slats432 05-05-2004, 08:14 PM This Canadian team has done nothing to impress me. They are going to be in tough with any of the top teams in the tourney. Czechs beat them handily and then were ousted by a decent but not a top echelon US squad(And a hot goalie).
Prediction 3-2 Finland.
tylerr 05-05-2004, 08:37 PM 5-3 Canada, someones needs to root for Canada. :)
Edler Statesman* 05-05-2004, 08:55 PM Matt Cooke with a hat trick, Heatley with 8 assists
15-4 Canada
Jarkko Ruutu fights Roberto Luongo
Ocelot 05-05-2004, 08:58 PM 5-1 Canada.
3:2 Finland
Goals: Scott Niedermeyer, Morrow
Jokinen2, Nummelin
Tuggy 05-05-2004, 09:35 PM Canada will play their best game of the tourney!
3-1 Canada! Heats will pot a pair!
Bud The Spud* 05-05-2004, 10:10 PM 4-2 Canada
Raimo Sillanpää 05-06-2004, 03:10 AM i'm also inclined towards a low scoring game. 2-1, 3-1 come to mind but I dont see either team as being better than the other by a space of 2 goals. A lot depends on how well Luongo and Noronen play..
2-1 to either side.
Pekka Lampinen 05-06-2004, 03:53 AM When the CZE-CAN game was nearing its end, I was happy with the upcoming result in the sense that Canada seemed like a more suitable opponent for Finland, but just as soon as the game ended, the painful memories since 1993 flowed to my mind and I realized "No, wait... it's Canada!" I've been hammering the panic button for the last two days, still not over the defeat in Lillehammer.
I hardly see Finland scoring three goals, only Noronen can save the day.
Hans Moleman 05-06-2004, 04:15 AM I'm a Finnish Canadian so when these games come up i'm always torn, but whomever wins i'll be happy for, and hope they take gold.
Marksman 05-06-2004, 09:22 AM Finland 3 (from Hagman Viuhkola and Niinimaa) - Canada 2 (from Niinimaa and Briere) :D
Canada 2 (from Niinimaa and Briere) :D
I Think it will be Niinimaa and Niinimaa...

GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 11:52 AM The 1st period is over: FIN leads 2-0 vs. CAN...
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:10 PM Noronen is alone out there... Tighter defense!!!!
Noronen is now more then 7 periods without a goal against him!
2nd period starts with a good glove save by Luongo and 2 minutes penalty for Matt Cooke...
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:15 PM 2-1 (24:27) Heatley (Briere/5-3)
Goalie Terrorizer 05-06-2004, 12:16 PM 2-1 Heatley

GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:25 PM 2-2
Bouwmeester PP
First Scorerpoint for Bouwmeester in the tournament...
And now 2 minutes for Eric Brewer!
Edit: A few seconds later 2 minutes for Scott Niedermayer for cross-checking! Now nearly 1:20 minutes 5-3 for FIN !!!
Predatore 05-06-2004, 12:26 PM seriously, how can an experienced and great defenseman like Niedermayer take such a foolish penalty..
mikkoz 05-06-2004, 12:27 PM First Scorerpoint for Bouwmeester in the tournament...
And now 2 minutes for Eric Brewer!
5-3 pp Niedermayer 2 min
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:30 PM :amazed: Luongo this season is AWESOME !!!
BTW, Canada is playing in full strength...
HAWKSWINHAWKSWIN 05-06-2004, 12:31 PM 2-2
Bouwmeester PP

SergeiK 05-06-2004, 12:37 PM Second line with Hentunen-Kapanen-Pärssinen in offence has been surprisingly good.
Noronen hasn`t been too solid tonight.
wilka91* 05-06-2004, 12:37 PM Luongo is too good :banghead:
Allowed 6 goals to Czechs
mikkoz 05-06-2004, 12:39 PM 3-2 Niemi
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:40 PM 39. Minute: 3-2 Finland! Anti-Jussi Niemi...
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 12:40 PM AJ Niemi has done it!! 3-2!
Niemi has been the most solid d-man on our team
Predatore 05-06-2004, 12:41 PM Niemi - can you spell UNDERRRRATED? :)
This will be a thriller to the end..
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:42 PM Officially the goal goes to Petteri Nummelin...
Predatore 05-06-2004, 12:43 PM Noronen grrrrrrr :( 3-3
EDIT: never mind, the puck was deflected off Janne N
mikkoz 05-06-2004, 12:43 PM 3-3 Brewer
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 12:43 PM 3-3 Brewer. Slapshot from blueline.
Noronen sucks tonight.
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 12:44 PM What a hammer from Eric Brewer (but Noronen looks again not so good)! Assisted by Dan Briere... For him first Scorerpoint, too!
Edit: End of the 2nd period!
KungFuPenguin 05-06-2004, 12:45 PM This game rocks.
3-3, Brewer with the big gun.
Gabriel Knight 05-06-2004, 12:47 PM Does it change anything that there were 2 pucks when Canada scored the goal. Is there some kind of procedure when that happens?
s7ark 05-06-2004, 12:48 PM I can't believe I am stuck at work instead of watching this game... It sounds awesome...
slats432 05-06-2004, 12:51 PM I can't believe I am stuck at work instead of watching this game... It sounds awesome...
Go to the Oilers board...there is a link to an internet feed. Thanks to Jussi.
s7ark 05-06-2004, 12:52 PM Enough mistakes for Janne... Me thinks that if Finland somehow wins it he will be benched, even though he has many points. He is bigger danger to the team than opponents on a regular game.
I haven't seen the goal but how can you fault a guy for it deflecting off him? that happens 100 times a game? This time it happened to go in.
I love Janne, enuf with the Janne bashing! ;)
s7ark 05-06-2004, 12:57 PM Well... 100 isn't far enough from the amount of terrible mistakes Janne does in a game...
Hey man he played for my Oilers for a long time and we love him here. His defense wasn't great but it was average or above and he sure can rack up the points...
Maybe he has regressed since leaving Edmonton?
Had to edit for the KISSING thing. That was funny man. LOL
I have a few chick friends who would love to be up in that tree with him. I guess they should be jealous of me now.
mikkoz 05-06-2004, 01:04 PM 4-3 Finland Salo

Predatore 05-06-2004, 01:05 PM unbelievable goal :) Stuff like that doesn't happen, except for in this year's tournament :)
KungFuPenguin 05-06-2004, 01:06 PM That was one weird goal.
Murray :shakehead
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 01:07 PM What a curious goal...
Glen Murray falls into Luongo and the puck spins into the goal!

Oil_in_my_veins 05-06-2004, 01:30 PM the refs are brutual.
big non calls for both sides.
they're letting lots of things go: high stickings (drawing blood), muggings.
hopefully NHL refs at the World Cup this summer.
LoudmouthHemskyFan#2 05-06-2004, 01:31 PM If the game does go into a shootout...what is everyone's shootout line up with they were the coach..?

Only 10 minutes, and then Penalty-shots...
psycho_dad 05-06-2004, 01:36 PM Sucks really. The 5-3 PP goal of Finland was a clear goal. Refs mistake.

Padawan 05-06-2004, 01:49 PM Congrats Canada. Noronen was awful today but Canada was better in every category.
Gabriel Knight 05-06-2004, 01:49 PM Damn.
This wouldn't be nearly as annoying if Finland wouldn't have gotten that goal on PP which didn't count.
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 01:49 PM is the shootout will there be after the ot or they will have a breack

Noronen was Canada`s best player
mikkoz 05-06-2004, 01:50 PM What a shot. And thats all i got to say.
Oil_in_my_veins 05-06-2004, 01:52 PM Shot behind the blueline and no traffic front of the net.

s7ark 05-06-2004, 01:53 PM W00t!! Heatley!!!

slats432 05-06-2004, 01:53 PM I just wanted to give a big thanks to Jussi for providing a link to the internet feed. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 01:54 PM Best players for Finland this game:
...Noronen (He was left alone)Yeah, he just allowed three soft goals including game winner in OT.
If Noronen was one of the best players, rest of the team must be pretty crappy.
Gabriel Knight 05-06-2004, 01:56 PM I look forward to a probable exciting North American Final.
Slovakia > Canada
Oil_in_my_veins 05-06-2004, 01:57 PM How about Smyth? Has he done anything?
he was creating chances. getting his nose dirty in front of the net and in the corners.
he should definitely get a chance to make the World Cup team. whether he makes it or not will be another thing.
on the other hand, Heatley is a lock for sure.
GermanDevil 05-06-2004, 01:58 PM GO CANADA GO!

s7ark 05-06-2004, 01:58 PM As they were.
I think Summanen might do better next year, I really liked this team, very well composed. But why no Hentunen in the final minutes? :dunno: did he get injured?
LOL, dude what is the obsession with Hentunen?
Zero and Hentunen sitting in a tree... ;)
Really though I know nothing of this guy, can you give me any details?
Panopticon 05-06-2004, 02:00 PM Thank you, Mr. Noronen. Thanks you oh so very much.
Oil_in_my_veins 05-06-2004, 02:00 PM I would love to see Kurri behind the Oilers bench in some capacity...
maybe he could actually turn Rita into a good player
HellsBells 05-06-2004, 02:01 PM Slovakia > Canada
We'll see about that. At least we know:
Canada > Finland
Panopticon 05-06-2004, 02:01 PM LOL, dude what is the obsession with Hentunen?
Did you see him out there... he was the only one playing as well as he could.
Frogurt 05-06-2004, 02:02 PM I feel for the Finnish fans. They really deserved to win, Canada came out flat.
But as a Canadian fan... Very happy they won. Gotta pick up their game if they want to go any further though.
Bring on Slovakia/Switzerland!
s7ark 05-06-2004, 02:02 PM Di you see him out there... he was the only one playing as well as he could.
No I couldn't watch the game and I haven't seen any Finland games so far this year. Any details on this guy would be great :D
Oil_in_my_veins 05-06-2004, 02:02 PM Thank you, Mr. Noronen. Thanks you oh so very much.
Markkanen definitely would have given Canada a harder game.
Hans Moleman 05-06-2004, 02:04 PM Well it didn't matter who won since I root for both teams equally, I just wish they could have faced each other in the semis or the final, oh well, go Canada! I hope they win gold.
Finland looked pretty impressive in this WC IMO, looking forward to seeing them at the WCup.
s7ark 05-06-2004, 02:05 PM Well... There were reasons why he was consistantly being marked by Canada's best defensive players... He is a player who can step up and make goals from nothing, and usually in clutch situations. He has been one of the best players for Finland this tournament.
Cool , how old is he? Where does he play and what kind of numbers has he put up there?
Predatore 05-06-2004, 02:06 PM s7ark,

He's like 29 and played for Nashville last I heard. Numbers were hardly impressive. Back in Europe somewhere now.
Gabriel Knight 05-06-2004, 02:09 PM We'll see about that. At least we know:
Canada > Finland
Debatable. Very debatable.
Predatore 05-06-2004, 02:09 PM He's like 29 and plays for Nashville. Numbers were hardly impressive.
he played for Nashville 2-3 years ago :)
glimradnor 05-06-2004, 02:11 PM he played for Nashville 2-3 years ago :)
Yeah, I saved before I thought about it. I edited my initial post.
s7ark 05-06-2004, 02:14 PM Thanks for all the info everyone. Very nice :D
It sounds like Finland put up a great fight and I applaud your team, your fans and your country.
I look forward to your team in the World Cup when you have a complete roster of all your superstars. You will have a very scary team...
And just an extra note, you Finland fans have been nothing but class on this thread. It is very nice to see that kind of gentlemenly conduct on the net these days.
Thanks again.
I hope to see you in the finals at the World Cup against Canada.
s7ark 05-06-2004, 02:15 PM Debatable. Very debatable.
Don't listen to Garfield, He trolls wherever he goes except for his beloved Flames board.
Finland has a great team and will be contenders for the World Cup for sure.
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 02:18 PM Finland has a great team and will be contenders for the World Cup for sure.Only if Team Finland get some decent goalie. Miikka Kiprusoff? Pasi Nurminen?
s7ark 05-06-2004, 02:19 PM Only if Team Finland get some decent goalie. Miikka Kiprusoff? Pasi Nurminen?
Hey don't discount Jussi, He played well in the NHL this year. But Kipper might be your best bet, he is on FIRE right now
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 02:22 PM Hey don't discount Jussi, He played well in the NHL this year. But Kipper might be your best bet, he is on FIRE right nowMarkkanen fell as third goalie during this tournament behind Noronen and Frederik Norrera.
Padawan 05-06-2004, 02:23 PM Markkanen definitely would have given Canada a harder game.
Pfft! Markkanen has been ice cold in the games he has played between the pipes with Team Finland lately. I was torn when I though Finnish goalie situation. If Noronen would have playing in a good day then there should be no opposition but he has been quite moody. Therefore Norrena wouldn't be a bad choice at all.
This time Noronen was truly awful.
SChan* 05-06-2004, 02:23 PM I doubt the Americans can work their magic again against sweden. I don't think there will be an north american final.
Jyssy 05-06-2004, 02:24 PM Same problem as always, Finland is crappy at tight games and must win games. And as always, Finland does not have a goalie who makes the big saves. Why is it so hard to keep the lead!!?? Finland-Sweden 2002, bronce medal game, 3-0 to 3-5, 2001 WC final, Finland leads by 2 goals before third period. What happens? Czechs win at overtime. 2003 Finland-Sweden QF 5-1 to 5-6!! And now, Finland leads by, what happens? We dont have winning culture as for example, Canada, Czechs and Sweden.

Legolas 05-06-2004, 02:26 PM Nice win by Canada but they need to bring their level up a few notches now that the semis are here.
Finland should have an excellent team at the World Cup. Koivu is playing better than I have ever seen right now and even though he didn't do much this year, Selanne is still dangerous and when he's playing with Koivu, he's a much different player. Best of all, Kipprusoff looks unbelievable right now...
Padawan 05-06-2004, 02:29 PM Only if Team Finland get some decent goalie. Miikka Kiprusoff? Pasi Nurminen?
Kiprusoff, Nurminen and Lehtonen. I think that's the trio in the World Cup. I sincerely hope that Noronen won't be there since we have better options. At the World Championships tournament Lehtonen's and Kiprusoff season continues in North America and Nurminen was injured. Really bad luck in goalie department imo.
SergeiK 05-06-2004, 02:32 PM Kiprusoff, Nurminen and Lehtonen.
How could I forgot Lehtonen?
I truly hope that Noronen played himself tonight out of Team Finland for permanent basis.
Legolas 05-06-2004, 02:35 PM Koivu showed this year that he can mark the opposing team's best centre while still creating offence on his own...it would be great to see him matched up with the numbers ones from other teams. There aren't as many strict checking lines at the World Cup so we hopefully will get to see top forwards and d-men against each other regularly.
Jussi 05-06-2004, 02:36 PM I just wanted to give a big thanks to Jussi for providing a link to the internet feed. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
I can't take full credit for that since Predatore supplied the link in this thread first. I only decided to spread the joy since those Swedes are so damn lazy and slow.

Hey, don´t be so bitter! ;)
At least you won the Euro Hockey Tour.
HellsBells 05-06-2004, 02:39 PM Debatable. Very debatable.
Of course. But Slovakia > Canada is not very arguable. Hypocrite.
HellsBells 05-06-2004, 02:50 PM Don't listen to Garfield, He trolls wherever he goes except for his beloved Flames board.
Finland has a great team and will be contenders for the World Cup for sure.
How is that considered trolling ?? The guy said that Slovakia is better than Canada. I respond by saying that Canada is better than Finland. How is one a troll and not the other ? I'm allowed to disagree with someone saying Slovakia is better than Canada. He never gave any points to back up his case so why should I ??
Finland IMO is not a contender for the World Cup. They are a team that can upset because they play a physical style and Kiprusoff should be able to steal a game or two. That said, they are nowhere near Canada when it comes to the World Cup.
Predatore 05-06-2004, 02:52 PM bla bla, no trolling in this thread so far, and there will be no either, and nor will there be any discussion about trolling, stay on topic people please.

Congrats Canada btw.
Jyssy 05-06-2004, 02:56 PM That said, they are nowhere near Canada when it comes to the World Cup.
Totally agreed, Finland IMO is not in top 6 when best hockey countries are ranked. Why didnt Finland get star players from NHL to this tournament? Because there isnt any star players! Something is really wrong with Finnish ice-hockey. IMO Finland cant even dream about winning World Cup, World Championship gold or Olympic Gold for at least 10 years.
Predatore 05-06-2004, 03:02 PM I somewhat agree with you Jyssy. But you say "There isnt any star players". Was the situation that much better 5-10 years ago? IMO you guys have had two elite offensive players in Saku and Selänne, and the situation is pretty much the same now.. although Selänne's production has definitely decreased in the NHL.
If anything I'd say that the future looks rather bright for Finnish hockey, just have to be more patient. You are producing more quality prospects than ever and in 4-6 years the Finnish team could be much more competitive, and not only a team with superb hardworking players, but with some good offensive flair as well. You will be set in goal, you'll have that superb defenseman in Pitkänen and if even half of your prospects among forwards will develop as expected you'll have some serious talent up front as well.
In 5-7 years Finland's team should be superior to Sweden's (on the paper). While you have had some strong years since 1980, we have had some tough ones .. although talent wise there seems to be quite a few gifted ones born 1985-1988. But those will take time to develop while Ruutu, Lehtonen etc will be further in their development and better players.

I agree 100%. Finland's best players are not quite developed enough to win these tournaments. I defenitely see them as a contender in 4-5 years. Ruutu, Pitkanen, Lehtonen may well be the best in the world at their positions in the future.

Jesus christ. Finland was dominating that game so how can you say that? We dont need star players it seems, we can still dominate the stars with our euro forwards and d-men. Only thing where finland lost today was in goal...Noronen let in two softies. In any other way, Finland was ABSOLUTELY dominant.

No doubt the teams out there today are competetive. Finland could have easily won that game.
We are talking about the World Cup rosters. When Canada adds Sakic, Iginla, Bertuzzi (questionable), Thornton, Lecavalier, St. Louis, Marleau, Blake, Pronger, Brodeur, Foote, Peca etc..., Canada will not be dominated at all by the Finns. That's what we are saying. The Finns goaltending will be better but I still don't think they can medal at the World Cup unless Kiprusoff steals a couple games.
During the mid-late 90's he was one of the national teams most efficient scorers before gotten ignored and put into depth positions by Aravirta. Summanen brings him up again and once again he looks brilliant.
Who are you talking about?

I was talking about today. And today we should have won. But thats hockey, especially in a tournament. Finland was the better team but Luongo beat Noronen.
You are talking about world cup, and making statements that Canada will not be dominated. Maybe not, maybe they will, that remains to be seen. I was talking about today, and today Canada was dominated. Anyone who saw the game knows that.
If you want to discuss about how great Canadian hockey is, I know exactly how deep it goes. I have lived in both countries and both have great hockey culture but Canada has 6 times more people. Yeah, I do know that Canada is the #1 hockey country in the world, but that has nothing to do with the game today. Where Finland was dominant, was robbed a powerplay goal, and lost eventually due bad goaltending.

Relax. You were the one saying "je*us chr*st guys" becuse everyone was saying that the Finns are not contenders for the World Cup. So WE were talking about the World Cup and YOU were talking about today. Talk about getting defensive.
During the mid-late 90's he was one of the national teams most efficient scorers before gotten ignored and put into depth positions by Aravirta. Summanen brings him up again and once again he looks brilliant.
What are you talking about? Hentunen was allways one of the favorite players to Aravirta. Hentunen was so horrible later years but this tournament he was very good. I wouldn`t take Hentunen this tournament those what he was proven later years.

Look, I was under the impression that this is the "world championships" > WC QF: May 6 GDT - Canada vs. Finland (5-4 OT) thread, not the WORLD CUP thread.
If you guys are discussing WORLD CUP teams and games here, then you are WAY off subject

Whatever. :shakehead
And by the way, the game was over so we can discuss anything regarding Canada & Finland, that includes their next possible matchup in the World Cup.
Leafer4Life 05-06-2004, 04:45 PM WOOOO-HOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was an exciting game for the most part, when Canada came back that is. WAY TO GO MR HEATLEY!!!!!!!!!!! NICE WINNING OT GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO CANADA GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Moving on baby! :handclap:

No, in this thread we should discuss this particular game. Hence the topic. Got it?

Sweden beat Canada with that type of players plus Mario Lemiuex 5-2 2002. So it's not a given that you would beat the finns that easy even with those players.

You can't tell me what I can and cannot discuss. The game was over and there were others discussing this with me. Got it ??

Never said it was a gimme. Just saying that Canada will improve a lot more than Finland will when the World Cup rosters are set.
psycho_dad 05-06-2004, 05:52 PM Never said it was a gimme. Just saying that Canada will improve a lot more than Finland will when the World Cup rosters are set.
I could talk about Nagano, but this thread really is about what happened today, Got it? How much more simple do you need it? LOOK AT THE TOPIC!
Canada won, they were lucky and finnish goaltending sucked in few key moments. Finland was the dominating force today but it makes no difference in who goes to semifinals.
If you are too simple to get a very subtle point....
This was a discussion about ONE (1) hockey game. Not about "world ranking".
Predatore 05-06-2004, 06:01 PM The discussion about World Cup started because of Finland's defeat today and Jyssy's (and others) comments about Finland's future among the elite countries. I don't think it is crazy to analyse teams/players/next coming events in a GDT, after the game (especially as nobody seems interested in discussing the current game anymore ;)).
But hey, if some of you posters think this is out of this world I can split the thread, starting a new thread with Jyssy's post.
psycho_dad 05-06-2004, 06:04 PM Yeah I think it should be separated. Jyssy is the traditional Finn, turning his back on a losing moment.
I wish we could keep the GDT on normal GDT terms and not "what happens in 2034 olympics" or whatever. Jyssy I have no respect for.
Predatore 05-06-2004, 06:13 PM psycho_dad,
Grr, I tried splitting it, but it seems the thread is too big. I could only list the first 100 posts or so in the "Split Thread Feature". So I couldn't select the posts that I wanted to move. *sorry* :)
Kronblom 05-06-2004, 06:44 PM Yeah because that is so so important :banghead:
That was just sarcasm if you didn´t get it... :banghead:
Jyssy 05-06-2004, 06:53 PM Jyssy is the traditional Finn, turning his back on a losing moment.
I have been sceptic all along, you seem to know lot about me.
Sampe 05-06-2004, 06:58 PM "Dominance" is an awfully strong word to describe a game as even as this one IMO. Finland might have outplayed Canada by a small margin, but it was hardly dominating. I mean, just look at how we "dominated" in the OT...
Anyways, it was a good game where goaltending turned out to be the deciding factor. The last starter we had who *didn't* blow his chance in the World Championships was...let's see...Ari Sulander in 1998? Or was Myllys the starter that year? Well, in any case Sulander blew it in '99 (while backup Miikka Kiprusoff didn't) and '00 (along with Vesa Toskala, while backup Pasi Nurminen didn't). Then in '01 it was Kiprusoff's turn (while backup Nurminen played solid) and in '02 it was Markkanen despite his impressive stats (frankly, they lied). And last year...you guessed it. Nurminen and Hurme *both* blew it.
So many NHL goaltenders and Jarmo Myllys still remains our finest goalie in clutch situations?!
aonez 05-06-2004, 07:06 PM Why on earth was not Fredrik Norrena in the net? I can not in my wildest dream see that Noronen would be better than Fredrik Norrena. With Norrena in the net I think Finland would have gone through this round.
psycho_dad 05-06-2004, 07:15 PM I have been sceptic all along, you seem to know lot about me.
Enough about you. I know people who are just like you.
Pessimists never have to feel bad...they are either right, or they are proven wrong but nobody remembers it at that time so they celebrate among the optimists and winners.
I only respect people who are behind their favourites in winning and losing. Anyone else is just an empty jacket, and can ******* **f. Such people are not usefull in any aspect of life. They just waste oxygen.

Critisism is forbidden? I am finnish and proud of it! I am just concerned about our hockey! Does that make me less patriotic?

Predatore 05-06-2004, 07:33 PM as evident, no one is no longer interested in discussing hockey in this thread, so it is now closed.
