Montreal writer gives up on Habs, ready for baseball?

His mind is obviously on baseball. Not a bad article on Vinny's development, but the following passage has to be an embarrassment to the entire Montreal community.

"Rugged Colorado Rockies forward Peter Worrell played at the Pointe Claire high school. Worrell learned the team-comes-first Matthew and Marshall system that would be taught to Lecavalier."

Here's the link:
http://www.canada.com/sports/hockey/canadiensstory.html?id=b06b10a0-304d-48c0-83f6-b44d6403caf2

When did the Avs abandon their nickname and take it back from their baseball team? If that had been printed down here, Canadien fans would be all over it (as would Leaf, Oiler, and all other Canadian team fans).

I guess we have to root for the Bolts to beat up on the Expos tonight and Thursday.

(Special thank to rwilson99 on the SSN board for finding this.)

Somehow, the Montreal Gazette city beat reporter, making a mistake that slid by the proofreader doesn't embarass me too much.

We in a "non-traditional" market would have been crucified by our northern brethren had we made the same boo-boo, tho. :)

Absolutely.

Or, perhaps someone should tell him the Rockies left Colorado over a decade ago and are now the Devils.

Of course, they were the KC Scouts before they were the Colorado Rockies. I've looked everywhere here for tickets, but I guess they're all sold out.

If non-traditional markets are ripped on for their lack of knowledge, the traditional markets should be ripped on for living in the past. Mind-sets like the Lightning can't be good because they haven't won a Cup before or are from Florida or Montreal is the clear favorite because of it's history and experience... are all absurd.

Deal with the poster, not the perception. If I read that in a Tampa paper, I would have automatically assumed that the writer was on loan from the Nascar beat. Or maybe, his last article was about the early bird special at Denny's. I would have been wrong and arrogant to do so however. c'mon guys, who's going to watch the game tonight anyways ? It's salsa night on American Idol.

I don't get where this Florida=Redneck stuff is coming from.

Wasn't there a race that used to be held in the streets of Montreal?

The biggest rasslin' fans I know are in Ontario.

Being educated and called a Nascar fan is comparable to hurling racial epithets.

Florida = deep south in geography only.

I don't know man, have you ever been to Plant City?? Rural FL makes Tampa and Orlando look like Boston and NY. Not to mention north FL. Its indistinguishable from south Georgia or Alabama.

Fair enough. I've been to Lake City and Arcadia... but I've also been to East Tennessee.

East Tennessee is much worse.

Well, considering I lived in the Panhandle in the early 80's, and we had a cross burnt on our street by the KKK, draw your own conclusions.

That said, the more urbanized areas like Miami or TB-Sarasota are nothing like northern rural Florida. Its like going from a cosmopolitan and multicultural city to the back woods "Deep South". Things have more than likely improved since the early 1980's as well....

On the flip side, the same could be said between Calgary & Edmonton and some parts of rural Alberta, or between Montreal and some of the more back woods areas of Quebec. :)

Florida = deep south in geography only. As I said, I would be wrong to do so. Jokes that use generalizations are meant to ridicule gemeralizations. Frankly I know nothing of Nascar, though the fact that it's popular kind of depresses me. I assume they have some educated fans, though how would I know.

My point exactly. I lived in Tallahassee for a year, and couldn't believe how much more country (redneckish, to more precise) it was than Tampa, and it still wasn't as bad as the surrounding towns.

As a TN native I'll vouch for the redneck-ness of east TN. However, there are :toothless rednecks/hicks everywhere in north america it just seems more fun to make fun of someone because they have a southern twang. And to you all's credit FL is filled with northerns who moved there for the nice weather.

at any rate...can't wait to see the game tonight.

P.S being american sports fans we could REALLY give montreal some hell about the expos and their splendid attendance. :D

Glad you bring that up. I posted on the Mtl. board that fans should be judged as to quality rather than quantity. I've been a devoted Expo fan since their inception but can do little about the fact that the city has abandoned Mr.Selig's game. I can argue baseball with the best of them, there just aren't that many of us left.

East Tennessee is much worse.

Thats where I live (in fact I'm so East I'm in the Central Time Zone).

The area I lived in is pretty messed up, it has the "Southern Alabama" area (Niceville), then the Military base (Eglin AFB), then there is what I call the "Big City" area thats got all the crime and fun stuff (Fort Walton Beach), then last but not least the Rich People/Tourist Place with the beaches and the huge hotels on the Gulf (Destin).

If I took pictures of each place there is no way you guys would be able to tell they were within 15 minute drive of eachother.

The smaller cities and towns outside of the area (30 minutes or more) are all more like the "Southern Alabama" and so is most of the panhandle (with the exceptions of parts of Panama City and Pensacola).

I lived in Tally for a year and a half, and used to drive home to the parent's place in Spring Hill every month or so for a visit. Once you get north of Crystal River on US 19, it gets a little weird. I'm hoping they don't still go in for cross burnings and whatnot, but I'd wager that you won't find pig feed at gas stations in the greater Tampa area, but it's plentiful up in the appropriately named Dixie County. ;)

Gotta love Florida, it's so VARIED. :D

I once drove from New Orleans down to my parents place in Seminole just to do a bit of touring, and Daphne Alabama will be a hard place to beat for rednecks. I stood out a mile as I didn't have a beard.....and that included the women!

Anyway its game time so its back to the Sports Animal.

No kidding 67. We drove down the panhandle coming to Tampa from NO in February. Driving through military and redneck towns and all of a sudden you hit Destin. Reminds me of the East Coast; I'd say it would be a good idea to buy ANY parcel of land up that way that you can afford and sit on it for a few years.

Didn't you folks know - Ocala is the South Pole. Once you get beyond Ocala you start going north. Every city from there to Miami (Gainsville, Tampa, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Naples, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami) progressively becomes more northern.

I think it would bave been bettter to grab 3 years ago, its already getting really expensive to live there (well compared to living in other areas down here). Celebs are starting to migrate down here. Britney Spears has a house/condo something down here and shops at the mall no more then 5 minutes from my house quite a bit (I live like 2 minutes from the bridge that connects Niceville to Destin, if your wonder about my location on the left). I was kinda shocked at first but then my friend that works at the movie theater was telling my about all the celeberties (mostly rock band guys) that go there. I wasnt really paying attention after the first few names but he went on for quite awhile.

I think the celebs like it down here because its relatively Press free (the only reason I know britney is down here is because a lot of my friends work at the mall and have seen her several times, they say she is not very nice, no autographs or anything), hell the closest tv stations are a good hour or 2 drive away and its so beautiful. Type in "Destin, Florida" into google image search if you dont believe me.

I'm confused...you live so far east you're in the central time zone? That doesn't make sense. And do you even mean east TENNESSEE??

If you guys want the epitome of redneck go to either rural Pennsylvania or anywhere in Mississippi.

From Jack Todd's column in the Montreal Gazette. All I can say is WOW and he is right for a change.

"And Julien has to say that, even though he has to know his team is done like dinner. Trouble is, the Lightning are too good. Good enough to win when they are outplayed, as they were last night. Good enough to go all the way if they keep getting the bounces. Too good to beat if you aren't pretty much perfect."

frankly, having that fraud declare the lightning to be the favorite has me pretty concerned. He is the last person I would want on the lightning bandwagon.
