they don't really qualify as NHLers, because they signed as free agents and not in case of a lockout.

Heidelberg. Die Adler Mannheim könnten in der kommenden Saison der Deutschen Eishockey-Liga (DEL) prominente Verstärkung erhalten. Where does the money come from?

It's mystery. Davos had some financial trouble in a recent past, and many players had to agree to a pay cut to keep the team together. They even started last season with only two foreign players instead of the three they were allowed to dress, the only time such a thing happend for as long as I can remember.

I wouldn't have been surprised to see such players signing for Bern, ZSC, Lugano, Zug or Geneva, but certainly not for Davos.

I'll try to find an explanation.

with the big names playing in Switzerland, the league should get a good amount of positive attention in case of a lockout.

HC Davos and the Spengler have separate managements and budget. It's hard to really know how the two are linked (in fact it's hard to know anything in Switzerland when money is involved ;) )

i wonder which players we could expect to sign in switzerland. i'd expect a lot from ZSC.

Most teams have been unwilling to gamble on a lockout and went the safe way by signing players who will stay the entire season (Lugano was linked with Dany Heatley, Roberto Luongo, Mickael Nylander and Oli Jokinen, but finally choose Benoit Gratton). Only Zug and Geneva still have open spots for foreign players (one in Zug and three or four in Geneva). Zug is linked with Niko Kapanen, and Geneva's coach Chris McSorley had contacts with many players, but the team's ownership may force him to go with non-NHL players.

Aebischer and Gerber may play for Fribourg and Lugano respectively.

Here's a list of the player movements, with rumours included :

Wrong. It both belongs to the HC Davos AG now. And because it's an AG (corporation in English) now, you will certainly find details about the budget if you try.

More about the relation between the HC Davos and the Spengler Cup:
http://www.hcd.ch/index.cfm?cat=more&Id=2079&type=standard

As for why Davos makes these signings and other not, it's also a bit of a risky thing in case of no lockout. Davos would suddenly have only one foreigner. Further, they can use it as a marketing instrument for the Spengler Cup. And lastly, they might have some bonus because of the location (I could imagine that biggest part of Thorntons cost is not the salary, but the insurance. He does not need a big salary, it's a wash comparing what he gets in the NHL anyway).

Thanks for the link, I didn't know about that.

But I still wonder how Davos, whose players were taking pay cuts one year ago, can afford such players now. If anyone told me two months ago that Thornton would sign with a swiss team, I wouldn't have excepted Davos to be that team.

it's for sure a marketing strategy. and i believe that all three players still cost them several millions. thornton can't expect to get what he earns in the NHL, but it'll still be a lot compared to standard contracts in europe.

i think the risk is lower now as it seems that there will be a lockout for several month. but if the lockout would end in january, davos would lose three key-players for the rest of the season and the POs which would hurt a lot.
how good is davos in general? a solid team somewhere in the middle?

They won the title 3 years ago, and lost the final by a small margin in 2002. Last year they were not that good anymore, finishing the regular season as 4th (or 5th?), and losing in the quarterfinals of the PO.

There are at least 3 teams (Bern, Lugano, ZSC) with bigger budgets than Davos.

I can't imagine that, unless they got some private sponsors. That's just out of reach for a Swiss team. I really think these players sign for bargain prices. During the last lockout there were even NHLers coming over here to practice with Swiss teams (especially Jursinow's), without being employed at all.

Morges verpflichtet NHL-Profi Martin Gelinas

Morges, 22. September

Looks like Ambri-Piotta of the NLA is the newest bidder for Heatley. They seem to look for a replacement for injured top scorer Jean-Guy Trudel. Hnat Domenichelli, a good friend of Heatley's is also playing for Ambri, which could become a factor in Heatley's decision. As of now, I'd say that the chance for a DEL team to sign Heatley is rather small.

"I'm really looking forward to meet him, said Morges coach Olivier Ecoeur. The phone conversation I had with him make me believe he really wants to play for us. He even phoned me saturday to learn about the result of our saturday night game."

"I can't tell an exact figure, but he's really cheap (Morges' season budget is 1.9M CHF, or 1.2M €). He's coming here because one of his friend is living in the Lausanne area (Morges is 10km away from Lausanne), and told him about our team and how living here is nice. (...) He just want to stay in good shape and have fun. He don't care about the financial aspect as he'll even pay his insurances himself."

"The contract details were settled in five minutes, without any intermediate, add Ecoeur. That was so easy that's it's almost to good to be true. (...) Martin even told the club to book the cheapest fly, and paid himself the difference to get a business class ticket."

It's so confusing sometimes. :joker:

Would be easier, when all countries had their own board!

Btw.: This is the first time, I see these "rumours" confirmed.

So then we should put the Austrians also to the central European board, as their boarders are further east that those of Italy. ;)

Joke aside I think the Italians should belong to the Western Europaen board, as there are stronger ties to the German Swiss and Austrian leagues than to central European leagues, language and player wise.

In fact neither Dowd nor Johnson signed a lockout deal ;)

Johnson, like Reid, came over before the season started and has ended his NHL-career for now, as he doesn't want to be traded all the time, like it happened last season.

Dowd was the replacement for Greig, who left the team shortly before the season started. They signed him and not a lockout player, because they didn't want a player to leave the team in the middle of the season (in case of the NHL playing again). That worked out pretty well, now didn't it? ;)

David Oliver (Dallas Stars) has signed for the Guildford Flames of the BNL....

The Guildford Flames ice hockey club have become another in a string of European outfits to capitalise on the lockout situation that is forcing many of the top ice hockey players in the world to search for employment outside North America. The Surrey based club are pleased to announce the signing, subject to work permit, of forward David Oliver who iced last season for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League, scoring 7 goals and 5 assists in 36 matches. Over the course of 8 NHL seasons, Oliver has played 230 games, collecting 49 goals and 49 assists. In 1991, he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers from the University of Michigan where he played 152 collegiate games through 4 seasons, registering more than 200 points. In his first NHL season in 1994-95 he played in 44 games and had 16 goals and 14 assists and followed that up with his first full NHL season in 1995-96 when he had 20 goals and 19 assists in 80 matches. His NHL tour has included stops with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes and most Recently with the Stars. Over that same period he has also spent time in top minor pro leagues, the American and International Hockey Leagues, most notably with the Houston Aeros where he registered 127 points in 160 games. Guildford will not be his first European stint, after 2001-2002 when he signed with the Munich Barons of the German Elite League.

Recent offensive struggles have sent the Flames searching for a gifted scoring forward and the club is confident that Oliver is just the man for the job. The club is hopeful that Oliver will be in the line up for the Flames home doubleheader against Bracknell Bees and Sheffield Steelers on January 15th and 16th.

Flames Head Coach Stan Marple commented:

"We are very happy to have secured the services of an established offensive performer like David. He has earned a reputation for his ability to put up good numbers in any league in the world when he is given ice time. There is no question here that he is a capable offensive go to guy and that is the role we will throw him into. This will be one of his first opportunities where a club uses 3 lines instead of 4 so he will get more ice time on a game-by-game basis and we believe he will benefit from those circumstances. His presence will help to take some of the offensive pressure off our other skilled forwards and allow them to relax a bit more and step up their games as we head down the stretch and into the playoffs."

We've seen a lot of that in Finland lately: North American 'pros' quitting for 'personal reasons' all of a sudden, though sometimes without giving any reason and sometimes even without informing the team or their agent! You gotta respect the passion for hockey that these guys display! I am full of awe...

Well, maybe this teaches some people to respect more the guys who actually make the transition between European and North American leagues (either way), and are able to deal with the different culture and language issues.

Assets
Has solid goal-scoring ability from the back end, mainly due to an explosive point shot. Is an excellent power-play contributor overall.

Flaws
Has to tighten up defensively. Needs to make better use of his 6-2, 200-pound frame. Must also to a better job of avoiding the injury bug.

04-Apr-04: Missed the last 29 games of the regular season (hip injury).
31-Jan-04: Hip injury, sidelined indefinitely.
13-Dec-03: Missed 13 games (bruised foot).
16-Nov-03: Bruised foot, sidelined indefinitely.

Except the injuries: Can you say Delmore ? :dunce:
Just what they needed :joker:

I personally think this kind of stuff, is, well, a load of crap. I can't imagine what has happened since Gionta arrived in Germany and since he just made this announcement, but there's nothing about his wife and her problems that he knows now that he didn't already know as he told Iserlohn he'd come play for them.

Scott Nichol will Return to the London Racers...

Great news for London and for British Hockey to see an NHL player feel dedicated enough to return to play for nothing after sorting out his personal problems!! :handclap:

from londonracers.com
The London Racers are thrilled to announce the return of NHL star Scott Nichol. The feisty forward played just six games with the Racers but made an immediate impact with the team. In the three weeks he was with London, Nichol scored a goal and added five assists. Coach Dennis Maxwell says he and his team are ecstatic about the return of Nichol.

“Scooter is such a professional. He added a lot to our team both on and off the ice. We are very lucky to have him back; he is going to bring a lot to the Racers.”

A veteran of the Chicago Blackhawks, Nichol was an instant fan favourite in the Capital. His time was cut short with the team after he had to return home immediately for a family emergency. Now that his family is healthy, Nichol says he wants to return to help the Racers down the stretch.

“I had a great time in London, my team-mates and the organization treated me very well. I believed in this team from the start and wanted to come back.”

A tough grinder, Nichol has played 208 games in the NHL with 45 points and 415 penalty minutes. A face-off specialist, Nichol was first on the Chicago Blackhawk in draws. The hard hitting skater is a six year veteran of the American Hockey League (AHL), playing for the Rochester Americans. The Blackhawks leader has played 325 games in the AHL, racking up 172 points and 813 minutes in penalty.

Nichol’s experience as an Assistant Captain at the NHL level made him a great leader with the Racers. Maxwell says that extra bit of experience will be crucial to the team as they try and hold the final spot in the playoffs.

“Scott was a great role model for all of the players. He made a great impact both on and off the ice; we are a better team with him in the line up.”

Nichol’s return to the Racers will not come at a better time. Expected in the line up for the February 6th game against the Belfast Giants, London will need all the scoring power they can muster against the league leaders.

Face off for the match against the Giants is 6:30 PM with doors opening at 6 PM. Tickets are £12 for adults, £8 for students/OAP and £6 children. To order tickets in advance phone 0207 420 5904.

It is at least a little misleading. Each time an NHL player signed in Switzerland this season, I saw him get the "NHL star" label in the newspaper, whether he was Alex Tanguay or Rob DiMaio. Fans expected to see DiMaio being a difference maker when he really isn't better than most import players.

Well, I think it's too little too late! If Giguere can provide several shutouts and hold to opponent to a goal or two a game, then fine. However, offense is and has been Hamburg's BIG problem. They've been riding on Johnson and Reid for far too long. Purdie and House have been terrible in comparison to what they usually bring. This team desperately needed a Guerin/Gionta/Langenbrunner/Cole type, and they've needed him since day 1. Considering they've done nothing to replace Dowd - who was a disappointment - I think Hamburg's biggest problem is upstairs. The management has NOT gotten the job done. I just can't believe this team continues to go to war with guys like Young, Antons, Martinovic and Oravec playing on the 2nd and 3rd lines. Just incredible that they haven't dropped much further in the standings!

Unless he has already been signed but not yet announced, then this won't happen (deadline gone). I am not sure about him being friends with him, but that is what i heard....
Yeh I was hoping Brett would continue with the Flames junior organisation and work up to the BNL, but he obviously is an ambitious lad, and with his dad having played in the NHL, and his scoring record in the junior ranks over here, i supopse it was unlikely he would stick around....

Good to hear he is doing well. I remember when he was 11 he was able to skate cricles round players who were 15, had great natural ability. Be interesting to see if he makes the show in the future.
