X-SHARKIE 05-20-2004, 08:51 PM Before this season I only saw Goc once on tape. This year I saw him twice with the Cleveland Barons before I saw him in SJ for the playoffs.
Let me tell you, this guy does work hard! Also he was coached very very well. The way he plays the game is awesome. He saved the Sharks butts by reading the play, that McLaren was pinching in and got caught down low. It wouldve been a break away if Goc wasn't back and he played the 1-1 like a vet defensman would. He also is a stud in the face offs. He immedietly because are go to guy on the draws. Marcel also shows some excelent creativness and the want to make the play. He sets up his line mates for some gimme goals, even under pressure he shows some excelent puck poise, and calmy puts it right on the tape. His shot is also nice, has a good back hand, and a nice wrist shot. I dont think I ever seen him take a slap shot. I love his work in the corners. He has excelent positioning on his opponet. I love the way he moves his stick around and takes away much more room on the ice then most NHL players. He gets in lanes very very well. I love how he doesn't just focus on getting the puck and going for it when he's in his own zone. He shows the comitment to go down low and do the dirty work for his team every game. I love it.
Also, I'm now convinced Tim Burke made up that crap about his skating. He's not the smoothest skater but he sure can move quickly. He is a speedy guy. Good first step as well, not Christian Ehrhoff, but he can move.
Also, I said this before, but I think Marcel is almost to smart for him self. He doesn't take the chances offensivley that some guys do with his skills because he's so concerned about playing the system and being back in time for the correct defensive play.
Germany has a stud for there world cup, olypmic teams for years...and My Sharks have a dang good player for the next decade or so :)
Goc is the real deal.
Thank you for this insight of his play in the last few weeks. He played for my team Mannheim, and to be honest, we were not sure about his chances to get himself into the big league.
It's good to hear, that he evidently took some steps forward and showed good hockey. :)
The Sharks should get Dennis Seidenberg too, so there would be no doubt for me for which team I should cheer in the NHL :D
Well, time to plan some trip to California!
zecke26 05-23-2004, 07:34 AM x-sharkie, your insight of the german sharks is always welcome on this board. :handclap:
it's good to read that goc is finally working hard. he has the skills to play NHL, so if he has the work ethic to play NHL...there's not much that could go wrong.
do you think he'll be a regular next season?

I would be shocked if he isn't a regular with Free agency opening up a couple of slots at center Goc could be one of the Sharks top three centers.

sounds extremely good.
what are the chances of ehrhoff to become a regular? i guess they're not that good, eh?

Goc is a lock next year, Ehrhoff is to, Ehrhoff needs to add about 10 pounds of muscle. He got about 41 games this year I believe, he'll be in the top 6 rotation next year, pretty much garunteed.

I like both these guys. Goc has put in his time this year and is now ready for the NHL. A solid season for the Barons. Ehrhoff has been inconsistent at times, but you can tell he has the talent to be good in the NHL. I think this was a big adjustment year for him and he will be a lot better next year. We will miss both here in Cleveland, but wish them well :handclap:

do the sharks make any changes in their defense? otherwise i don't see a reason for your optimism that ehrhoff could be in the top6 rotation. if ehrhoff could improve his play, i could see him as a 6th D next season, but still with some games where he's sitting.

Well, Jason Marshall is going to be gone, I'm pretty sure of that. I'm guessing the 6th spot will be taken by Ehrhoff and Rob Davison.
Sanderson 05-31-2004, 11:31 AM I think only the top 4 is set. There is no way Hannan, McLaren, Rathje and Stuart will leave.
After that it's pretty close. Preissing played himself out of the lineup, same as Ehrhoff. Fahey was never really in the rotation and Davison is a different type of defenseman.
There is no "Pitkanen" who could take his spot, like it happened to Seidenberg.
Ehrhoff made the team out of camp, I see no reason why he shouldn't do the same next season. I think he has a better chance of making the team, than Goc.

seems a no-brainer.

what did they do wrong to play themselves out of line-up?
Fahey was never really in the rotation and Davison is a different type of defenseman.
fahey should be done with the sharks and maybe with the NHL. and davison is another one i don't really see with a NHL future. both sound to me as future europe-players.

pitkanen didn't really take the job away from seidenberg. different style, different skill-level for sure. but the flyers grabbed a lot of Ds during the season, if i remember right. it'll be interesting if he can get a regular spot next season.

maybe the sharks sign a FA-defender? but it's more likely that they will sign one or two forwards, right?

Pressing looked injured & out of place in the playoffs.
Fahey had pneumonia during training camp and never got on track after that. He will be traded and has a future in the NHL.
Davison will be back, he is a very solid D-man and no way the Sharks let him go anywhere.
Ehrhoff was inconsistent and that's why he was sent to the AHL so he could get more ice time rather than sit in the press box.
The Sharks probably won't be signing anyone at all (except their own RFAs). No one will be coming to play D from another team, someone from within the org will be given a chance.
Sanderson 06-01-2004, 06:30 AM There are 14 to 15 forwards on the Sharks roster, who would have played before Goc, if it weren't for injuries. He played excellent, but the forwards are still there.
I think the chance is bigger that the RFAs und UFAs are resigned, than a new d-man is signed.
Pitkanen did take a away Seidenbergs rosterspot. Both are offensive-minded defensemen and one of them has clearly more talent.
If it weren't for Pitkanen, Seidenberg and Vandermeer would have been the sixth and seventh d-men on the roster. With Pitkanen playing more like Seidenberg and Vandermeer having the better second half last season, there was no place for him.
The changes were made later on, when two or three defensemen were injured.
My point with Ehrhoff and Seidenberg was, that San Jose has no potential Franchise-defenseman coming in next season.

The only player who could have had a chance besides Goc would be Zalesak. But there is no way the Sharks would put Zalesak over Goc in the playoffs. The Sharks are set on D with a very solid top 4 and 7 guys fighting for the last 3 spots (Pressing, Ehrhoff, Davison, Fahey, Carle, Gorges, Murray). RFAs will be signed but the UFAs won't be. Damphousse has sold his house in SJ. Ricci is too slow to play on the third line, would be too expensive for a fourth liner, and his body is showing signs of any aging player. Harvey is a great guy who should be brought back but it looks like he wants more ice time and he will have to sign elsewhere to get it. Out of the 3 UFAs the best chance is that Harvey comes back.
Next year the team is looking like (not in any order),
LW
Michalek
Ekman
Thornton
Zalesak
C
Marleau
McCauley
Goc
Brown
Smith
RW
Sturm
Korky
Cheechoo
Dimatrakos
Parker
D
Stuart
Hannan
McLaren
Rathje
Pressing
Ehrhoff
Davison
G
Nabakov
Toskala
Sanderson 06-02-2004, 07:02 AM Want I meant is, that Goc wasn't supposed to play in the playoffs although there were some injuries. He came in when more and more forwards got injured.
You never know. After the playoffs he had Damphousse might return and Ricci brings leadership to the team. I'm not sure the Wilsons are ready to give up on them.

It's not that the Wilsons are giving up on Ricci he jsut would cost too much to keep as a fourth line center. Damphousse just sold his home in San Jose so that isn't a good sign, plus he told one of th Canadian papers that he would be willing to comeback to Montreal for a lower salary so when you add both things together he probably won't be coming back. Ricci would be back if he is willing to take a major pay cut.
Sanderson 06-03-2004, 02:27 AM Well, newspapers don't always tell the whole truth. Damphousse also said, that San Jose is the first team he will talk to.
All three might leave, but you never know what the management wants...
