Gaborik10 06-23-2004, 08:05 PM Hey guys, what was Lemaire like when it came to appointing the Captain? Who was the Captain on the Devils, Stevens? Did Lemaire seem stingy about one permanent Captain, or did he want to rotate? In Minnesota, he says stuff like having a permanent Captain would limit what he was able to do with that player....
Did Lemaire seem like that over there? Basically, what I'm trying to say is....if x-player appeared, and was the 'right' fit for a captain, the type that would take the Captaincy, not be given it...do you think Lemaire would allow that?
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Classic Devil 06-23-2004, 09:47 PM For a while, it was a rotation if I remember correctly. But by the end 1995, Stevens was the captain. Period.
Gaborik10 06-23-2004, 09:58 PM Hm...What was Lemaire's last year there?

Left after we lost to Ottawa in the first round in 96'

Didn't we miss the playoffs in '96, then lost to the Rangers in '97 before he left after we lost to the Sens in '98? I think...... :dunno:

Ack.. typo. Yeah, we missed the playoffs in 96' and lost to the Rangers (again) in 97'. Sorry bout that. Lemaire left after we lost to Ottawa and "Bench Thrower" Ftorek replaced him.
David Puddy 06-23-2004, 11:00 PM Scott Stevens was named Captain on September 24, 1992. Herb Brooks was Head Coach at the time. However, I believe that the decision would be made, at least in part, by Lou Lamoriello.
I don't know anything about a rotation. I don't remember. It was the first year of black replacing green as a team color. Anybody know who was rotated if the Devils employed that system? Bruce Driver had been Captain in between Stevens and Kirk Muller.

I seem to remember Dowd wearing the C at one point. Might just be faulty memory though, I was only 8. Now that I think about it, too, it doesn't make any sense... he didn't get any real playing time until 96'. I might be remembering that we rotated the assistant captains on a regular basis.

It may have been a pre-season game, or Scott Stevens may have been a scratch.
Here is his playing record during that time:
1992-93 81 of 84 scratched 3 games due to concussion
1993-94 83 of 84 injured for 1 game
1994-95 48 of 48 Played Every Game
1995-96 82 of 82 Played Every Game
1996-97 79 of 82 1 game suspension, 1 healthy and 1 injury scratch
Gaborik10 06-24-2004, 08:19 AM Ok thanks!
GentlemanOfLeisure 06-24-2004, 01:20 PM Nobody but Stevens has wore the C since 1992 for more than a handful of games except for Niedermayer this year. From Lemaire's first to his last game, it was all about Scott Stevens.
