Fire Sather 06-13-2004, 11:19 AM Ah, one of the best weeks of the year.
Tommarow (Monday) will be my last day of school, ( i always seem to get out the week of the open) and starting Thursday, the US Open.
So, whos everyone got to win?
Mickelson or Davis Love III for me.. a star will win this year, no no names.
go kim johnsson 514 06-13-2004, 05:11 PM overview of the course? advantages and disadvantages.
I'll pick Tiger to be in it every time, but I'm thinking a Euro will win it. Maybe Fredrik Jakobssen or Alex Cejka.
It is a short course with lots of wind. I actually think it is perfect for a guy like Mike Weir (a guy who hits a low ball, but can be deadly with the short irons). The shortness of the course won't help the big hitters, but may be a blessing for Tiger, who can't hit his driver to save his life.
Garcia and Harrington would also be good picks, as they played well in tough, windy conditions today.
RedRumNJD 06-13-2004, 06:15 PM I'll take either Fred Couples or David Toms.
Cayouche5 06-14-2004, 06:03 PM Shigeki Maruyama will win it against the Big Easy
Fire Millen 06-15-2004, 06:01 AM I'll take either Fred Couples or David Toms.
Great Choices. This course wont favor the big hitters. Staying in the fairway is always the key to the US Open. Especially with the amount of rain they've had down there, the rough is gonna be out of control. I like Toms or Weir

The course is playing very dry and fast.
Weir hasn't been playing well of late.

AND I HAVE THE WORST SUNBURN, EVER.

I hope not, I get dis-interested when Tiger is winning.

It;s only uninteresting when he's winning by 5 or more.
Aas long as it's close, even if Tiger wins it's still extremely exciting.

Yeah thats what I meant, when the lead is huge.
That 2000 US Open.. worst ever. First, you cant have the US open at Pebble, and 2, Tiger ruined it.

It was #100.
But to have the US Open at Pebble is almost unfair.
Where is the British open this year?

The Open is usually great at Pebble.
the British is at Royal Troon.
I love the open at Pebble, great course for it. Tiger just played out of his mind that week, it would have happened anywhere. The year Tom Kite won was a GREAT open, with some near no-name getting to like 11 under par before having it all fall apart and finishing at 3 over :)

Who won the last one there (is this the one with the concrete wall that comes into play)? I'm pretty sure they go back to the scene of the crime next year, Carneuskie (bad spelling), where Van de Velde hit 7 on the 72nd hole. Or was that Troon.
Van De Velde was Carnoustie. I believe the wall is the old course at St. Andrews, but another course could have on as well :p

Justin Leonard won the last time they were at Royal Troon.

The Dr. Gil Morgan. decent tour player, he's been great on the Sr. Tour.
Fire Sather 06-16-2004, 12:47 PM Damn, 2010 US Open has just been awarded to pebble.
Its not that I dont like Pebble, I love it.. but I think the Pebble Beach tourny is enough, I like the pinhursts and oakmount hills for the open
Fire Sather 06-16-2004, 12:48 PM Mickelson said the winner this week will probably be around +2.

I say so. This course is playing like links golf in parts, with the overcast skies ands potential fog coming back into play.

Fog and overcast skies is making the course play easier.
It would get much tougher if it was sunny with some wind. It would serve to bake out the greens, making them much harder and faster.

BTW, just looking at the early scores so far, and gadzooks does this look tough. Of the 23 players to have started, not a SINGLE one is under par, and only 3 at even. Should make for a VERY interesting final round.
Also of note is that 8 players have played the 7th hole, and their has been 2 pars, 2 bogeys, 1 double bougey and three "others". Its stroke average (for a PAR 3) is 4.625. This is going to be AWESOME :)

go kim johnsson 514 06-21-2004, 03:02 PM The course got a little TOO hard. The groundscrew didn't do a great job, the greens shouldn't have been nearly as fast as they were, espically on 7. There is no excuse for a mere tap to roll off the green.

Someone wasn't doing their job if they were watering down the greens between groups. It sounds like a bunch of whining by the golfers, but some of them were right.
golfmade 06-21-2004, 08:42 PM While the grounds crew probably could have done a better job, what the hell do you expect when you cut down pretty much every tree the course had... Long Island is already windy as hell, you're going to have fast greens with no protection from the wind.
