David Puddy 06-24-2004, 02:36 PM Here is the latest Mark Everson article. He, at least this time, has some Lou Lamoriello quotes in this column.
DEVS GM LOU LIKES DRAFT AS IT STANDS (http://www.nypost.com/sports/devils/17568.htm)
"I hope the draft stays very similar to what it is now," the Devils' GM said. "I would not want to think that anything would change."
Lamoriello also said that he wouldn't be issuing qualifying offers until after the draft. Among those, he must offer restricted free agent Jeff Friesen a $3 million contract, or he becomes unrestricted on July 1. He also has an option on Jan Hrdina.
Everson echoes his Gomez-trade talk. I ask my fellow Devils fans this, would you trade Gomez, Ahonen, #22 overall and maybe some future picks to get Alexander Ovechkin or Evgeni Malkin? I really like Scott Gomez playmaking skills, but another guy who can put the puck in the net besides Elias is greatly needed. I don't know if it could be done, but it is tempting ponder, maybe just a pipe-dream.
DownFromNJ 06-24-2004, 02:38 PM Gomez, Ahonen, a few picks for Ovechkin or Malkin?
Yeah, I'd take it. I don't think it will happen without Parise in there though.
Washington and Pittsburgh are in over their head in goaltenders. It would take a lot of picks.
Elias-Parise-Ovechkin.....

Gomez is good, young, and relatively cheap right now. He has great chemistry with Elias, and last time I checked, Elias scoring goals is about all we have right now on the offensive end. If we were in complete rebuilding mode, I'd think about it, but we aren't. We need good defensemen rather than another forward, so I say no.
Classic Devil 06-24-2004, 02:48 PM There has been speculation that Lamoriello might package Scott Gomez with that pick, and possibly more, to move up — if not for top-ranked Russians Alexander Ovechkin or Evgeni Malkin, for another leading prospect.
:lol
As far as I know, Mark, you're the only one speculating.
4check22 06-24-2004, 09:53 PM I think the days of Scott Gomez being one of the leagues "best bang for your buck" bargain NHL players are just about over though.Another few seasons like this one, and I'd agree with you. He is still a bargain though for the $3 million he is supposedly going to sign for this year.
Jason MacIsaac 06-24-2004, 09:55 PM It would probably take more then Gomez, Parise and a 1st for Ovechkin since Washington wants Ruutu, Arnason and Chicago's 1st.
Hellsempire 06-25-2004, 11:05 PM and now here is the latest by the NY Post and Mark Everson...
BLACKHAWKS EYEING GOMEZ?
NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports "sources" claims the New Jersey Devils might deal centre Scott Gomez plus their first round pick (22nd overall) to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the 'Hawks first round pick (third overall).
Spector's Note: Can't see that happening, as it would leave the already thin at centre Devils even worse off, unless they could land a suitable replacement via the UFA market. The depth in this year's draft drops off sharply after the first two overall picks and I can't see Lamoriello making that kind of deal
Jared Ramsden 06-26-2004, 12:51 AM Honestly, why would the Devils trade their #1 center? Seriously, these rumors are downright retarded. Devils might move up or down on draft day, but I highly doubt Gomez goes anywhere.

They're not retarded. They're from the Post.
Oh wait...
