GentlemanOfLeisure 06-30-2004, 02:16 PM I have been reading a lot latley especially out of Pittsburgh that they don't want there 2nd overall pick to turn out like Kirk Muller. You know, the guy picked behind Mario Lemieux. Now that his career is over, considering he did not get 1000 points, was Kirk Muller a bust???

HELL NOOOOOOOOO

Kirk Muller was a very fine NHLer and a key component in a Montreal Stanley Cup win.
Muller wasn't a bust, there was just a huge gap between him and Lemieux. Of course, the same would be said of any player and Lemieux - except for Gretzky.
Devilsfanatic 06-30-2004, 02:42 PM You've given me a good idea.......I'll be back in 20 minutes
Devilsfanatic 06-30-2004, 02:56 PM Well, so far.......Habs fans say.....NO!

I'm sure if Malkin participates in as many meaningful playoff games, wins two Cups , I'm sure they'll be happy. Eventually.
Bust. Meh. That word gets used far to often.
David Puddy 06-30-2004, 04:07 PM I say no. Kirk Muller was not a failure. He helped the Devils go from the woeful early years to the playoff team. He was a major part of the 1987-88 Patrick Division Playoff Championship. He was then traded to Montreal for Stephane Richer. Both men helped their new clubs win the Stanley Cup within four seasons. Muller captained Montreal's last Stanley Cup Champion.
Kirk Muller certainly didn't have the talent of Mario Lemieux, but he shouldn't be considered a failure because of that. He had a very good NHL career. He is on the tier of players just below the Hall of Fame level.

I love Muller, favorite all time player aside from Elias, but after Montreal he was trife.
Niedermayer21 06-30-2004, 06:17 PM Kirk Muller had one Cup with Montreal. Mario had two Cups with Pittsburgh. Captain Kirk was a great leader and a helluva nice guy!!! I was very upset when Lou dealt Muller, but it worked out well for both teams. Mario is a lock for the Hall. Muller is borderline. Kirk does not have "great" stats, but he was clutch and his hard-working mentality epitomized the Devils work ethic in the late 1980s, and especially during our great playoff run in 1988.
Mario is an all-time great. I don't know why Tommy McVie didn't tell the team to tank all of its games at the end. But Kirk Muller was a fine player and a fine person. His line with Aaron Broten and Pat Verbeek on the wings was fun to watch play. Muller was kind of like a poor man's Bryan Trottier. I think that is the best way to describe him.
BTW, does anyone know who the third pick in the 1984 Draft was? No cheating. Let's just say that the answer is a bit ironic. ;) This former player has a Stanley Cup ring courtesy of the 1994 New York Rangers, but he hardly ever played. That is the only hint you get. :)
DevilFisch 06-30-2004, 09:55 PM Kirk Muller was one of, if not, the best Devil in the pre-Brodeur era. Muller ends his career with 357 goals, 602 assists, and 1223 PIMs in 1349 games and won, what, 2 Cups? Definitely NOT a bust.

Ed Olczyk?
Hellsempire 06-30-2004, 10:09 PM Kirk Muller was not a bust and they are pretty good stats there... He did very well when playing for the Devils and mostly throughout his career... I always liked Muller...
Niedermayer21 06-30-2004, 10:49 PM Yes, Eddie O., now the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins was the third player selected in the 1984 NHL Draft, behind Mario and Muller.
He played on a line with Pat LaFontaine and David A. Jensen in the 1984 Olympics. I think it was called the "Diaper Dandy Line" or something like that??? It has only been 20 years ago. :help: ;)
tieio 07-02-2004, 11:58 PM He was a key leader for the Habs in the '93 cup run, aside from that, he was a bust in my opinion. He had some great contributions as a person and as a leader, but as a player, he was short of expectations.
sliveD 07-03-2004, 12:07 AM Is this a joke? This is a ridiculous post. He didn't get 1000 points only 959! Almost 20 year NHL career in 1359 Games. Never in the minors,Team captain character, at least one cup. Only two HOFers and a God outscored him from his draft class. The only players drafted #2 in the 80's that you can clearly say were better are Shanahan and Bellows! He gets a bum rap because he was a Consolation prize to Lemieux. See Dave Chyzowski. That is a bust
