ANAHEIM, Calif. (CP) - The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have signed University of Maine forward Dustin Penner to a three-year contract.
The 21-year-old native of Winkler, Man., had 11 goals and 12 assists in 43 games with the Black Bears this season. He helped the Black Bears advance to the NCAA championship game, scoring the game-winning goal against Boston College in the semifinals.
The 6-4, 230-pounder was awarded the University of Maine's Jack Semler Award, given to the team's most improved player.
23 points in 43 games doesn't scream "star" to me, but he is huge after all. If he can play and hit then he's just what we need.

Ya he's a bit of a crap shoot but who knows what you'll have after a couple of years in the minors. Ducks have nothing to lose by giving him a shot.
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-12-2004, 03:21 PM Here's his profile (http://www.goblackbears.com/hockeym/bios/penner.html). Doesn't say a hell of a lot.

Hockeyfan02 05-12-2004, 03:34 PM 6-4, 230. A forward with size is what we need (not saying hes going to play right away, I doubt he does). Good signing, guys like him are worth a shot at least.
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-12-2004, 03:40 PM Thanks. So, he redshirted last season, and before that he was in the Dakota hinterlands somewhere playing hockey with Russel Crowe.
He must be pretty damn impressive to go from nowhere to Maine to an NHL contract in essentially one season. Has anyone seen him play?

Yes, quite a bit. What would like to know about him?
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-12-2004, 03:50 PM Is he any good? How does he play? Does he have any speed?
Oilers Chick 05-12-2004, 03:59 PM Is he any good? How does he play? Does he have any speed?
He's not bad. I see him being used in a checking role situation than anything else. His size is by far is greatest asset. He's a strong individual who is hard to move off the puck and he's good around the net and along the boards. Plays the body quite well and has good hands. His skating is ok...average. He's not fast but not slow as a snail either. He competes hard and plays with a good amount of intensity.
I hope this helps.
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-12-2004, 04:37 PM How does he compare to Marc Chouinard?
McDonald19 05-12-2004, 07:56 PM another future third liner...well at least if Murray was going to sign another forward for the system he was smart enough to get one who is 6'4...booger, lets hope he isn't as soft as Marc Chouinard.

He must be pretty damn impressive to go from nowhere to Maine to an NHL contract in essentially one season. Has anyone seen him play?I saw Penner play 35+ times for Maine this year and his upside is huge. He has great hands and made more than one d man look stupid this year with moves he put on them and around the net he has a great touch. He is very smart and is dominant on the boards cycling the puck and knows how to use his body to protect the puck not to mention his 20 foot reach :D His skating has improved alot and continued to improve throughout the year he's not the fastest guy on the ice,but he's not a slug either. The biggest thing he needs to improve on is his physical play when he doesn't have the puck he will throw the body around, but he needs to be more consistent doing it.
I'm really liking our group of foward prospects ... we have a good mix of possible scorers, a couple big bodies, some future role players, etc.. But when are we gonna start signing some promising young blueliners?
lux_interior 05-13-2004, 01:00 AM I saw Penner play 35+ times for Maine this year and his upside is huge.
At 6-4 230, I think his backside is probably huge too. You know, screening the goalie. :D
Bobby Ryan Getzlaf 05-13-2004, 01:03 AM BM's done well with college kids. Kunitz was great in Cincy this year, Glencross did well in limited play, and now we sign Penner, who could be a very valuble third liner in the future.
He's big, and I like that, and it looks like he's not useless offensively, either. For some reason, he reminds me of Mike Leclerc, mainly in the sense that Leclerc wasn't considered to be a good NHLer, and now he's a solid third liner.
Randall Graves* 05-13-2004, 02:55 AM Woohoo another third line prospect, we only have 17 now!
cheesymc 05-13-2004, 03:29 AM You know, I actually think Chourinard was pretty useful. He was really picking up his physical hitting, and was solid on faceoffs. Now hes getting a bigger role in Minny. I think hes capable of a 12 goal 20 assit season while providing 2 way play. Sure he isnt the toughest guy out there, but maybe he can learn to be as he gets older and stronger. Remember Mark Janssen, he was a checker first and then became a really good fighter (i remember him getting a cheap hit from a player and he really beat his arse). Even never becomes a physical player, hes a useful player at least.
cheesymc 05-13-2004, 03:35 AM The defenseman Prestin seems more like what ducks needed. He had a +34 or something and lead the team in PIM!
Hopefully Penner is just underdeveloped and has a high ceiling cause his numbers are subpar for a 2nd tier college club...
Hockeypuck 05-13-2004, 09:23 AM Hopefully Penner is just underdeveloped and has a high ceiling cause his numbers are subpar for a 2nd tier college club...Maine is far from a second tier college team.
cheesymc 05-13-2004, 11:26 AM Not, Maine, but the Junior college he attended MSU-Bottineau. I think he has like 3 yrs at Maine so 11 goals isnt so outstanding
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-13-2004, 11:32 AM It looks like he only played the one season at Maine, this past season.
Hockeypuck 05-13-2004, 12:04 PM Not, Maine, but the Junior college he attended MSU-Bottineau. I think he has like 3 yrs at Maine so 11 goals isnt so outstandingHe played 1 year at MSU-Bottineau which is pretty much a club team and he played 1 year at Maine. He was a great find for Maine and i'm dissappointed to see him leave because he would have had a great year this coming season in my opinion. His line with Jankus and Hamilton was by far and away Maine's best line during the NCAA's and he was a big reason for it.
cheesymc 05-13-2004, 10:07 PM Tell me about it.... John Erksine!! Commodore hates the ducks.... we need a player like John to had Dallas and beat the heck out of Pri-Modano
