Ukrainian Ice Hockey Agency Website (http://www.hockey.org.ua)

------------------------------------------------------------------

FORWARDS:

Ruslan Fedotenko, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) [LW/RW]

- First Ukrainian Stanley Cup Champion. He brought the Stanley Cup home, during the summer of 2004 as he lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to victory over the Calgary Flames in game seven. He is a big guy, which is rare. He is also a presence infront of the net. His defensive game isn't too shabby either. He comes to play big games, loves to play offense.

Alexei Ponikarovsky, Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) [LW/RW]

- Alexei is by the far the biggest and strongest Ukrainian to ever hit the ice. His speed is a great asset. Consistancy must get better if Alexei wants to be remembered as one of the best. He is exactly what Ukraine needs, an in-your-face player that can put the puck in the back of the net.

Sergei Varlamov, Ak Bars Kazan (RSL) [LW/RW]

- Sergei is not very tall but he's a strong guy. He likes to dangle with the puck and when he shoots it, watch out it's deadly and accurate. Arguably Ukraine's best shot. He's been a regular for the Ukrainian national team and has recieved plenty of ice time due to the better Ukrainian players teams going farther into the play-offs.

Vadim Shakhraychuk, Dynamo Moscow (RSL) [C]

- Arguably Ukraine's best international tournament player. He posseses impressive offensive skills, and will put up points in a hurry. Vadim is very popular in Russia as he has played well with a team full of stars at Dyanmo Moscow. He has an accurate shot and good skating, an all round offensive player. I'm suprised he never got a chance to play in North America, who's knows what could of happened.

Other Notable Forwards

- Andrei Mikhonov [C/LW], Oleksandr Matveichuk [LW], Boris Protsenko [RW], Konstantin Kalmikov [LW], Evgeny Lazarev [RW], Konstantyn Kasyanchuk [LW/C/RW], Vlad Serov [LW], Roman Salnikov [LW], Vitaly Semenchenko [LW], Oleg Timchenko [LW], Sergei Kharchenko [LW/C/RW], Aleksandr Bobkin [LW/C/RW], Evgeny Pastukh [RW], Bogdan Savenko [RW], Vitali Litvinenko [RW], Vasili Bobrovnikov [LW/C/RW], Vladimir Slivchenko [RW], Alexander Zinevich [LW/C/RW], Ruslan Bezschasny [LW/C/RW], Valentin Oletski [RW], Dmitri Tsyrul [LW], Artem Gnidenko [LW/C/RW]

DEFENCEMAN:

Dmitri Tolkunov, Amur Tigers Khabarovsk (RSL) [D]

- Dmitri is a vital piece of Ukraine's national team. He plays minutes on the power play and the penalty kill. He is very reponsible in his own end and makes the good first pass. He can shoot the puck as well, but he does have a small frame. That's the only reason why Dmitri couldn't succeed at the NHL with the Blackhawks.

Gennady Razin, Amur Tigers Khabarovsk (RSL) [D]

- Drafted by Montreal in 1997, le Canadiens were hoping for more production on the farm from Gennady, he posted solid numbers in my opinion but Montreal's loss is Europe's gain. Gennady is your typical stay-at-home defenceman, he's responsbile defensively and can chip in with a point here and there. His big frame allows him to lay the body on opposing players.

Yuri Gunko, Sokol Kiev (EEHL) [D]

- Yuri was drafted by the St.Louis Blues in round 9 in 1992. His frame 6'3 220lbs, makes him one of the biggest Ukraine's to dawn the jersey. Physical player who loves to dish out the big hits, he could be more responsible defensively though. He also chips in with an assist or two occasionally to help out the cause.

Other Notable Defenceman

Valeri Shiryayev [Retired?/D], Konstantin Ryabenko [D], Aleksandr Skorokhod [D], Denis Isaenko [D/F], Vyacheslav Zavalnyuk [D], Oleksandr Zlotkin [D], Andrei Sryubko [D], Artem Ostroushko [D], Maksim Linnik [D], Dmitri Yakushin [D], Sergei Klimentiev [D], Vyacheslav Timchenko [D], Oleg Polkovnikov [D], Aleksandr Savitsky [D]

GOALTENDERS:

Konstantin Simchuk, Salavat Yulayev (RSL) [G]

- Konstantin has been Ukraine's MVP is the last several tournaments, he has always given his team a chance to win every night. He tryed playing in North America in several minor leagues but never got adjusted to the North American game, so back to Europe he went and has been relatively successful.

Igor Karpenko, Metallurg Magnitogorsk (RSL) [G]

- Who can forget December 27th 1996 in Boston, at the World Juniors. Ukraine beat team USA 4-3 because of the outstanding play of this young goaltender. Igor had a couple of stints in the AHL and ECHL but never got the hang of it so instead he returned to Europe, playing as the starting goaltender for the Metallurg Magnitogorsk for the past five seasons.

Other Notable Goaltenders

Evgeny Brul [G], Valentin Chernenko [G], Sergei Tkachenko [G], Vladimir Seliverstov [G]

The World Cup has just announced that it has expanded from 8 teams participating to 12! They phoned me up and told me to send a Ukrainian team immediately ;)

Line 2) Konstantin Kalmikov - Vadim Shakhraychuk - Vadim Slivchenko

Line 3) Alexei Ponikarovsky - Andrei Mikhonov - Sergei Varlamov

Line 4) Aleksandr Matveichuk - Aleksandr Bobkin - Boris Protsenko

Didn't know Khristich retired. Did Shiryayev as well?

Other notables I'd add:
D Sergei Klimentiev (best Ukraine d-man in my oppinion)
F Vitali Litvinenko (one of the better forwards the last few years)
D Vyacheslav Timchenko
F Vasili Bobrovnikov
F Vladimir Slivchenko
F Alexander Zinevich
F Ruslan Bezschasny
F Valentin Oletsky
D Oleg Polkovnikov

I gather that prospects Viktor Andrushenko and Alexei Voytsekhovsky are the best to come along in quite a while - particularly Andrushenko.

Alrite, thanks for the input. I'll add it to the thread.

I have no clue what's up with Dmitri, he did not play for Ukraine at the latest World Championships and he is not listed on the Metallurg Magnitogorsk roster. As for Valeri Shiryayev, I think it is time to hang up the skates but on EuroHockey.net it says he's listed at SC Langnau for the 04/05 season which is incredible for the 41 year old.

Ahh yes, Sergei and Vitali totally skipped my mind.

May I ask, what's your input on how a line-up would look like?

Sort of off topic, but I think Dmitri Khristich is very underrated, career-wise. He doesn't seem to get much respect.

Dmitri Khristich officially retired from professional hockey at the age of 35, last season he posted 4 goals, 7 assists and 11 points with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Russian Super League...

So ends Ukraine's best NHL hockey player ever to put on the skates.

With the news that Sokol Kiev will be joining up with the league in Belarus, Sokol added some key players to insure a competitive team. Goaltender Evgeny Brul, defenceman Maksim Linnik and forwards Aleksandr Matveichuk, Vitali Litvinenko, Roman Salnikov all transferred to the Kiev based team.

These players have come from back to play in Ukraine after having previous experience in North America and Russia.

I personally think it's great to see these Ukrainians coming back home to help the cause, the Sokol team looks very competitive and the teams from Belarus and Latvia have there hands full.

Babchuk plays for russia? Sry I dont know much about Eruo hockey, but why would he play for them when it comes to a country type tourney?

1991
08-28-2004, 09:41 AM
Babchuk does play for Russia, why?

Russia participates in all the major hockey tournaments while Ukraine are a regular at the World Championships, but not much else. Anton wants to play in those big tournaments

Ukraine and Russia were still USSR when he was born, he wanted more of a challenge and wanted to be around future hockey players so Russia was his pick...

Really, if you want that answer you would have to ask him :dunno:

I wasnt trying to be rude, I have nothing against Russia, but I just didnt know if there was an outstanding reason why he would play for Russia when hes listed as being from the Ukraine.
sry i didnt mean to insult anyone...

Ukraine kicked off the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge with a 7-4 loss to Latvia yesterday. Isenko, Bobrovnikov, Litvnenko and Salnikov scored the goals. Ukraine plays Belarus on September 4th and France on the 5th.

Roster:

Goaltenders:
Evgeni Brul "Сокол"
Vadim Seliverstov "Сокол"

Defenceman:
Yuri Gunko "Сокол"
Denis Isenko ХК "Гомель", Белоруссия
Nikolai Ladihin "Сокол"
Yuri Navarenko "Сокол"
Oleg Polkovnikov "Сокол"
Vasiily Poloniski "Сокол"
Aleksandr Saviski "Сокол"
Vladimir Chernenko "Сокол"

Forwards
Vasiily Bobrovnikov "Сокол"
Artem Bondarev "Сокол"
Artem Hnidenko "Сокол"
Vikor Honcharenko "Сокол"
Konstantin Kasyanchuk без клуба
Vitaly Litvnenko без клуба
Aleksandr Matveichuk "Сокол"
Valentin Oleski "Сокол"
Evgeni Pastuh "Сокол"
Roman Salnikov "Сокол"
Vitaly Semenchenko ХК "Гомель", Белоруссия
Sergey Harchenko "Сокол"

Pretty much 90% of the team play for "Sokol" Kiev, disappointing loss to Latvia but i'm liking this team. Nice to see some younger players in Matveichuk and Pastuh getting a chance to play.

Awful goaltendering in my opinion, Ukraine needs either Simchuk or Karpenko to be successful at an international stage. Either then that, defence depth could be better.

That is the top division in the tournament. The second division has Denmark, Hungary, Poland and Italy playing in it, I believe.

Polonitsky - Gunko

Salnikov - Shakhraychuk - Lytvynenko
Dyachenko - Shafarenko - Materukhin

i was live at the game in nitra from the 2nd period. so here's my 0.02$ :
it was actualy quite fun to watch.
i expected lower tempo of the game, but there was some checking along the boards, we saw some punches in a fight between granak and salnikov i think :yo:
atmosphere was not so good, like it use to be in nitra, but much much better then in other cities.
lasak was horrible and i hope he wont play in riga :banghead:
referee Konc was even worse :shakehead
slovak roster was Lasak - Podhradsky, Milo, Vydareny, Strbak, Granak, S. Hudec, Stehlik - Vaic, Rastislav Pavlikovsky, A. Nedorost - Ciernik, Kapus, Zalesak - Jarolin, Kollar, M. Kovacik - Spilar, Podkonicky, M. Hudec but i noticed some changes in it during the game.
the UKR team seemed solid but very slow and static, mainly in their own zone.
here u can see the goals link (http://www.hokejportal.sk/video/svk-ukr.mpg)
here some fans photos link (http://www.fans.sk/images/0506/060502_SVK-UKR/index.html)

Preliminary Round Review

1) Taking far too many penalties, leading the tournament with 96 PIMS

2) Once again the two goaltenders are carrying this team on their shoulders. Konstantin Simchuk and Igor Karpenko have played well.

3) Sergei Klymentiev is suspended two games, he's one of the better defenders however has taken some dumb penalties.

4) The offense is basically coming from 3 players and a suprising offensive burst out of big defender Yuri Gunko. Andrei Mikhnov, Yuri Dyachenko and Konstantin Kasianchuk have all contributed.

5) Veteran's Vadym Shakhraychuk and Vycheslav Zavalniuk are taking far too many stupid penalties. The Ukrainian's expected wiser play from those two.

6) Where is Sergei Varlamov? He's exactly what we'll need against the Russians.

My feeling after I watched the game vs. Sweden is that Ukraine are fairly hard to break down but they don't have any offence.

There is a long term problem though because it seems like most of the better players are beginning to get old.

There are always concerns about everything when it comes to the Ukrainian national team. However I look forward to the offensive emergance of Andrei Mikhnov and hopefully soon to be Ukrainian national team member prospect Egor Egorov.

- We see two key national team members in Simchuk and Klimentiev (voted 2 out of the top 3 best Ukrainian players) meet up with HK MVD Tver.

Sokol are going through some tough times, finanically and have seen key players such as starting goaltender Karpenko, and even backup keeper Fedorov move on. Also recently with the move of Gnidenko, Polonitsky, and Navarenko to Vitebsk.

Sokol are in the same situation as BK Kiev (basketball) and Arsenal Kiev (soccer). The newly elected mayor of Kiev doesn't believe in having municipal sports teams, therefore all the funds they've been recieving from the city are cut.

Sokol are looking for buyers, but no one has stepped up, but i'm sure someone will. I've heard some rumours about Arsenal Kiev, and Obolon Kiev merging too..

Kind of off-topic, where did that 1st round draft pick, in the NBA.. he's Ukrainian, where did he play?

really? wow

I'm glad to see Oleg bring the cup there, especially with all his years on the Russian squad and RSL

i guess pairing him with Vish in those world tournaments was more than just a coaching decision

congrats anton and oleg! hopefully we have 3 bringing it home next year! (maybe somehow ponikarovsky, vishnevski, and Z wind up on the same roster and make a cup run? lol)

Base team for Ukraine NT HK Sokol Kiev might back out of BOL (Belarus Open League), moreso theres a good chance team will be disbanned.

Even though Sokol in june confirmed that they will play in BOL, but after the change of political situation, club has left practicaly without finacial help and its future is in danger.

In the Belorussian newspaper "Pressbol", the new mayor of Kiev Leonid Chernovsky has stated that he doesnt care about the future of the club. So, Sokol will only recive only about 20 000 bucks, wich was given by mayore who was there before Chernovsky.

Even if the situation is unclear, many of the last seasons leaders are in Kiev and are training. Kiev hasnt signed any of those players yet, so anyone is free to leave and one by one they do. For the first time in 43 years, Sokol doesnt have pre-season camp.

I can only add - Its painfull to watch whats goin on with hockey in Ukraine. And if Sokol will be disbanned, this will hit hard the whole hockey structure in Ukraine. Critical times. Hope they will sort this out.

It's true, no money.. no hockey.

There's still hope that someone may step up with some cash and save the team, i'm shocked that no one is willing to step up thus far.

Even with the team in trouble, Sokol have still managed to keep the core of their forwards and defensemen, but have lost all of their goalies.

Some more Ukrainians on the move.. Evgeny Lazarev to Dynamo Moskva, Aleksandr Matveichuk to Changchun Fuao in China?!? Valeri Shiryayev to HC La Chaux-de-Fonds, Andrei Sryubko to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod.

Sokol Kyiv are set to begin the new season any day now, but the exhibition games have been a complete disaster being outscored 15-1 in 2 games. However these two games where played against RSL teams.

I predict Sokol to fight it out in the mid-table and possibly grab a playoff spot. Or, it can be a very long season.

Some former Sokol Kiev and Bekrut Keiv players are now playing for my team in England ........Hull Stingrays in the Elite league, they are all playing very well at the minute, we have Pavel Gomenuyk and Nikolai Ladygin on defence and Sergiy Rublivsky and Sergiy Kharchenko as forwards, we also have duel national Slava Koulikov playing for us as well he is classed as British now since he moved over here with his dad Alexadre Koulikov.

Other Ukrainiens that ave played for us in the past include Andre Nikoleav and Slava Timchenko.

Kharchenko is doing very well, taking the hits and laying on the passes for Segiy Rublivsky. Slava Koulikov is also on the 1st line with him and they are doing very well

kharchenko is on 3+7 from 11 games
Rublivsky is on 7+3
Koulikov is on 1+10

Too bad that there really isn't anything positive about Ukrainian hockey to talk about, Sokol is a bottom beater and the Ukrainian NT can't pull off somewhat of an upset result anymore. So the discussion heads towards Ukrainian legends. Which is cool too,

Sokol Kyiv update, in 37 games this season 6 wins, 4 ties, 2 over-time losses. And 25 L's in the loss column. Finishing, 2nd last in the Belarus Open League.

With a 7-7 record in the Ukrainian league, Sokol has also lost their crown as the dominant team in Ukraine. They finished 3rd, behind new champions ATEK Kyiv who hadn't lost a game all year, and Berkut Kyiv who finished 2nd.

On the international stage, Ukraine was one win away against Denmark to advancing to the main U-20 tournament, in Czech Republic next year.

There were some really great Ukrainian kids playing junior hockey in western Canada during the mid 90's. Im earlier threads some people have alluded to Sergei Varlamov (Swift Curent Broncos) and Gennady Razin (St Albert Saints and Kamloops Blazers). There was also Andrei Lupandin (Brandon Wheat Kings), Oleg Tverdosky (Brandon Wheat Kings) and some of the other boys from Druzbha 78 who were picked up by Junior A teams in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Danius Zubrus was part of the Druzbha team also.
I saw Igor Karpenko play against the Russian team during the world junior tourney in Alberta 1996. Karpenko was a great little goalie and very athletic. The Ukraine team had Lazarenko at that time who had incredible skating skills in the offensive zone.
The Ukrainian kids all really liked Alexandre Fomitchev(Moscow Dynamo) who eventually went on to become a WHL All Star (Calgary Hitmen) and 9th round pick of the Edmonton Oilers. Alex Fomitchev came to Canada as a 16 year old and played great at the junior level. The Ukrainian players treated him like a brother affectionately calling him "Sascha" and marvelled at his athletic goaltending saves.
Oleg Tverdosky only played 7 WHL games before moving up to the NHL level. At 18 he was about 2 levels above his comparable peers talent wise, the game almost seemed to slow at that level for him.
Varlamov had a great deal of success at the WHL level. He was a strong puck control forward with an elusive sneakiness that disturbed the opponents. Andrei Lupandin was a terrific skater and tough as nails but being 5'8" made it tough to move up in the pro ranks no matter how hard he played.
One foot note that must be made, the Ukrainian community in Edmonton made a huge buffet meal for the Ukrainian and Russian kids after the World Junior game and made game tickets freely available to all who wanted to attend. Every one of those kids had seen some real hardships after the collapse of Communism and had some idea of what actual hunger felt like. I still remember seeing the Ukrainian and Russian kids waiting for the buses in Alberta during the world juniors. Playing hockey because they loved the game. Those kids were half starved and they played hockey with such passion. They deserve our respect.

This is an interesting prospective on the Ukrainian kids coming over to Canada. Right now times are changing as the kids are going to American prep schools. These days looking at drafts, kids do get drafted into the NHL out of these places, so this is a positive for the kids that are coming over, plus recieveing an education isn't too bad either.

WheatiesHockey
02-18-2007, 01:43 AM
There really are not too many Ukrainian kids playing at the CHL level these days for a variety of reasons. The total number of "imports" is currently two players per team and will eventually be reduced to one.
The CJAHL teams in the mid 90's didn't have any regulations with respect to European imports, so that players like Zubrus wound up playing with the Pembroke Lumber Kings or Gennady Razin who wound up playing with St Albert Saints (AJHL) and then migrating to the WHL level as an 18 year old with the Kamloops Blazers.
It must be very tough these days for promising Ukrainian prospects to get noticed by NHL scouts or have the opportunity to play their game in Canada. Junior A teams in Canada can not really recruit the younger prospects (16-17) like they did back in the mid-90's. At the CHL level imports are increasingly mid level NHL draft prospects taken between the 3rd and 7th roundsa dntheir selction is largely based on the recommendations of NHL scouts or player agents, since it is practically impossible for CHL teams to actively scout Europe let alone the Ukraine. Unfortunately even the best Russian prospects like Malkin, Datsyuk and Kovalchuk for example never usually play even one game at the CHL level and make the direct jump to NHL level hockey. It is incredibly tough for Ukrainian kids no matter how talented or how much potential they have to get noticed. A really great kid from the Ukraine might have a big struggle even getting an agent to promote him or get him to Canada to play the Canadian style game or find a CHL junior team willing to pay all the transfer fees, language lessons, air fare etc etc on a prospect. The CHL or NHL teams might if the kid was the next Oleg Tverdosky or Sergei Fedorov, but realistically how many teenagers fit that bill? NHL ready at 19 or 20..not many kids..anywhere.
Nikolai Zherdev is a pretty terrific hockey player with some nice skills. He was just too talented as a 19 year old for any NHL team to ignore and Columbus was lucky enough to get his services. Zherdev is another prospect that never spent one day on a CHL roster during his youth. Fans of junior teams in Canada would have probably loved him.

We don't want Division A, we're going to stick with big boys if we beat Denmark.

I don't know where the goals are going to come from, but they need to put a couple in if they want to stick around.

P.S. According to the Ukrainian hockey fed Simchuk was on the roster, and now he isn't. :(

They all refused, 'cause they were afraid of unicertainty of their status in Russia. If Ukis are counted as foreign players, they won't be able to hook up with any RSL teams, as only 3 foreingers are allowed and the spots will go to Chehs, Slovaks, some Canadiens, Finns and Swedes first and foremost...

Good question,

Probably had one too many Slavutych's and couldn't find his way onto the right plane.

Although I must admit, I haven't really been following Ukr. hockey for a while now, it's just too depressing. :(

It is depressing, there's no hope in sight, ever.

So Ukraine is relegated, and will play in Div 1 for the first time since '98 which they won.

If all the NHL'ers born in Ukraine actually played for them...Ukraine would be able to ice quite a good team. It's a shame that most of them go for Russia.

Well, it's been almost half a year since I or someone else has posted in here. So i'll bring this aging thread out of the closet. There is much to talk about, it's looks as though hockey in Ukraine is not dead.

Sokol Kyiv have had a MUCH better season, then last. They are competing for a playoff spot, in their first year in a different league, the Vysshaya Liga (RUS-2). They've changed half their roster, adding new players, and it seems as though it is working.

As for domestic hockey in Ukraine, a new team, named 'Барс' (Bars) has come out of no where to be competing hand in hand with Sokol-2 for the Ukrainian Championship. 'Барс' are led by former Sokol Kyiv and Ukrainian National players, Brul, Savchenko, Tolkunov, Polkovnikov, and Shevchenko.

Overall, things are looking a lot better then last year. Domestically stronger, and Sokol are playing better quality sides, which only means better development of national team players.

In fact, a magazine called 'Хокей' gets published monthly and is raising a lot of discussion about the issues of Ukrainian hockey. The Ukrainian federation is talking about the possibility of creating a 4 year plan to revamp it's youth hockey, more rinks are being built at the same time.

Is Sokol planning to join the new league in Russia (granted it starts) next season?

I think it's just a way to go around the no foreign goalies rule for the most part, you can see so many coming to Russia (Scott, Brathwait some others) it can't be for 4 month...
