It's Ukraine not "The" UkraineTyrolean 04-18-2004, 12:27 AM As the country is now independent and not under Soviet control. 1991 04-18-2004, 08:23 AM As the country is now independent and not under Soviet control. True, stupid people make stupid mistakes I guess... Markov 04-18-2004, 02:36 PM Really guys aren't you just splitting hairs here. Hans Moleman 04-18-2004, 07:52 PM People from Yukon Territories in Canada say the same thing, "It's not 'THE' Yukon, we don't say 'THE' Ontario." I think it's the phonetic sound "yew". People say The USA, The Yukon, The UK, and they said the USSR. It's nothing intentional I can assure you. Stephen 04-18-2004, 10:36 PM As the country is now independent and not under Soviet control. This is so trivial, relax. slats432 04-18-2004, 11:12 PM As someone who is Ukrainian, I have been saying that my ancestors are from "The" Ukraine since birth. Hopefully they aren't pissed. :joker: a89mogilny89 04-18-2004, 11:13 PM As someone who is Ukrainian, I have been saying that my ancestors are from "The" Ukraine since birth. Hopefully they aren't pissed. :joker: That's funny. I've been saying that my ancestors are from "The Homeland" instead of "The Ukraine". Don't know why though. Maybe that angers my ancestors more than other things. Graham 04-19-2004, 01:12 AM People from Yukon Territories in Canada say the same thing, "It's not 'THE' Yukon, we don't say 'THE' Ontario." I think it's the phonetic sound "yew". People say The USA, The Yukon, The UK, and they said the USSR. It's nothing intentional I can assure you. I agree. After watching the EIHC in Kyiv in December 2002 with Great Britain, I can understand why Ukrainians want to make the distinction after years of Soviet oppression. The problem is that The Ukraine scans better. Likewise, Netherlands. I believe technically they are Netherlands, but I can't stop myself saying the Netherlands as it makes the sentence sound more natural. Still, I guess as long as you don't call it Holland, the Dutch are happy... :D slats432 04-19-2004, 08:11 AM That's funny. I've been saying that my ancestors are from "The Homeland" instead of "The Ukraine". Don't know why though. Maybe that angers my ancestors more than other things. Even funnier is that my father came over from the Ukraine in 1915. With his accent he would say that he came over "from Old Country." instead of "from the Old Country." Jacob 04-19-2004, 11:37 PM "You know what the Ukraine is? It's a sitting duck. A road apple. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's time to put the hurt on the Ukraine." -Kramer 1991 04-22-2004, 01:13 PM "You know what the Ukraine is? It's a sitting duck. A road apple. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble.
