Does anyone here know how the WHA2 is going?
Has anyone seen a game? What's it like?
What's the calibre of play? What is the "game experience" like (promotions, atmosphere, etc?)
I heard awhile ago that they were losing money fast...

As a former employee of a WHA2 team, I guess I can tell you.
The league changed names recently into the Eastern Hockey League and is trying to poach some of the teams from the SEHL. Miami is suspended for one season, while Huntsville and Winston-Salem are now in the EHL.
Money was and is lost hand over fist, since one guy owned four of the six teams and he had trouble with his bills, and still does. He is looking to sell all his teams except Orlando.
Game experience varied on where you saw a game. Jax and Orlando was top-notch for a minor league, while the smaller arenas were just ok.
Quality of play was surprisingly good. Some of the players were at ECHL level talent, but most were are the UHL, CHL level. There was no red-line so the play was wide open and fast. There was also very little clutching and grabbing, and fighting wasnt as prevalent as one would think.

Thanks for all this information, Mark!
I'm just curious - what type of employee were you? A player or something else?
Don't have to answer if you don't want to.
Thanks again!

I was the Director of Communications for the Miami Manatees. I also did community relations and was the play-by-play guy for the home and away games.
They changed names because the former President of the WHA2 left to go to the WHA and it wasnt a friendly split. The owner of the league was going to change names, and the WHA requested that they change as well. That is th eofficial version.
Time will tell if the WHA gets off the ground.

I think the WHA is a total joke. They're taking all of the prospects and players with talent. I'm just glad that they haven't gotten their hands on lehtonen.
