TVanek26* 05-30-2004, 08:21 PM I see that Baggio played his last ever game 2 weeks ago and there's nothing about it?I mean this guy was one of the best players ever and even though he had the "miss" he was one of the most dynamic scorers at the world cup...why the lack of love? :dunno:
ParisSaintGermain 05-30-2004, 08:33 PM His last game in San Siro was just the best stage for him to end his great career.
The game in itself was hugely entertaining but it was really impressive to see the whole stadium giving a standing ovation for Il Codino when he was susbtituted 10 minutes from time. Great stuff.
Why the lack of love? well i don't think his career has really matched his great skills and his enormous talent. He is a legend in italy but he isn't associated with any great international success for Italy and while he has played for all the big guns of the Calcio he has spent the last 4 years in teams like Bologna or Brescia which again makes that his retirement went fairly unoticed outside Italy.
He sadi after his last game that he will go hunting in Argentina over the summer to try to deal with the retirement.

well... my first encounter with him was vs. my brazilian team when he missed the extra kick. He's had a good career but I wouldn't say he was one of the best ever.
The Flash 05-30-2004, 11:46 PM Over here in South Korea, there is talk that the new team in Seoul will try and get him to play for them during their innaugural season in the K-League.
Evilo 05-31-2004, 02:12 AM Big ego for much smaller results in the end.
Not one of the best ever IMO.
He was also picked much too soon in the all time draft if you ask me.
Frolov 6'3 05-31-2004, 04:23 AM I always liked him but the fact he failed with AC Milan and Internazionale really hurt his "legend status". He was great during his Fiorentina and Juventus period but the last few years there was hardly any attention for Roberto Baggio, with the exception of Italy.
helicecopter 05-31-2004, 04:56 AM Big ego for much smaller results in the end.
Well, 205 goals in the most defensive league in the world while regularly playing
on 'Bure like knees' and not always as a forward, brought singlehandly Italy to the '94 world cup final (where he played injured), was protagonist in three different world cup ('90, '94, '98),balon d'or in '93... much smaller results? You are enormously overrating his ego!
He was also picked much too soon in the all time draft if you ask me.
Well, maybe some players picked after could have been chosen before him, but looking at others picked before ( Kempes, Bergomi, Rossi..) or others picked in the same 4th round ( Hagi, Cantona, Gascoigne!!!) i think he even didn't get the deserved consideration.
helicecopter 05-31-2004, 05:01 AM well... my first encounter with him was vs. my brazilian team when he missed the extra kick.
Then you had already missed his best version!
Also, he played that game against Brasil through injury.

I really don't understand you. Hagi singlehandly brought Rumania to the '94 WC quarterfinals and has always been a genius on the pitch. Ask Johan Cruijff.

You're right about '94 world cup, he was great there!
If he had usually played that way i would agree with you.
He often made genius' play but was way too egoist on the field, trying too often to do too much. Baggio was much more clever and definitely a better player in my opinion.
I don't think it's coincidence that Hagi in his prime in Italy played for Brescia and never for the main clubs, even if he would have not looked shabby there, of course.
Obviously i'm not saying Hagi sucked..he was a GREAT talent but only sometimes a great player imo.
As for Cruijff, he was a tremendous player but that it's FAR from meaning his opinions are good as well;
For instance, i still remember his arrogance while expressing his certanties about how much better than the opponents his team was, before the Champions league final Barca-Milan. :lol

Cruijff's judgement about a player based on a career of 17 years has 'a little more' value than a simple one-liner like that. Of course we don't have to agree with everything he says but I rather take note of Cruijff's observations than from Pele's.
The thing you say about Hagi that he was way too egoist on the field, trying too often to do too much does also count for Baggio, so I don't get that.
helicecopter 05-31-2004, 07:07 AM I always liked him but the fact he failed with AC Milan and Internazionale really hurt his "legend status". He was great during his Fiorentina and Juventus period...
I agree here.
He was just GREAT with Juventus and Fiorentina; with the latter, especially, he was a joy to watch, perhaps the most entertaining player i've ever watched at the time.
But with Milan he was a huge disappointment, while still pretty young he suddenly lost his acceleration and had problems even playng as a regular there.
When hopes were by then disappearing, he regained his speed for a GREAT season with Bologna, so that he was inevitably called for the '98 world cup. The problem for him and moreover for Italy was that mister phantom DelPiero was unbelievably used as a regular in his place.
As for Inter ( where he went in '99, i think), his chances were hampered by the mutual hatred with M.Lippi but he did well WHEN played, even if slowing down again his pace.
With Brescia he has been surprisingly good until the end of his days as a player, successfully modifying his style because of his reducted dynamism.

Nah, disagree. Baggio was a really clever player.

Somebody who's an egoist can also be very clever.
Evilo 05-31-2004, 10:59 AM I'd pick Cantona way before Baggio.

only in england

Cantona: "No idea, I don't follow soccer anymore."

The end of what?
Of your point?
Which is?
Tricolore#20 05-31-2004, 02:10 PM I watched the last Brescia-Juventus game of this season, and I thought Baggio was brilliant. His set up on Brescia's first goal was incredible. He played his heart out, and Brescia almost took the game. What a way to go out at the Alpi.
Baggio is a legend, his presence will be missed.

It was the end of the interview.
Evilo 05-31-2004, 10:59 PM I'm not bitter.
I just don't see the meaning of your quote since we're talking about Cantona's magical abilities.
I really don't see the link between this and the fact he doesn't follow football anymore.
Frolov 6'3 06-01-2004, 04:01 AM You really don't get it, do you ?
What I found so amazing is that a player, who once has been a professional footballer, didn't follow football anymore. Of course I know you meant his skills but I meant something different with artist. It was just a comment, no idea why you are overreacting.
helicecopter 06-01-2004, 04:04 AM Somebody who's an egoist can also be very clever.
could..but if his egoism on the field prevails, he often won't do the best play available...

I'd pick Cantona way before Baggio.

Have you noticed that Cantona has a cameo in a lot of Nike Soccer commercials? Anyone seen the new one with Brazil vs. Portugal, the "Ole" one. I swore I saw Cantona somewhere next to the tunnel.

yeah, both Cantona and Totti have cameo's in that commercial. Notice that they didn't let him do something athletic though :)
TVanek26* 06-01-2004, 02:01 PM By the way Baggio is a god in Sicily.I go there every summer to visit relatives and walk down the street and the freakin' ice cream shop has Baggio jerseys for sale.Even the pope loves this guy....wasn't mad that Baggio converted to Buddhism but was mad at the free kick miss!
Tricolore#20 06-01-2004, 02:59 PM ehm..wasn't that game played in Brescia??
Yeah maybe you're right. I can't remember the exact details of it, but I remember it was a very emotional game. I thought it might have been in Turin, but of course, I might be wrong.
TheRocket 06-01-2004, 11:26 PM Baggio was one of the best,if not the best....
Taking Cantona over Baggio!?!?!
My reaction to this: :banghead: Open your eyes and watch some games. Cantona was good finisher.Baggio was a second striker, almost playmaker. He did not play deep like Zidane does. His passes were brilliant, his understading of game exceptional, his style of game will never be copied.
His big ego? Oh man, go and read something about the player first, and then come up with something like this……
Belgian Fan 06-02-2004, 12:26 AM Cantona was good finisher.Baggio was a second striker, almost playmaker. He did not play deep like Zidane does.
Am I the only one who doesn't understand what this is supposed to mean

no.
Frolov 6'3 06-02-2004, 03:07 AM Am I the only one who doesn't understand what this is supposed to mean
He meant Baggio was both a scorer and playmaker in contrast to Cantona, so much more complete. However, I'm still investigating the matter about "He did not play deep like Zidane does".
rabi_sultan 06-02-2004, 04:10 AM Have you noticed that Cantona has a cameo in a lot of Nike Soccer commercials? Anyone seen the new one with Brazil vs. Portugal, the "Ole" one. I swore I saw Cantona somewhere next to the tunnel.
Cantona looks like a tramp in that, just my opinion though.
Evilo 06-02-2004, 09:50 AM Actually Cantona was far from a striker. He's like a 9 and a half.
But don't worry Rocket, it's not like your view has any importance.
TheRocket 06-03-2004, 11:18 AM Evilo,
I’m not worried at all. I’m just showing you what BS you are talking about in this thread. ;)
Let me clarify what I said in previous post….Baggio did not play deep behind the strikers like real playmakers do. He is more like Zola and Signori, in football terminology it’s called “second striker” At least I always see and use this term in different soccer forums and was always understood.
Evilo, if you want to say that Cantona was 9 and a half which implies that he was also “second striker”, and then compare his playmaking skills to Baggio’s you will make fool out of yourself. I have been Baggio supporter for 11 years and saw of a lot of Cantona’s matches. They are NOT comparable!
But you were right at one thing, Cantona was an actor….watching how he kicked opposite team’s fan was priceless :lol
Evilo 06-03-2004, 01:27 PM Cantona WAS a 9 and a half, and was more of an impact player day in and day out than Baggio IMO.
To say they're not comparable makes YOU look like the fool.
Belgian Fan 06-03-2004, 01:30 PM Shouldn't we all be above calling each other fools?
Come on now
And FYI, they were both '9.5' players, second strikers or, as the Dutch say it with the best expression I know for this: 'schaduwspitsen' - forwards playing in the shadow of the deep striker
TheRocket 06-03-2004, 05:04 PM Cantona WAS a 9 and a half, and was more of an impact player day in and day out than Baggio IMO.
Ouch, excuse me, you are not even comparing them, you are saying that Cantona was waaaay better than Robby....is that right? Well, now I can easily say that your football knowledge is even worse than my Japanese(I know just one word in it :) )
Let's just take one example. In 1993, Baggio won both Fifa's World player of the Year and European Footballer of the year. What did Cantona win? Yeah you can say that in your opinion he was waaay better than "il Codino",but it is just biased opinion that doesn't prove anything.Look at the given facts, Cantona never reached Baggio's level ;)
Don't be angry at me,face the truth like man :D
Evilo 06-03-2004, 10:49 PM I didn't say Cantona was "way better".
I said I'd pick Cantona "way before" Baggio.
Which means I'd pick Cantona on my team because he's more of a team player, doesn't have to be the lone star.
Cantona acheived less than his potential and still was one of the best players ever to play in the premier league.
helicecopter 06-04-2004, 04:53 AM Another insightful post.

The guy has seven posts and attacks everyone that doesn't have his opinion.
As for my insightful posts, there are hidden below yours of course...
How is it false that Cantona is more of a team player?
He's always has been.
TheRocket 06-04-2004, 04:34 PM "Which means I'd pick Cantona on my team because he's more of a team player, doesn't have to be the lone star."
Now I see that you did not watch many Baggio's matches. He was a GREAT TEAM PLAYER, and when you really want to think about "lone star" think about somebody like Ronaldo or Romario, definetely not Baggio ;) Cantona could not be more of a team player for one simple reason: he was an artist! It's your words not mine ;)
And Evilo, show me your insightful posts where I could see the answer on my question...
What personal awards did Cantona win?
Have I attacked anyone? WHERE???
Take it easy,Evilo.I'm just trying to prove my point and to show how wrong you are about Legendary Baggio. Is it considered to be an attack to prove you wrong?
Legionnaire 06-06-2004, 05:10 AM well... my first encounter with him was vs. my brazilian team when he missed the extra kick. He's had a good career but I wouldn't say he was one of the best ever.
I was at that game
Evilo 06-06-2004, 01:47 PM I'd say it's an attack to say someone is ignorant or doesn't know anything about football if he says he's take Cantona before Baggio.
You say Baggio is more of a team player and you talk about individual awards.
Typical. :shakehead
SwisshockeyAcademy 06-06-2004, 10:30 PM Cantona V Baggio -Who's better? I say we ask Doc Rivers as he seems to have all the answers these days.
