Hellström 07-30-2004, 08:01 AM According to www.eurohockey.net Tim Ramholt has signed with ZSC Lions in Switzerland.
He played for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL last season and i did expect him to stay in NA.
Don´t think that this is a good decision.
Hopefully Roman Wick (who impressed at the Ottawa camp) is able to make the Red Deer Rebels.
Ottawa-Scout Hedberg stated, that Wick was the most skilled forward in their camp.
zecke26 07-30-2004, 09:43 AM that's really a surprise and sad as well. i don't think it was a wise move from ramholt and somehow swiss players have a tradition to go back too early. ramholt had a good season and with another one he could have made a strong bid towards the flames roster. but now he's out of reach for them to scout him regularly and it will hurt his reputation and with maybe limited ice-time his development as well.
stv11 07-30-2004, 06:59 PM Ramholt plans to play just one season for ZSC, and hopes to be in the AHL the following year. He discussed the situation with Calgary, so it's not a case of going home too early.

ah ok, thanks for the inside. nevertheless he's another player from switzerland who doesn't want to play the north american style it seems.
i see no logical reason for ramholt to go back to zurich for one season. it's the same old swiss league, skilled but soft hockey.

That's not true at all. The Flames have no reason to sign him this year so it's cheaper and maybe better for him to go home for a year and play a bit rather then waste another year in the CHL because he dominated at 19 and proved all that he could last year for Cape Breton, he was arguably the teams most popular player on and off the ice which says a lot about his charachter. Tim Ramholt will be an NHL defenceman, but there is no hurry as long as there are question marks about the amount of ice time he'll recieve in NA this year when he can play close to home and make some good money.

It's still a higher level than junior hockey, and as RyanM pointed out, Ramholt don't have anything to prove in junior.
I'm not sure why he didn't go directly to the AHL, but I know he discussed the move with Calgary's management, and they agreed it was good for him. The guy wants to be an NHLer, so he's clearly not shying away from the north american style.
Concerning the swiss league toughness, we finally start seeing some improvement.

uhm...his stats weren't that impressive though. he could do better.

well, the AHL would indeed be the best option. couldn't he sign with an AHL team for one season?

slow improvement though. the NLA is not really a good league if you want to compete in north america later. it's good to play there when you don't want to jump to the NHL after that, but if ramholt really wants to fight for a job on the flames roster next year, he made the wrong decision. i won't rule him out, he's too talented, i just say it was a mistake.

You're probably right, but I don't think the move is as bad as you seem to think.

Calgary is stacked on defense, so it will probably take some time for Ramholt to crack the line up. He will play at least one AHL season.
