The cupboard wasn't bare when Quinn left. We had a terrible mix, and a very ineffective team.

But we had a bunch of talent and valuable/tradeable assets, and the farm system was loaded more than at any other point in the history of the franchise.

When Brian Burke took over as GM in 1998, there were *10* future NHL regulars in the system at the time. Plus Dave Scatchard and Mattias Ohlund coming off stellar rookie seasons. I don't think most people realize that. Quinn left our farm system absolutely stocked.

By the time Bure, Mogilny and Linden (highly valuable Quinn-era assets) were dealt by the start of 1999, we had four future all-star #1 defenders in place (Ohlund, Jovanovski, McCabe, Aucoin), all three members of the WCE, and a very deep farm.

Quinn left the on-ice NHL product a mess, and deserved to be fired at that point (I can't believe it's been nearly a decade ago now!), but Burke had a ton to work with when he took over.

guys like jeff holden, muckalt, and druken weren't exactly players you would refer to being associated to a deep farm.

Holden and Druken aren't included in that list.

There weren't any stars in the system at that point, but there was a lot of talent, a lot of tradeable assets, and a lot of guys who went on to solid NHL careers. Plus our two best prospects at the time (Ohlund and Scatchard) were coming off their rookie seasons. Plus guys like Aucoin and Scott Walker who went on to very good NHL careers were young guys already on the roster.

We also has Staios (who turned out to be a respectable top four defenseman) around that time didn't we (though we had him playing as a forward)? I'm kinda fuzzy as to when we dealt/"lost" him.....
