Why didn't we get a pick for losing Niewendyk?

That is a good question. I thought Group III UFA's didn't get compensation, but the Devils get a pick from Nashville for Jim McKenzie. Darrian Hatcher, Teemu Selanne and Brian Leetch also brought teams picks.

Here is the Devils' picks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft:

Round 1: 22nd Overall

Round 2: none

Round 3: 88th Overall

Round 4: none

Round 5: 155th Overall

Round 6: 185th Overall

Round 7: 216th and 217th Overall
Round 7 Notes: Pick 216 - assigned to NEW JERSEY for loss of Group III free agent Jim McKenzie.

Round 8: 250th Overall

Round 9: 282nd Overall

I think Rasmussen is worth a 3rd rounder.

I think Rasmussen is worth a 3rd rounder.definitely. He's a great 4th line center. The way the Devils roll 4 lines, he has a lot of value. Definitely worth a third-round pick.

I wasn't a fan, but then I came around, all hail Rasmussen!

Actually I think Larionov is the reason why we didn't get anything for Nieuwendyk. Generally speaking, you get a pick if you lose a player and don't sign a comparable ($$$$) free agent. N'dyk went for 2 mil, Larionov went for 1.5 mil. Detroit didn't get anything for Fedorov because they signed Hatcher and Whitney.

On the other hand, the Stars get a pick for Hatcher because they didn't sign any comparable free agents, they only signed low paid FAs like Don Sweeney.

Brown and Rasmussen signed for chump change (I think $600K apiece), so they wouldn't affect us getting a pick for Nieuwendyk.
