I am a NY Ranger fan and am interested in my team drafting Robbie Schremp. Is he a big talent. How close is he to NHL ready?

A definite future NHLer but probably 2-3 years away.

He's got the most phenomenal puck control I've ever seen. When he has it, it's as if it's on a string, and no one can take it away from him. He's also got an accurate shot and is a great passer. That said, he needs to get stronger and will definitely benefit from another year in junior.

Easy....I guess you never watched Sergei Samsonov play junior eh? Schremp is a shoe-in for future NHLer, but I think you're blowing him out of proportion. The only extraordinary move I've seen him make was at the OHL all-star game. A great OHLer though.

I'm sorry, but I have to offer a slightly different take on Mr. Schremp. Yes, the kid can certainly dangle... in the OHL. Good luck holding onto that puck for even a fraction of that time in the NHL, or even the AHL for that matter. And finish? He rarely has any.
I can draw a parallel between him and Jason Spezza in one glaringly obvious regard as well: he is a defensive liability! I know that Hunter Hockey has been preaching it to him all season, but his being benched (basically) in parts of Games 3/4 of this Western Conference final series is reflective of the lack of improvement in that area. And let's not forget that he has been labeled a 'cancer' in the dressing room.
That having been said, I realize he's only 17 years old and the defensive skills, especially, grow better with age. Nonetheless, Schrempy has some areas that need attention or he will be added to the growing list of OHLers who shoulda, coulda, woulda.
That's my take.

i agree. i've only seen schremp play twice, once in the top prospects game and game 4 of the guelph series on sunday and the difference was unbelievable. in the top prospects game he looked great. he had 3 points if i remember correctly and he was creating space every time he had the puck. however, in a game that mattered, in which there was some defense being played, he was nearly invisible. partially because he wasn't seeing regualar shift and partially because he was ineffective when he did play. i was just thinking to myself how can this guy be considered a possible top 3 if his ohl team won't give him a regular shift in the playoffs? all this being said he is only 17 and still has lots of room to grow.

Agreed,I'd say he's still a couple years away and if the team who picks him this year rushes him into the NHL, he'll be destined for a mediocre career.

All dynamic offensive players have the ability to attack the net or really challenge defenseman. Schremp has all the tools to do that, but he rarely ever attacks a defenseman who is in good position.... instead he's always doing button hook turns to regroup or stopping to wait for help, he gives the defense way too much respect and just takes what they give him, so he doesn't utilize his great stickhandleing ability to it's fullest. The reason why everyone knows he's such a great stickhandler is because of what he does during warmups and on the PP.... both situations where he is given time and space to operate. Reminiscing back to the Rick Nash days, if he saw two defenseman back and had no help with him, you could tell Nash still liked his chances and would put pressure on the defenseman to make a play in order to stop him. I'm sure there were single games where Nash beat more Players one-on-one at even strength, than Schremp has beaten all year under those same circumstances. Anybody following the Knights knows Corey Perry who is a slower skater and not as great a stickhandler has emberrased alot more defenseman this year than Schremp, because he is a much more aggressive offensive player.

As for the whole attitude thing, I don't buy any of it. Everyone has wanted out of Missy including fan favorite O'Sullivan. Yes the team turned things around, but what happened as soon as things got turned around.... they turf their coach, because they were too cheap to bring him back and Schremp liked playing for Ludzig. the team also gave Schremp flack for wanting to be home schooled under American curriculim, seems like a reasonable request to me... after all he'll likely live the majority of his life in the U.S. And just about every London/OHL fan, even casual ones will tell you Schremp doesn't get nearly enough ice time and often times has linemates that are tough to work with.... yet no complaints from Schremp himself, he's been nothing but a team player all year.

Not only does Schremp need more time to become forcefull offensively, he also needs to continue developing his defensive game and playing under Dale Hunter for another year or two should help that along.

As far as attitude goes, we'll have to agree to disagree. All I know is that three different scouts said that as long as they were with their respective organizations, Schremp would never wear their jersey... for his attitude alone. But you never know where they got their 'inside info' from.
Bottom line: Schremp got the Knights much-needed first goal lastnight, and that's what he's there for.

No one really knows why Schremp requested a trade, but the rumour I heard around London is that the IceDogs require all school-age kids to attend school and Robbie's parents wanted him to be schooled in an American curriculum with a tutor. The IceDogs wouldn't allow him to do that so he requested a trade. I have no idea if that's true or not, but there have not been any "dressing-room cancer" stories out of the JLC all year long and he seems to get along well with everyone.

Not to nit pick but no one saw Samsonov playing junior hockey because when he came from Russia he choose to play in the now non existant IHL for the Detroit Vipers than was drafted and has been with the Bruins since than.

As for Schremp, I agree he is simply an amazing stickhandler, he's probably a year or two away though.

I thought schremp's agent also advised him to ask for a trade, along with the school thing, anyways I don't think his attitude is a problem at all. Next year will be interesting for schremp. With Shepperd and Bois gone for sure, he will have to play a bigger role for the knights. He may turn out to be a powerplay specialist at the NHL level.

Bois' been out for the whole Guelph series and I think Schremp's ice time has actually decreased in comparison to the Erie and Windsor series. Plus guys like Drummond and Khomutov will also be competeing for some of Bois and Sheps ice time next year..... Hopefully Schremp's role is heightened though.

In game 7 vs. Guelph, Schremp didn't get a single shift in the first or second periods. He saw his first action at around the 13 minute mark of the third period, right after Guelph took the lead and London was looking for some offence. It's harsh for a star player to get that kind of treatment. In time I guess we'll see how he reacts in the papers and if he really sounds off about it.
If he bites his tongue, than people can shove those character issues... well, you know where. IMO Schremp wouldn't be out of place if he states his disappointed with how he was used in this series.

He was stapled bc he cannot play D in his own zone. Ironically Richmond can't either. How many defensive mistakes would Quincy have made?

To put the "character issues" to death, here are Robbies comments about Hunter's stupidity last night (not playing him):

"It happens, I guess," he said. "To benefit the team, you've just got to take the blows and roll with it.

"Whatever makes the team win. If that's what Dale thinks will make us win . . . that's his job. I'll listen to him."

The end (taken from the London Free Press).

Yeah I read that too, Schremp handled this huge slap in the face very well!
Not only did he bite his tongue about the way he was used, but sometimes actions speak louder than words and Robbie sure wasn't dragging his feet in defiance when Hunter finally did turn to him in the third period.... instead Schremp went out there and turned in one of his best shifts all year, he was everywhere and could have drawn penalties on atleast two occasions had the ref not put his whistle away.

His agant was a little more vocally upset with the turn of events.... he questioned why London would aquire a top player in the league and not use him in big games and when asked if he would demand a trade for Schremp, he wouldn't comment.

I think everyone is asking the same question his agent is, but I'm hoping Schremp ends up returning!

I know. The knights have a real good chance of being the best in the OHL next season again, but if Robbie is gone that drastically hurts there chances. If used properly there is no doubt in my mind that he will be more valuable to this team next season than Perry (not much of a stretch there ;) )

Hunter didn't even give him a chance. Schremp is suppose to be a special player, maybe he plays the game of his life in game 7 when it all matters, but he wasn't even given the opportunity. Even on defence I would rather have rob than logan hunter who was used on a regular shift.

If whichever NHL team draft him...and know that he won't get the ice and is treated this way, would it be better for his development if they brought him up and have him play minor minutes and practice with the team ala Dustin Brown?
I know I would definitly consider it instead of throwing him back to London next year if I were the GM of that team..
