I think/hope the plan is to build around Nash, Z, Leclaire, and eventually Voracek, Brassard, and Filatov too. Now, that doesn't mean I think Jake, Derrick, and Nikita should all make the team this year. But if they earn it in camp and the preseason and show they are ready they absolutely should be on the team then. Lets hope they all put up at least decent numbers if they do make the team. We could only be 2 years away from having a pretty dynamite team
SLICK NIk - Puts up 60 next year - 25+35.. X - has nothing to do with it

Voracek for example was drafted out of the CHL, and he won't be 20 until next year, so he isn't AHL eligible.

However, if you are drafted out of a European league, you are eligible to join the AHL at age 18, so where Filatov was drafted out of Russia, he is eligible for the AHL this season.
Thanks Mac, what I was wondering though is that if he plays in Junior, can he be transfered to the 'cuse/Jackets partway through the season? Or once he starts there does it need to be an "emergency" to get him out of Junior.

That's a great question, and one that I don't have the answer to. I am pretty sure though that once he plays for a junior team, he can't be called up unless it's on emergency recall, like Mase last year.

I remember a couple of seasons ago when Jiri Tlusty of the Leafs was sent to the AHL at the start of the year, struggled, and then sent to the Soo Greyhounds, who drafted him in the CHL Import Draft. I think I remember the Leafs having to leave him in the Soo after that.

Good analysis... CHL player can not help out the NHL team unless the AHL teams' resources are exhausted.... Bat as usual - Mods ae right!

Two things:

1) By the time Nikita gets up here, I'm betting Z will be gone, either by trade, or he plays out his final year and heads for greener pastures. **{Theory: Hitch is going to be harder on Z this year and the entire team. The gloves will come off. It's a Hitch M.O. And I don't think Hitch will put up with Z's creative style, not when he has other young guns coming up to whip into line.}}

2) Can we PLEASE not pin the nickname "Filly" on this kid. It makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

I would be thrilled to see Filatov stick with the CBJ this season, but I suspect the best thing for his long-term development will be either the AHL or CHL. (Yes I would be OK with him going to junior, if that's what seems best for his development.)

From the TV interview at the draft, I have no doubt that he is a much different person than Zherdev was in his draft year.

I just don't want to be on this board in five years moaning about what might have been if we hadn't rushed him. (Should this be called the Brule syndrome?) I trust The Org to do the right thing this time.

Hey, Mac's a Mod! Congrats!!

Why not let Filatov's play in camp and preseason dictate where he ends up. I see no reason to send him anywhere if he plays well enough to earn a spot here.

I think he will elevate Z's game if he ends up playing on a line with him.

The latest from the Dispatch is that Filatov wants to move back to center.

Personally, I want to see Filatov and Z on the ice together. It could turn out to be something really special.

If we sign Malone, RJ's on the 3rd line with Freddy Modin and Jason Chimera come 2009-10.

Unless Freddy's gone somehow and Legein's skating there. Of course there are a lot of permutations, I was just going with who's here now (although Umberger remains unsigned, I realize).

I'm not as worried about the AHL since many of those "tough bruisers" will be playing on the same team as Filatov. His back will be well covered if he ends up in Syracuse.

Good point. If anyone tries messing with him they got "Nasty" Mirasty, Sestito, Dorsett, hopefully Zenon will be back, ect. to answer to. Syracuse has more than enough guys to protect Filatov.

Filatov @centre.. sounds good to me / the Crosby reference

told me that's what he wants to do

Watched a lot of this guys you - tubes since we drafted him. I didn't want to get to excited prior to the draft because NYI was feigning interest in Nikita. After watching him in his highlight reals.. this guy looks like many of the great snipers of the past.

his skating from the blue line in and the angles he takes looks a lot like the way Modano sets up Goalies, swoops out to the boards then takes a hard slant in rather than just coming in dead on.

Also has wicked passing between the dots. I think this kid & Z could be sweet.

Not to stick up for the newbie... but our arena is empty.. if your a Jacket fan your ok by me.

I too bristle a little at Malone being inked into the lines, not because dude hasn't signed with us, but because he surely isn't going to worth the money he is looking for.

4.5 - 5MM is a lotta bones imo.
