NHL 08 - PS2 version

has anyone picked up a ps2 copy yet? i know that most of the focus was on improving the next gen versions, but did they do anything to the ps2 game? the biggest complaint i had about 07 was the option menus. everything seemed just too bare bones, especially in the season/franchise mode. did they elaborate on that at all?

I'm buying it in like 2hours...

I hope to God this version has the AHL and Europe teams, along with some improvements on the goalies/defense.

i do know that it has the ahl. someone confirmed that on the ea forums. don't know about gameplay improvements. i know ea is touting their AI improvement this year. hopefully that applies to this version as well.

i just buy mine...you get the AHL team, but for the rest, it's pretty much the same...i didn't play a game yet, but the create a player is the same **** as last year...same face, same equipement!!! That's really bad.

Also you can't do a dynasty with an AHL team, but you can do a season

I also need to now how to unlock the new RBK edge jersey's...i went to the site, but nothing about the new jersey...maybe it's too soon!

Wow I expected the game to miss some things, but now I don't even feel like spending money on it, I read what you said and I went on the website of Bestbuy and saw the features for the game.

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde..._hmpage_slide3

And for the Ps3:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde..._hmpage_slide3

I was excited about the modifications, but now that I know about that, the create player with the same face and same equipment ??? That's just sick ..
At least current NHL'ers and AHL are uptaded from other years.

It's not everyone that can afford a Ps3 or Xbox 360 and those expensive games!

I haven't bought NHL 07 last year so I'll probably buy it tomorrow anyway but if all of this is right, it's really disappointing.

Is the skating improved atleast?

Playing defense in 07 wasnt the easiest because your defenders wouldnt go exactly where you wanted them to.

can someone explain to me the changes to make in settings to get this game playing realistically? Everyone told me this years ea-NHL wasn't like an arcade-game. But I just went coast to coast, from behind my own net, without passing, and scored a goal in an accurately timed under 3 seconds.

edit: with Marek Malik.
edit2: and I just accidentally shot a back hander from the blue line, and it hit right under the crossbar faster than I could see. I must be missing something for this game to get a 9.4/10 from 1up.

edit3: getting better with tweaks... everything above is first impression....but signs of the above are still there. I'll keep trying the sliders.

It IS more realistic with the new shooting format... but...

how do i get the AHL roster on my NHL dynasty? I dont want to play as the AHL team, but I'd like to be able to use those players on my NHL team... i dunno where im supposed to look for the AHL players...?

Can someone please list the features that are different, rather than saying preety much the same? PS3 version has practice mode. Is that avaliable in ps2 version? AI improved, play maker?

Ive been playing 2k8 and Nhl 08 for ps2, they both are almost identically the same as last years.

2k8 literally took the same format for everything (same button option scheme for the main screen and everything else, changed the color).

NHL 08 is pretty much identical to last years, not really fan of the skillstick ( unsure if it was in last years game ). A few bugs ive found so far...but overall it seems decent.

The only thing ive noticed so far, it seems that goalies are a tad harder to score on. Both mine and their goalie made spectacular saves on one timers. But essentially its the same game. Every year i get hyped and let down, I guess I should have expected it. But in my situation, I can't really complain about the quality of a video game...

And to the above poster, its nearly exactly the same game with a different main menu/trading/create a player etc screens. Everything else is almost identical, playstyle, strategies. If you want someone to list features that are different, go to EA's website, they list them all. AHL teams etc. They can brag it up with point formats all they want, its pretty much NHL 07.

The skill stick is different. With PS2 2007's skill stick you couldnt control your shooting, with 2008 you can. But youre unsure it was even in last years game so I would say you know crap all.

Simmer down with the hostility. I knew you could pass last year with the skillstick, but I never used it, this year I have been using it with the shooting. Preference = not knowing anything, I simply didn't remember....great logic.

Just figured I'd throw it out that that I heard, but have not yet confirmed, that the ps2 nhl08 servers are finally up.

So if anyone wants to play a game online... Maybe we can get some challenges going here.

I saw some of the videos on ign.com and was just wondering if you can design your own plays in the ps2 verison as well as designing your team team jerseys socks and such like they show in the videos

Just a few general impressions of the PS2 version of NHL O8:

Pros:

- Good roster updates, reflecting UFA signings and trades through about August 1.

- AHL addition. Sure, its a pain to adjust rosters to move your AHL guys to their respective NHL teams but it is nice to include the minors.

- The "Hybrid Controls". Anyone who says 08 is nothing more than an 07 roster update hasn't played enough. While challenging, having a fuller intergration of the analog controls is nice. NHL 07 felt "half finished" in this regard. NHL 08 feels more finished. Having "Classic" controls is a nice option but the analog controls create a better game.

- Better AI. The goalies are tougher, defenses a little tighter.

- Fantasy draft and a slightly deeper Franchise mode. The salary cap is more accurate and can present a fun challenge for players who want that full on and off ice sim.

- On the whole, the game just plays better and looks better than last year's addition.

Cons:

- Some sloppy glitches. None of them any worse than prior editions but still present.

- Lack of updated commentary. The same voice tracks (for the most part) for the 3rd year in a row is annoying. I can understand sticking with the same announcers (Houson and Simpson) but would it have killed EA to have them cut some new tracks to comment on Stastny, Ward, Malkin, or other players who have emerged in recent seasons?

- Roster upgrades take time. To fully mesh you NHL and AHL teams you have to do some work, not to mention keeping salaries in check.

Overall, this would appear to be the last year of the "current gen" versions of 08 and 2K8. I suspect there won't even be 2009 versions for the PS2.

Considering I got about 7 dollars in trade for my NHL 07 and the list price for 08 is 30 dollars, I don't find 23 dollars to be too outrageous for a roster update, some added features, and an overall better game.

That said... if I had the dough and based on what I've seen and heard... the PS3 and XBox versions look amazing!

The shooting is weird. It's taken me a while to learn how to rip slap shots from in close, on one timers and in close while deking. It definitely takes some getting used to, as does the skill stick.

What do you guys mean by sliders? What are those?

Also, I noticed the framerate problems for the first time with EA. It's normal until the puck goes behind the net, where it temporarily speeds up the frame rate. It's annoying, but, as I've only played one game, I haven't found any other glitches.

I like the game but this board has made me realize how much better it is on the new gen consoles. I'll be buying a ps3 in the next 12 months just in time for NHL 09.

does anyone know if you can even do all the deekes advertised for ps3/360 on ps2? Cause this was fun for a bit but I'm realizing that it does in fact just seem like an nhl07 roster update.

It really is similar to 07... but the shooting is much harder, along with better goalies and better defense. Hitting is harder too.

I'd say get it. I used to slaughter NHL07... and I just got shutout by Phoenix 2-0... also, shots are more realistic and the AI goalies will make you work hard to score. Maybe it's just I haven't gotten used to the shooting...

So would you say that its definitely much harder to score? The thing I hated the most about 07 was that I couldnt really have a low scoring game. It was always 8-7 or 6-5. If it was 5-3, that was low scoring. The fact that I didnt have a single shootout in my season shows that it was too easy to score. Couldnt go 5 minutes without a goal. Do you know if guys like Toews and E. Johnson are in the game, or do you have to create them?
