AHL announces suspensions

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Hamilton Bulldogs forward Alexander Perezhogin has been suspended for the remainder of the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs and the entire 2004-05 American Hockey League season as a result of his actions in an April 30, 2004, game against the Cleveland Barons.

Additionally, Cleveland defenseman Garrett Stafford has been suspended for six (6) games for his actions in the same game. Because the Barons have been eliminated from the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs, Stafford will serve his suspension at the start of the 2004-05 regular season.

The suspensions are the result of a thorough and comprehensive review of AHL Game #E-5, the fifth game of the North Division semifinal playoff series between Hamilton and Cleveland at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ont.

Perezhogin suspension is ok, but Stafford's is a joke. Six games for missing a baseball swing is very light.

I agree with Perezhogin's suspension, but I think Stafford should have gotten a stiffer suspension. Afterall, it takes two. ;)

You would be correct if that were the case, but it's not. Watch the video, in no way is Stafford's swing a 2 handed baseball swing. His one hand is on the butt end of the stick and the other is almost squarely in the middle. Think about it... if the Bertuzzi thing never happened and if Perezhogin hadn't of retaliated and we didn't have all this attention and controversy, do you think the result would have been any different? No... even if he did swing at Perezhogin on purpose... in any other game he would have gotten a match penalty and a 6 to 10 game suspension... the same as what he got now... and no one would be talking about it.

I think the problem is most people think Perezhogin's suspension is too long... but, that's doesn't mean Stafford's is too short.
