's trade Whitney to fill a position of need." And trading an offensive defenseman for another o-dman (who may be better but is also older and more expensive) is NOT doing that. It's total overkill while neglecting more important areas.
Orpik is unsigned, we have only 1 top six winger under contract so who wants to waste resources on Campbell? I don't get it.

The point of signing Campbell then trading Whitney would be to fill those needs. With a weaker FA class this year, I think taking one of the BPA and being able to trade an asset to fill a need could be a good plan if Campbell wants to take a paycut.
Replacing Whitney with Campbell would mean we'll have at least 2 million a year less to spend on what we really need. That's what I meant.
That isn't set in stone. The whole "Campbell/Penguins" thing started because Campbell wanted to play somewhere closer to home. If he is going to come here.. it's on Shero's terms. We don't NEED him therefore the only way he becomes a Penguin (w/ the benefits of being so close to home) is to take a cut which would open up the trading of Whitney.
Therefore... it shouldn't be 2M+ that'd we would lose. I don't think Ray Shero wants it to happen as much as Campbell wants it to happen.
Since we are dealing with rumors at this point...San Jose wants Whitney, we need a wing...they have Michalek signed through the 12/13 season.
So the Pens sign Campbell - upgrade from Whitney on Defense and Offense, then trade Whitney for Michalek and fill a need at wing for a long time without spending 8mil a season to do it.
The Melichar rumor makes less sense than this scenario.
Again, just dealing in rumor land....and I haven't heard anything about Michalek being available.

That's not how I would look at it. I would say Hossa's offered deal ($7.5 million or so) + Whitney's cap hit ($4 million) would be replaced with Campbell ($6.5 million or so) plus a scoring winger.
I like Riggs' idea about using Whitney in a trade to get Michalek too, but would the Sharks be interested in that? Wasn't there a rumor going around about them offering Cheechoo for Whitney at the draft?
You're nuts. Not as talented or as young as Campbell and more injury prone, and also a big salary if I recall. Boyle isn't a bad D but he's not the guy I'd go targeting for a multi-million dollar per year deal, ya know? Also, he's often a minus player if memory serves. No thanks.
I'd poop a brick... no... two bricks if we were able to trade Whitney for Michalek and somehow pick up Campbell anyway. OMG would that be sweet. Riggs don't even say stuff like that... now I'm going to have that pipe-dream floating around my brain for the next two weeks as all the trades and moves unfold. I'd say that's an even 2000:1 shot.

I had a dream about a pipe a few months ago, and I don't see what all the fuss is about. It was just a metal pipe laying on the floor, that's it. It wasn't a pipe that belonged to Kevin Stevens, it wasn't thrown by Arnold Schwarzenegger through the body of a bad guy, it wasn't even copper. I guess I just don't get it.
But, that situation would be nice, in a fantasy kind of way.

It's a valid question and one I am ill-prepared to answer, not having dreamt of any pipes myself. In fact I don't dream about much of anything anymore. Or if I do I never remember.
