I get CBC's "The National" via satellite. A few nights ago they did a wonderful story on the long-standing rivalry between the Oxford and Cambridge Hockey teams. Although, the teams are predominantly made up of Canadians, it was nice to see that Great Britain also has "Collegiate Hockey". I guess you can say that Oxford and Cambridge are sort of like Britain's answer to the long standing rivalry here in the US between Harvard and Yale.

Here's the link to STORY (http://www.cbc.ca/cgi-bin/newsworld/viewer.cgi?FILE=SJ20040329.html&TEMPLATE=sj20022003.ssi&SC=SJ) (sort of).

It's usually featured on Ch5's NHL coverage. At least it was last year. I think there was a reason why they didn't show highlights this year.

The days were changed this year to Sunday, and Channel 5 couldn't get a crew down there for one reson or another...

Here is a Realplayer file with some of the game featured... starts at about 22 minutes.

Imperial College, Birmingham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Warwick, Sheffield plus those already mentioned.

To be fair its not just the hockey teams that fail to compare to university athletics stateside. Each and every sport at British universities is dwarfed by the funding and facilities found in the US.
To prove my point, a friend from school grew up playing at some of the best football (soccer) academies in this country. After A-levels he won a scholarship to Georgia tech i think. HE said that the faciliteis, attention to detail and coaching over there blew away anything he had experienced over here! We are not comparing uni to uni here. We are talking football, the nations pride and joy, and the US university facilities are better and more advanced than the premiership facilities!! :dunno:

man soccer facilities are better at US colleges, that must suck b@lls !!! its a joke that the UK doesnt take sports more seriously, do UKers see sports as a viable career or do they treat it as a past time thing :dunno:

little known fact scotland has won olympic gold in ice hockey

isnt the Uk govt doing a study on improving the health of the UK, get them to start with decent facilities, and hockey lessons for all

When Jimmy Foster is reborn would be my guess. I would say when GB gets it's hockey program sorted out, but really the rebirth is more likely.
